Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are looking ominous at the top end of the table.

Manchester United, though, are already dropping off the pace.

We are back on Sunday for two more games, including Steve Bruce's 1,000th as a manager.

"I hope you (journalists) are feeling the heat from your bosses, because it (getting replaced) has not happened. Let's hope you get a bit of stick as well."

    Until then.

  2. 'Play this game 10 times, we win nine'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is difficult to believe we dominated Chelsea, particularly in the last 30 minutes, and they are very lucky. That is crazy. Four months ago, they won the Champions League and we got promoted through the play-offs. They dominated without creating anything in the first hour, and after we made changes we created chances. We kept them to five shots, five shots, I'm talking about Chelsea. That is impressive. I can't ask for more; if we play this game 10 times, we win nine."

On Edouard Mendy: "He is a top goalkeeper, too good for us, and I said that to him. Well done to him. It is what it is, I'm very pleased."

On Brentford's start to the season: "We are here to be assets to the Premier League and play exciting stuff and go toe to toe with the big teams. That is the third time we've shown it; of the three, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, this is the game we deserved to win most, but that is just how football is."

  3. 'It gives us confidence' - Norgaardpublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

    Brentford

Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard: "In the first half they were the better team and for the situation for the goal we switched off and they have the class.

"In the second half we were the better team and had the better chances. We kept them in their half and we were more composed as well.

"Our set pieces were very dangerous and as a promoted team that’s one of the areas we have to do well against one of the best teams in Europe.

"It is very small margins that we didn't get the equaliser. I found myself in the box and few times and the overhead kick would have been the icing on the cake but it was a great save by the keeper.

"It [the performance] gives us the confidence that we can go toe to toe against these teams."

  4. 'We were lucky in the end'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were very strong for 70 minutes and very lucky for 20 minutes, to sum it up. We escaped with the three points thanks to Edouard (Mendy). It was like a cup game at the end; they took risks and the atmosphere gave them a lot of courage."

On what he expected from Brentford: "They play like this from the start, it was a lot of effort to not allow them to create this energy, and we put lots of effort into collecting second balls in midfield; we put a lot of effort into invisible work. We were strong in the challenges and played with composure. It is important not to lose the ball just as you win it because this is what they like. It was like this in the end."

On Edouard Mendy: "He was concentrated in the first half; they trouble you with long throws and set pieces. They created big chances and he was the key to the clean sheet."

    • The Blues have conceded just three goals from their first eight Premier League games this season (5 clean sheets), the fewest they have conceded at this stage of a season since 2010-11 (2).
    • Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy kept his 20th Premier League clean sheet in this game (38th start) – only Petr Cech (26), Pepe Reina (32), Alisson (36) and Roy Carroll (37) have needed fewer starts to reach 20 shut outs in the competition’s history.
  6. 'We trust the guys who are young'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking to Sky Sports: "In the end the last 20 minutes were suddenly a cup game. They had nothing to lose and they found momentum. It felt like we had one player less.

"We were not clear enough in the challenges. They found the belief and we focused too much on defending.

"I was very content with the first 65-70 minutes where maybe we should have scored more.

"It helps if we have Toni [Rudiger] or Thiago [Silva] to help calm the game down and with that first touch to counter the pressure. We trust the guys who are young, if you don’t play you cannot get experience.

"It is better to be there [top of the table] but there are way too many teams who are close so it it not the main point in October."

  9. 'Mendy was superb' - Chilwellpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Ben Chilwell speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very tough. The last 20 minutes we showed the mentality we need to show all season. They have had a brilliant start to the season and their fans are good for them. In the last 20 minutes to half an hour they were really pushing them on and it was hell on earth.

"[Edouard] Mendy was superb. We see it every day in training and he is now gettng the credit he deserves in these games by making big saves to get us the points. We showed our steel and how strong we are defensively.

"We spoke about coming out and trying to get back in the swing of things. The preparation is not brilliant but it is about mentality and that was there.

"You have ups and downs the important thing is to train hard and when you get your chances take it."
