  2. 'I effectively got into Wembley without a ticket'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

I've spoken to a few fans now who have been describing the chaotic scenes outside Wembley before England's defeat by Italy.

One called Sam says it was a "complete failure to police and steward a big event. There was no security perimeter, no ticket checks, no policing and barely any stewards about."

He added: "I effectively got in the stadium without ticket. I had one, but my ticket didn't get activated on my phone because the stewards just gave up doing the Covid check. Queues were massive.

"As my ticket wasn't activated, I just squeezed in through the turnstiles with my mate. I’ve been saying for years you can get in Wembley without a ticket if your mate has one.

"At no other tournament in the world can you get near the ground without a ticket."

The best team in the tournament won. Our guys were great though and they will have more craft and be better prepared to win in Qatar next year. I'm proud of them all and I'm pleased that we have such a well behaved and ethically diverse team.

Great to see legendary commentator Barry Davies enjoying the final with his grandchildren last night.

His son Mark tweeted this photo of the Davies family ready to react to the game in front of the telly.

What would Barry's final words have been after England's Euros journey?

  6. 'I was offered money for my accreditation lanyard'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Security was ineffective and it is rare at a major final for supporters to be able to get so close to the stadium without tickets. I was offered money for my accreditation lanyard just yards from the media entrance - unthinkable at any such showpiece event I have previously attended.

Inevitably, the situation boiled over into the frightening sight of barriers being stormed by scores of ticketless fans desperate to get inside Wembley, with children left terrified, others knocked to the ground, aisles full and the area reserved for disabled spectators swamped with supporters looking for anywhere to sit.

Fans who had legitimately paid to watch England's first major final for 55 years were left struggling to watch the game.

Stewards, perhaps understandably, were overwhelmed by the numbers they were having to deal with. It certainly did not appear to be a "small group" as originally stated.

  7. 'Worst thing I have ever seen'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

A video has emerged showing fans breaking through Wembley Stadium's security barriers at the Euro 2020 final.

Police said a number of ticketless fans did make it inside the stadium.

Italy supporter Roberta Cuppari said she and her friend had to watch the match crushed in a corner while being sworn at and abused after ticketless fans took their seats and refused to move.

"It was the worst thing I have ever seen," said the 38-year-old mother-of-three. "There were people urinating, people doing drugs."

  8. Improving England offer real hopepublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

England's loss will be felt deeply after such impressive progress through the knockout stage with wins against Germany, Ukraine and Denmark.

Gareth Southgate must now digest whether he got it right in the final when it came to his approach, substitutions and penalty takers but when the dust settles England can reflect on progress made.

England took one step further than they did in Russia at the 2018 World Cup and Southgate now has a potent blend of youth and experience to work with as he plots a course to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Bukayo Saka came of age in this tournament while England have exciting young in the shape of Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Jude Bellingham, augmented by Jack Grealish.

Raheem Sterling had had a stellar campaign, Harry Kane showed flashes of his world-class ability and the central defensive pair of John Stones and Harry Maguire were solid. Jordan Pickford also made an outstanding contribution in goal.

  11. Boom in shirt salespublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

England's Euro 2020 journey might have ended in heartbreak but their run to the final sparked a boom in sales of replica football shirts, according to a leading British sporting goods retailer.

Sales of England and other national kits at retailer Sports Direct quadrupled compared to during the 2018 World Cup, the last major tournament to feature England, the company said.

"We've seen an uplift in anything related to the England team," a spokeswoman for Sports Direct parent group Frasers said.

  12. 'Donnarumma made the difference'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

Ryan Howard: Michael Owen was younger than Saka when he scored his penalty against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. Don't blame Southgate; rather, congratulate Donnarumma on an excellent shootout performance. Both keepers were excellent, but he made the difference.

Italy 1-1 England (aet: Italy win 3-2 on pens)

The pain of another penalty shootout defeat was overwhelming as England lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final - but in the midst of disappointment, there was a feeling of hope and an inkling that this was just the start of a new chapter.

"They have given us hope and something to smile about," former England captain Alan Shearer told BBC One.

Ex-England midfielder and recent Chelsea manager Frank Lampard added: "They lifted the country up when we needed it."

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said the government will be "talking to the FA to identify a suitable way to thank the team and staff.”
