  3. 'Disbelief, denial, grief'published at 17:52 British Summer Time 10 August 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

La Liga presenter Semra Hunter on BBC Radio 5 Live: "There's been so much going wrong with the club for a long period of time now I think this is the icing on the cake for so many fans that are really angered and frustrated with the way things have been handled. In particular now losing the greatest player of club history. So there certainly has been a full spectrum of emotions. A lot of people at first trying to deal with the shock of the announcement that he wasn't going to be re-signed by the club or re-registered with La Liga.

"Disbelief, denial, grief as if somebody was leaving the family. They take it really personal here of course because so many people week in week out they would go to the Camp Nou. They have been following his career since the day he stepped foot in Barcelona when he was 13-14 years old. So they have grown up with him in a lot of ways so it really does feel like one of the family members is leaving. Not just leaving because he wants to but because he's been forced out.

"So it's been so difficult for fans in Barcelona to take the news and grapple with it. They have no other choice but to accept the reality because he is now a PSG player. it's going to be unveiled officially tonight or tomorrow so now it's time to plan for the post-Messi era and a new way forward for Barcelona."

Southampton have signed striker Alan Armstrong from Blackburn for a fee which could be worth more than £20m with add-ons.

Southampton were in need of a striker after selling 29-year-old England international Danny Ings to Aston Villa for £25m earlier this month.

Armstrong said: “It’s unbelievable to be here – such a massive club with a great fanbase and it’s just something that I’m really looking forward to.

“I thought it was perfect as my next step. I wanted to get back to the Premier League from what I’ve done for Blackburn, so I’m over the moon.”
