Clyde narrowly escaped the relegation play-off spot by just three points last season, now boss Danny Lennon will be hoping to challenge at the other end of the table.

There has been a large turnover of playing staff at Broadwood, but the signing of former Hearts and Dundee United midfielder Morgaro Gomis should add steel and experience to Lennon's midfield.

And in captain David Goodwillie, the Bully Wee have someone who guarantees goals.

Cove are one of several ambitious clubs in Scotland's lower leagues.

After back-to-back promotions, Paul Hartley's men finished third last season in their first campaign in League 1 before falling short in the play-off semi-final against Airdrieonians.

Hartley will be vying to improve this term and with the signings of former Ross County duo Iain Vigurs and Ross Draper, Cove have made their intentions clear.

  4. DUMBARTONpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 1

Dumbarton narrowly avoided the drop last term thanks to a relegation play-off win against Edinburgh City.

With rumours of financial troubles at the club and experienced manager Jim Duffy leaving for a coaching role at Ayr, this season could be an even more challenging one.

Perhaps a fresh start is what's required at The Rock, but ex-Stranraer boss Stevie Farrell has a huge job on his hands with a 30-player turnover to contend with.

  5. EAST FIFEpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 1

Despite ending the season in the League 1 bottom half, Darren Young's side finished just three points shy of a play-off spot last term.

The departure of on-loan Livingston man Jack Hamilton - who notched seven goals in nine games in the first half of the campaign - back to his parent hampered Young's attack.

Young will be hoping the signing of young forward Michael Cunningham from Dundee can have a similar impact as they eye a top-four spot.

  6. FALKIRKpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 1

Falkirk's 2020-21 campaign came to a calamitous conclusion. A grim run of form took the full-time side from top of League 1 in March to fifth come the end of the season.

The mere five points they picked up from their last nine league outings resulted in the club's lowest finish since 1978.

It's now up to former Aberdeen coach Paul Sheerin to guide his new side out of the third tier.

A load of players have departed, but a host of acquisitions - including experienced Championship trio Brad McKay, Aidan Nesbitt and Steven Hetherington - have strengthened Sheerin's squad.

  7. MONTROSEpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 1

It could be argued Montrose overachieved last season by making into the League 1 play-off spots.

Stewart Petrie's side fell short against Championship outfit Morton in the semi-final, but there are plenty of reasons to be positive going into the new campaign.

With a relatively small turnover of players in the squad so far this summer, Petrie's side might just fly under the radar again this term.

An inconsistent 2020-21 season ended in seventh place for Peterhead.

Jim McInally's side finished just four points above the relegation play-off place and in what appears to be an even more competitive third tier this time around, he will have a job on his hands to secure their League 1 status this term.

However, in McInally Peterhead have the longest-serving manager in the SPFL so the former Morton boss is well versed in what's required at this level.

  9. QUEEN'S PARKpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

The ambition that Queen's Park have shown since turning into a professional club has everyone wondering how far they can go in the SPFL.

The Glasgow side assembled a strong squad last season and won League 2 comfortably under Ray McKinnon.

McKinnon left in May in a mutual agreement and was replaced by his highly-rated assistant boss Laurie Ellis.

The squad still largely remains intact following last season's campaign and additions of players such as Liam Brown from Edinburgh City and Lewis Moore from Hearts will only increase the club's chances of back-to-back promotions.

  11. And finally, League 2...published at 13:55 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

The fourth and final division. Like the third tier, League 2 should also be difficult to call this season.

The ambitious Kelty Hearts will have aspirations of making it back-to-back promotions.

However, the likes of Edinburgh City and last season's League 1 bottom club Forfar Athletic might have something to say about that...

  12. ALBION ROVERSpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Brian Reid's team were fighting relegation for much of last season and managed to avoid the drop comfortably in the end.

Some of that may have been down to eventually relegated club Brechin City only amassing two wins from 22 league games, so Rovers will know a strong performance is needed to survive again.

Pushing for the top half is likely to be difficult, but mid-table security might be viewed upon as a good season.

  13. ANNAN ATHLETICpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Annan fought at the bottom of League 2 last season, coming in at eighth. It was a disappointing campaign and they'll be keen to look up the way this season.

Signings have been brought in from across the border, with Carlisle United duo Charlie Barnes and Charlie Birch arriving at Galabank.

A run of four games against teams outside the promotion play-off spots last season in their opening five matches could provide a chance to hit the ground running.

  14. COWDENBEATHpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Gary Bollan's team were spared a relegation play-off last year by Brechin City's poor form in League 2. Much better is needed to avoid a precarious position come May.

They've added ex-Rangers player Kyle Hutton to their midfield on a permanent basis, which should provide experience.

Their League Cup matches, while not qualifying for the last 16, have allowed Cowdenbeath to show up well against teams in leagues above. Similar form in the league could be enough to keep them up.

  15. EDINBURGH CITYpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Runners-up last year, Edinburgh City will have their eyes on the title this term. But added competition in the league means that will be a difficult task.

The club will move to their new-look home ground Meadowbank in a nice boost for the club and its supporters. On the park, they have an experienced manager in Gary Naysmith while former boss James McDonaugh operates upstairs as sporting director.

Perhaps Edinburgh City won't be title favourites, but they'll certainly be up there.

  16. ELGIN CITYpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Perhaps it's best Elgin put their League Cup campaign to one side ahead of the League 2 season.

A 6-1 defeat by Dundee United - when it could have been more - was a learning curve, while they were easily beaten by Kelty Hearts at home. Improvement was shown against Arbroath, though.

Elgin finished third last year but they have a fight on their hands to maintain that position.

  17. FORFAR ATHLETICpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

Relegation from League 1 was tough to take but there's new-found optimism at Forfar under new manager Gary Irvine.

The former Dundee player had Tony Docherty to guide him through his spell as interim manager last season. Given his experience as assistant to Derek McInnes at Aberdeen, you can imagine it was invaluable.

They'll not settle for anything less than a promotion play-off spot at least this season.

  18. KELTY HEARTSpublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

This could be the team to watch in League 2 this season. Kevin Thomson has replaced former Rangers team-mate Barry Ferguson as manager at New Central Park and he's not messed around with new recruits.

Joe Cardle has arrived from Partick Thistle while Jamie Barjonas has joined from Rangers. With the likes of Nathan Austin and Kallum Higginbotham already at the club, a title tilt is likely.

That's not bad for a side who won the Lowland League last season. Ex-Dunfermline forward Andrew Barrowman has also been appointed sporting director as changes occur off the park too.

Stephen Swift is in the Stenhousemuir hotseat this season after Davie Irons' departure as manager and he's made a host of impressive signings for League 2.

Former Airdrie defender Sean Crighton has been named club captain while Nat Wedderburn, Ross Forbes and Craig Reid are all seasoned SPFL players.

The surprise package? Perhaps bettering their sixth place finish from last season is achievable.

  20. STIRLING ALBIONpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Scottish League 2

League 2 is shaping up really nicely this term and Stirling Albion are another team making interesting moves.

But the loss of striker Andy Ryan is a blow. He has moved back to former club Hamilton after topping the goalscoring charts at Stirling.

Finding a replacement for him will be key to them pushing the top four.
