  2. 'A must-win game for Man Utd'published at 12:46 British Summer Time 24 October 2021

It feels like it is a must-win game for Manchester United psychologically. They've had some highs but they are eight points off top at the moment.

Last season showed that it doesn't matter if you are eight points behind at this stage, but to be that far behind with the investment that they've had and the quality of the players that they've got, surely that can't be good enough?

If they lose today it could be a disaster.

Manchester United's performance to come back from 2-0 down against Atalanta and win 3-2 on Wednesday summed up what they are like under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They can have spells where they are awful, as well as when they are very hard to stop.

If United had been beaten then that would have been a bonus for Liverpool but, instead, both of them are on a high going into the weekend.

There is probably more pressure on United to get a positive result, because they have dropped points in each of their past three league games, but a draw would not be a bad result for either camp and that's what I'm going for.

Liverpool won't change the way they play - they can't. The reason I think United will shut up shop is because, if they are open, you would fear the worst for them.

    Prediction: 1-1

  4. Man Utd fans quietly optimistic...?published at 12:39 British Summer Time 24 October 2021

Speak to some Manchester United fans and they are quietly optimistic about their meeting with Liverpool.

Their team might have only won three of their past eight games but, the theory goes, Liverpool at Old Trafford is exactly the kind of game in which United's star names will excel.

Frequent discussion about never knowing which United team will turn up really revolves around inherent weaknesses in the manager's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

At the top of the pitch, the players don't work hard enough when they do not have the ball, it is claimed. That puts pressure on those behind.

No matter which personnel are deployed, the midfield two do not function effectively as a pivot between defence and attack, which exposes issues, either technical or physical, at the back, exposing David de Gea in goal.

  5. Key moment in United's title hopes?published at 12:36 British Summer Time 24 October 2021

If United lose today, you would think that their title hopes would already be over, despite only nine games played.

The Red Devils are sixth in the table going into today's action with four wins, two draws and two defeats from eight games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side only have one point from their last three games and, if they are to challenge for the title, they must find some form quickly.

In four of the past seven seasons, the title winners have only lost two or three league games all season.

Last season, Manchester City won the title with 86 points, the lowest title-winning haul since Leicester in 2016. To even reach that amount, United need to average 2.4 points a game for the rest of the season.

Liverpool, in third place, are unbeaten - but their gap over United would only be a point if the Red Devils win.
