Another new managerial face in the Scottish Premiership is Malky Mackay.

A cloud of controversy overshadowed his County appointment and, like the aforementioned Heart boss Robbie Neilson, a decent start will be required for the former Watford and Cardiff City boss to keep any disgruntled fans off his back early doors.

John Hughes guided the Highlanders to survival on the final day of the season last term - will Mackay be hoping for similar or demanding more?

How can you possibly better a double-cup winning season? Win the treble, of course!

In all seriousness, it is difficult to see how Callum Davidson can improve on last campaign in terms of silverware, but few would bet against them bettering their league position.

A fantastic run of form helped the Perth side snatch a top-six spot in the dying moments of the last round of pre-split games before finishing fifth.

If they can maintain their 2021 form and not lose too many valuable assets, Davidson might have an eye on climbing into the top four.

Bri Mc: "Anything less would be failure, but their run to being Europa League runners-up may hamper them?"

Gary Davidson: "May as well win that too..."

    Scottish Premiership

Despite achieving their best top-flight finish in 32 years, 2020-21 was a season of near misses for St Mirren.

Dropping out at the semi-final stage of both cup competitions was hard to take, as was narrowly missing out on the top six at the last minute to St Johnstone.

This campaign, Jim Goodwin will be hoping his players can learn from falling at the big moments to drive the side on to further success.

  6. On to the Championship...published at 14:44 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

Let's move on to Scotland's second tier.

Relegation for Hamilton Academical means they join the Championship with Kilmarnock, who were beaten in the relegation play-off by Dundee.

League 1 champions Partick Thistle are the third addition after bouncing back at the first attempt.

  7. ARBROATHpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish Championship

Under the guidance of Dick Campbell, Arbroath are another side who consistently punch above their weight.

At times last season it looked like the tide was turning on the part-time club, but they rallied to secure a seventh-placed finish and second-tier football for the third successive season.

With the resources at his disposal, survival again will be the remit for Campbell. Just don’t tell him that, though - the big man has aspirations of winning the league.

Regardless of what happens, at least Arbroath fans can always say they have the best boss in the country.

A disappointing campaign last term for Ayr led to Mark Kerr departing in February before being replaced by David Hopkin in the dugout.

Hopkin's men scraped to survival, finishing outside the relegation play-off zone on goal difference.

Hopkin has shown he can perform Premiership promotion heroics before at Livingston, so can Ayr fans dare to dream this term?

With both Hearts and Dundee in last season's division, occupying either of the top two spots was always going to be a tough ask for sides like Dunfermline.

Securing a play-off place can viewed as progression, but with the departure of boss Stevie Crawford the club are moving into a new era under Peter Grant.

Grant has ambitions to take the club back into the top flight and the signings of Graham Dorrans and Rangers loanee Kai Kennedy highlight that.

But with captain Euan Murray and striker Declan McManus among the departure list, there are big shoes to fill.

    Scottish Championship

Morton endured a rough 2020-21, securing their second-tier status via the relegation play-off.

Gus MacPherson was thrown into a tough gig in March, but survival was achieved and now the former St Mirren boss has had a full pre-season to work with his players.

A raft of players have departed the club but the signing for ex-Livingston defender Alan Lithgow and Dundee keeper Jack Hamilton may give MacPherson's side the stability it was lacking last term.

Last season Hamilton were relegated to the second tier for the first time in seven years after many a campaign defying the odds.

Can Brian Rice’s men bounce back? With Kilmarnock in the same division, they will have to punch above their weight again.

But with the likes of young Jamie Hamilton, Kyle Munro and Lewis Smith at his disposal, Rice will back his side to make a promotion push.

While Billy Dodds is a familiar face in Highland dugouts, this season will be his first as a manager.

The former Scotland striker has enjoyed successful spells at both Ross County and Inverness as assistant boss, but how will he get on in his first number one role at Caley Thistle?

After narrowly missing out on the play-off spots last campaign, a top-four spot will surely be the target for Dodds this term.

With the acquisitions of ex-County pair Michael Gardyne and Billy Mckay, a play-off push shouldn't be beyond them.

There is only one goal for Kilmarnock this season and that is promotion.

Anything other than bouncing back to the top flight at the first attempt will be failure, and Tommy Wright knows it.

Recruiting the likes of Scott Robinson, Liam Polworth and Jason Naismith from the Premiership shows their intent.

However, it won’t be easy as we've seen with struggles faced by both Dundee sides and Hibernian in recent years.

  15. PARTICK THISTLEpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish Championship

Thistle haven't had it easy in recent years, but smiles were back on the faces of Jags fans come the end of last term when Ian McCall's side put together a fantastic run of form to clinch the League 1 title.

Now the Firhill side are back in the Championship and will have dreams of back-to-back promotions.

The permanent signing of Scott Tiffoney - who was vital last campaign while on loan from Livingston - could be key if Thistle are to have any aspirations of shaking things up.

There was an end-of-era feel about the conclusion to Queen of the South's 2020-21 campaign, with legendary striker Stephen Dobbie deciding to call time on his second spell at the club.

Not only do they have Dobbie to replace, but also strike partner Connor Shields who left for top-flight Motherwell.

Allan Johnston has a job on his hands to reinvent his frontline for the new season.

What a remarkable season it was for Raith last term.

John McGlynn's men were the entertainers of the Championship, achieving a third-place finish in their first campaign back in the second tier.

McGlynn's side would ultimately fall short against Dundee in the play-off semi-final, but the former Hearts boss will hope to build on that success with some shrewd additions, including Christophe Berra and James Keatings.

On we go to Scotland's League 1.

The third tier should be fascinating this term with League 2 champions Queen's Park and Alloa Athletic, who were relegated from the Championship, enhancing an already hugely-competitive division.

Easily the hardest league to call out of Scotland's top four divisions.

Ian Murray's side suffered heartbreak in last season's play-offs, falling at the final hurdle against Morton in their quest to gain promotion to the second tier.

The Lanarkshire side will be hoping to go one better in a competitive League 1.

An impressive League Cup victory over rivals Motherwell could provide the springboard to a memorable season, with the signings of Salim Kouider-Aissa, Rhys McCabe and Rico Quitongo catching the eye.

Relegation was hard to take for Alloa last season, but the odds were always stacked against them as one of the only part-time clubs in the second tier.

It's time for the club to restart and with Peter Grant departing for Dunfermline and a former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson taking his place in the dugout, there is a fresh feel at Indodrill.
