    FT: Southampton 1-0 Leeds

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Sport: "Sometimes the performances have been better than the results. To win you need a goal and today we scored one. It was not the best performance this season but it was a solid one. It was defensively a good job that we did today. It was a decisive goal and a deserved one I think.

"To be honest I was not sure what I wanted to do or team to pick. Players had been away and come back late. I tried to pick guys with the self-confidence, who scored during the international break, like Armando Broja. We worked on the plan for two days and finally we needed something different to against Chelsea. It was the right thing.

"You don't get a lot of chances against them. It was the situation where we are under pressure and defending deeper. They played it well in this moment. I don't know many games when you are relaxed in the Premier League and one mistake can kill a game. Our performances have been good but the win has not been there. The season is long and I am not scared that we don't take wins. To take one is the first step."

  4. 'The guys gave everything'published at 17:38 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Manchester City 2-0 Burnley

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC: "After the international break it’s always a little bit difficult to come to a rhythm and I know how good Burnley are. They did really well, they have good players and we played a good 15-20 minutes in the first-half, we created chances and the last 20 minutes we lost some tempo. We did well in the second half and played really well and could’ve scored more goals. Good result, after the international break we take the victory and look what’s next.

"We run and fight for every ball, Burnley play for long balls and they’re a master at this. You have to defend set pieces well and anything could’ve happened if Chris Wood had scored that goal near the end. We had chances but couldn’t score more unfortunately.

"The importance is improving our game I am satisfied that the second-half was better than first. The team showed me the way we want to play and the shape we want to play in. All the guys gave everything, it doesn’t matter if the performance is good or not, it’s important that you fight for your teammates and everyone was incredible."

On John Stones and Raheem Sterling: "Both played really well – it was a difficult game, tried to tell them to forget about previous 5-0 because Burnley always fight and never give up and are able to go to any stadium and create a problem and know what they have to do so I give a lot of credit to them today."

  5. 'We are not dancing on the table'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-0 Brighton

    Norwich City

Norwich manager Daniel Farke speaking to BBC Sport: "We are a bit disappointed that we didn't get all three point but we did lots of things; getting off the mark at home, backing up the draw at Burnley, creating more chances and keeping another clean sheet. It is the next step. You always want to take a big step, but you have to take what you can at this level. We are not dancing on the table, it is only a point. The final piece was missing. But it is a step in the right direction.

"We conceded too many goals in the first few games and with each performance, the belief is growing, and we will become more effective in the opponents box. The chances we created should have been good enough for one and two goals at least."

On Josh Sargent, who missed a good chance in the first half: "Josh is probably the most sad in the dressing room. He knows he should score at this level but he had many great occassions without the ball.

Brentford are up against the European champions but aren't ruffled, happy to pass the ball around at the back despite the best efforts of Timo Werner trying to close them down.

  7. 'It was a fair result'published at 17:35 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, speaking to Sky Sports: It was a fair result, we didn't play well in any moment in the game. The difference was produced in the first half and the second half the game was more even but the difference is that I was in their favour in the first half. It justified their win even if they scored in the second half.

"We tried to play the same as always. With two wingers and two attackers through the middle and two full-backs that get forward and Klich behind those players trying to organise the play. But it was very difficult for us to recover the all and provoke mistakes in the opponent. And it was difficult for us to stop them getting from their defence to attack.

"It is not common to miss six players but the team that started the game was formed of players that usually play. We were in condition to play a more even game and thought we could dominate and impose ourselves. That is clearly not what happened. To ignore the absentees would not be logical but with the players we counted on, we were in conditions to play a more even game and to take forward out style. We didn't manage it and strangely in the second half when some modifications happened, the game wasn't so unbalanced in their favour. It was more even. The difference was fair. It was produced via a goal that is justified by the differences in the teams in the first half.

    "We always expect a response."

  8. 'Pleased with the performance'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Manchester City 2-0 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports: “Overall I’m pleased because it’s a tough place to come, we know that we’ve experienced that. Our shape was good, two centre halves were excellent, keeper was sharp. We created chances and you have to defend well but also create chances. We get nothing from the game but I was actually pleased with the performance against a top side.

“They created chances, not as many as in the past but I was pleased we were creating quality chances and that’s the challenge we’ve had all season – taking our chances.

“They react quicker than us, these are top players and it’s not just about the passes they make and the goals they score, they see the picture quickly and react quickly. They’re key things that we have to add to our performance and keep learning.

“I don’t concern myself with other teams, we’ve had a tough start but these games tough asks. Our consistency and value in the team, with respect we’re not playing City every week and every game is a big game but we have to keep performance levels high. Most of their chances were created because we gave the ball away, give the ball away in midfield and they react so quickly and suddenly they’re in your box and scoring a goal.

“I’m a realist, you have to get points on the table and take a win how it comes but alongside that there has to be a future in what you’re trying to achieve. You have to find a way to win and you have to find that however it might come.”

