  5. 'Barca still have talent'published at 15:40 British Summer Time 10 August 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Spanish football journalist Alvaro Romeo on BBC Radio 5 Live: "This move was going to happen at some point, unfortunately it happened when Messi wanted to stay. But it is true as well with Lionel Messi Barcelona haven't been that competitive over the last few years because Messi's game faded away, not exactly but it's true that he is a very gravitational player

"A lot happens from him and he takes a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and I do believe that some other players have alluded responsibility when Messi was on the pitch. Not because they were lazy or anything like that but because they were too respectful of the teammate they had because he was clearly better than them.

"So I think that this is going to be some sort of catharsis for players like Antoine Griezmann, Memphis Depay if they can register him the likes of Frenkie de Jong they will step up now I'm sure that they will do and Barcelona will still be competitive but ten years ago they were the power force of football. It will be a process to get used to Barcelona without Messi but I do think they have some promising talent in their squad too."

  6. 'The sadness is tremendous'published at 15:32 British Summer Time 10 August 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Spanish football journalist Alvaro Romeo on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Very sad to be honest. At the end of the day Lionel Messi was a way of watching football as well. I've been for the last 15 or 17 years watching Barcelona games, looking at the bottom right corner of my screen or the left top corner of my screen or wherever Messi was. Basically the game was what Messi did.

"It was all about him, the magic he could create. When I was watching Barcelona in the past I was watching Messi and ten more players. The sadness is tremendous for the city of Barcelona.

"As well you have seen many people asking Messi, begging Messi to stay in the Barcelona training facilities as well but that didn't happen and it is a tremendous loss for Barcelona and La Liga as well because let's not forget that La Liga is a brand itself Lionel Messi was the best player they have."

  7. Barca snatched away the contract offerpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 10 August 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Spanish football journalist Alvaro Romeo on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Was PSG move inevitable? Definitely. Number one Lionel Messi wasn't staying at Barca and two there's only one candidate that made a genuinely good offer for Messi.

"PSG is his destination after a long time at which it looked like Lionel Messi could end up being a Barcelona player again. But the club couldn't meet the La Liga's financial salary cap and Messi had to depart Barcelona.

"He thought last Thursday that he was going to sign for Barcelona for another two years and in the end Barcelona took the contract from his hands and told him they couldn't offer him that contract."

So now we know for sure that the day Barcelona never thought they would see is upon them.

After more than 20 years, 778 games, 672 goals, 35 trophies including 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and numerous personal records and honours, Lionel Messi has left Barcelona.

Even as he packed his bags in readiness for a new life at Paris St-Germain, rumours were swirling around the Catalan capital that Barcelona were on the verge of making a last-ditch offer that would keep him at the club, rumours that sources close to both sides were quick to deny. It was not going to happen.

Rumours were started more in hope than expectation by a Catalan media outlet, perhaps unable to grasp the unimaginable reality that from now on this will be a Barcelona without Messi. If they are unable to accept it, imagine how Messi must be feeling.
