PSG are yet to win the Champions League in a decade of Qatari ownership and subsequent heavy investment, with the 2020 final defeat against Bayern Munich the closest they have come.

Lionel Messi in tears as he receives ovation from FC Barcelona at press conference

On Sunday Messi broke down in tears at a news conference in which he admitted he did not want to leave Barcelona, but had no choice.

Messi had agreed a new deal - on 50% of his old wages - to stay at Barcelona but the club could not afford to implement it because they were so far above the wage limit allowed by La Liga.

"He used to earn 140m euros gross a year at Barca, that's around £125m," BBC Sport columnist Guillem Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Take off about 40-50% for tax.

"He agreed to stay at Barcelona by reducing his wages by 50%, not more than that because that's illegal [under Spanish law]. Basically the league wouldn't believe he was reducing his wages to zero, which is what Barcelona may have tried to do as they are 1bn euros in debt. Basically they cannot afford him."

  5. Why did Messi leave Barcelona?published at 22:17 British Summer Time 10 August 2021

Keeping Messi at the Nou Camp had been president Joan Laporta's top priority this summer, but attempts to agree a new contract were severely complicated by the club's financial problems.

He officially became a free agent when his previous deal expired on 1 July, but it was still widely anticipated he would stay.

However, Barcelona confirmed last week that Messi would be leaving the club because of "financial and structural obstacles".

After six hours teasing on Twitter, PSG have finally announced Messi.

The day that we thought would never happen, Messi dressed in a kit that isn't Barcelona's.

Let's go from the beginning of this historical day.

Luis Suarez was spotted leaving Messi's Barcelona home this morning just before the Argentina star left for Paris to complete his medical after agreeing to a two-year deal.

Antonela Ruccozzo, Messi's wife, posted a social media post saying "with everything towards a new adventure, together the five of us" on their way to Paris looking like kids on their way to Disneyland.

Neymar showed some love on social media also, not hiding his excitement about getting "back together" with his former Barcelona partner.

The excitement and anticipation built up all over the world and after five teaser videos from PSG, Messi is officially announced.

Just like his start with Barcelona, Messi will be wearing the no.30 with PSG's no.10 comfortably on Mbappe's back.

And now we'll see Leo Messi and Sergio Ramos on the same team.