    FT: Southampton 1-0 Leeds United

    Leeds United

Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper: "We conceded the game in the first half, we were not at it first half. We didn't win first balls or second balls. In the second half we played well, but conceded on counter attack.

"We stuck at it and that's the only positive we can take.

"Obviously we were missing a few players but that is how it goes. It is always difficult when you are denied key players, take two of the dominant players out of the side and any team in the league would feel it. But we can't use that as an excuse."

  11. 'These games I want to live'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves manager Bruno Lage: "I think it was these games I want to continue [having in] my career in England. It was until the 94th minute. It is the kind of environment I want and want to live. We don't deserve to lose. I don't think Villa deserve to lose. It was a good game, a good performance, I think we created a lot of problems for Villa. At 2-0 down we put the guys in front. It's more difficult to mark, we created spaces and in the same way, we had some luck. These three points are very good for us.

"We gave a fake nine so I don't want to give easy marks for strong guys. I went to put men on the back of midfielders. They continued to press at 2-0 and I tried to put men on them. That's what we did. In corners or free-kicks those situations can happen and we scored three goals.

"Every time I believe. It's easy for me to say now I made the right choice. It's easy to say 'I was right' when you win. But you have to take decisions. The other players who start or come on, help the team to win three points.

"We did three good performances in the first three games but did not get any points. The confidence came with hard work. The players are seeing what we are doing and with victories."

  13. 'It's a painful defeat'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "I find it difficult to explain because it should have been a victory. We were comfortable and we didn't see that coming. Three set-pieces have cost us three goals. You have to defend better when goals get put in the box in the last 10 minutes. There were frantic clearances so that was a disappointment today.

"In the first half I thought it was a bit of a chess game. I thought we were better but only had the one big chance and they had one through Adama Traore. In the second half we spoke about the areas we wanted to play and we did. At 2-0 you can always give them a sniff and we did.

"i never felt there was a momemtum shift. There were a few second balls that we didn't pick up. We defended the box quite well in open play but it was the set-pieces.

"The actual free-kick or goal I have no complaints. That happens. It's how they get to that... We had a throw-in which we gave away then Traore comes inside and we give a foul away.

"It's a painful defeat because it's one we should have had. The performance was better than Tottenham but you have to defend the box better. It hurts because it's a football match and I'm a football manager."

    FT: Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to BBC: "That's painful because we were so comfortable in the game - 2-0 up. 10 minutes to go and we concede three set-piece goals. We had enough to win that comfortably and we should have.

"You look at the first goal and they are both second phases. We have enough bodies to get a head on it and we don't. The second goal there was empty spaces and we got punished for it. We were the better team but you can't legislate for a lack of composure in the last 10 minutes.

"I thought we were the better team in the second half and caused the bigger problems.

"There was stunned silence and probably some debate before I went in the [changing rooms]. It's massive disappointment because it's three points we've thrown away. We will review it. If we play like we did for 80 minutes we will win games but it's not 80 minutes it's 90 minutes."

  16. 'What a win, what a team spirit!'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 16 October 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves matchwinner Ruben Neves to Sky Sports: "It doesn't matter [if it was his goal] to be honest! The ball was in so that's all that matters. What a win, what a team spirit. I'm so proud of the boys. A really hard game for us. Villa are a great team, they were at home, it was a derby - it was almost perfect for us. We want to play better but when you can't the team spirit comes and good things can happen.

"Our fans were amazing and didn't stop supportung us so really happy for the team and happy for the fans. Every single game is important. It was a great game to watch. I think we deserved the win. There were games before where we played better and didn't win. That's football."

On Adama Traore: "It is his game. He can do things that not anyone can do in football. He is a special player, we are used to it. He does a lot of this in training sessions. We know how hard it is to stop him. He did a great cross for our second goal then he won that foul that gave us our third one. A good game for him."

If you heard Armando Broja talk you wouldn't have thought he was an Albanian international. Born in Slough, with the accent to match, he plays for the country where his parents are from.

After scoring a winner against Hungary last weekend, the 20-year-old clinched Southampton's first Premier League win of the season today.

"It was amazing to get my first start in the Premier League, I've been dreaming of this moment since I was three years old," says the on-loan Chelsea striker.

"Scoring on my first start is a dream come true, I couldn't ask for anything better. The guys put in a great shift. it was an amazing moment.

"This is the favourite moment of my career so far, hopefully there are many moments and goals more to come.

"It was a great run from Nathan Redmond, he said before the game the goals will come, just to keep making runs. He put the ball on a plate for me and I was able to finish."

On Saints finally earning a league win, he adds: "It's so important, we've been searching for this first win and it is amazing to get it here at home in front of the fans.

"Hopefully we can push on and the wins will keep coming."

At the back, Man Utd are a shambles. I have to be honest. Watching them, they are a team full of world class players, but they aren't playing as a team. When they get results, it is down to individual brilliance.

Leicester were dominant, they controlled the game and looked dangerous on the counter attack. They had real purpose and pace; Vardy and Iheanacho looked a constant threat. Maguire looked very rusty. It can be difficult to come in and do a job after time out.
