  1. Saul Niguez to Chelsea may happenpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    BBC Sport

It had been thought Chelsea had given up on trying to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid.

But I am hearing it might not be done.

Negotiators are working hard behind the scenes to put something together that works for both parties.

Might be a late one but it could happen.

This transfer window has played with the emotions of Wolves fans quite a lot, it appears, and might do so for a few hours yet. Perhaps, if they don’t end up signing either Renato Sanches or someone of similar standing, those stirrings will continue for a while afterwards too.

It has been a strange few weeks. Early in the summer, following the change of coach from Nuno to Bruno Lage, there was general acceptance that Wolves could be in a degree of trouble if they didn’t make several high-quality signings, having been so obviously short-handed last season.

Their business so far has been respectable but maybe not on the scale anticipated. Yet, after the three performances against Leicester, Tottenham and Manchester United the mood has been much lighter, notwithstanding the absence of any points or goals. Who wouldn’t want to join a club playing as excitingly as Wolves did in those games?

By the time you read this, the wishes of the fans might have been fulfilled. But if nobody else does join today, a section of Wolves’ support is likely to be stewing – at least until they next play a week on Saturday. And don’t even suggest that any other club might try to come in for Ruben Neves or Adama Traore…

  7. 'Ings the biggest loss'published at 15:34 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

Glen de la Cour, Total Saints Podcast:

"Saints problems last year didn’t so much concern the standard of the best 11, but the standard of the squad players behind that. We need academy graduates to be of the required level to step into the first team and too many of them weren’t. Some, who had reached 22-25, and obviously weren’t going to make the grade, have now been shipped out.

"We have also cleared up some of the mess from previous bad recruitment, with the exits of Angus Gunn, Mario Lemina and Wesley Hoedt. This in turn has freed up a lot of wages. That said, we've also lost three players we didn’t necessarily want to lose - Ryan Bertrand, Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard. Bertrand was out of contract and the other two had one year left, with no intention of signing a new deal. Saints did manage to eventually secure good money for Ings and Vestergaard, cushioning the blow a bit.

"Ings, of course, was the biggest loss and his very cold admission, having signed for Aston Villa, that he only ever saw Saints as a ‘one contract thing’, bearing in mind that he is also a local lad, certainly stung a bit. All three are decent, experienced players, but shouldn't be deemed irreplaceable."

  9. Boro bring in Sporting's Sporarpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

Not too much has happened in the Championship so far today, so trust Neil Warnock to get deadline day moving.

The Middlesbrough boss has brought in Slovenia international striker Andraz Sporar, 27, on a season-long loan from Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon.

Prior to joining Sporting, Sporar was the top goalscorer in the Slovakian top flight for two years running, netting 34 goals in 36 appearances as Slovan Bratislava won the title in 2019.

Wales boss Rob Page on Daniel James: "At this moment in time he’s been told he can leave and he’s got himself a move to a club that wants him.

"You want all your players to think like that. We all like confidence & being told we’re doing well. He’s no different to all players. We want them all playing competitive football at a club where they’re loved."

  11. Lingard likely to stay at Man Unitedpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport football reporter on Radio 5 Live

Jesse Lingard is going to stay at Manchester United, I'm pretty sure. West Ham have earlier today announced that they've signed Nikola Vlasic, a Croatian midfielder, they've paid around £25m for him.

He plays in roughly the same area of the pitch as Lingard. When you consider West Ham have already got Said Benrahma, Michail Antonio who's doing very well, Jarrod Bowen - they're an excellent team at the moment.

The addition of another attacking player - I don't think they need another in the form of Jesse Lingard. Maybe for Lingard, he thinks: 'I helped West Ham finish in the top six, so I belong in a top six team' and maybe he doesn't think West Ham is the right move for him.

His contract is up at the end of this season, so he may have more options then than he has this summer.

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport football reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

It seemed for a while last week that Man City were in pole position to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. The way it's been articulated to me is that senior figures at Manchester United thought: 'We just can't allow Cristiano Ronaldo to join Manchester City.'

In the end, there were lots of things going on behind the scenes but Sir Alex, on Friday, had a conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo and that was the final thing that sealed his return.

  16. Sevilla's stance on Jules Koundepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Chelsea

Sevilla have rejected Chelsea's "unsatisfactory" offer for France defender Jules Kounde.

The Spanish club are standing firm over the fee required for Kounde, insisting he will not be allowed to join the Blues for less than his 80million euros release clause.

Sevilla sporting director Monchi, confirmed In a press conference a bid had been rejected for the 22-year-old.

"The only formal offer from Chelsea came last Wednesday," he said.

"We weren't satisfied with the offer, and it was linked to Chelsea selling a player. It was a decent fee but it didn't meet our criteria.

"We haven't spoken with Chelsea since Friday night."

  18. 'Added players with class and experience'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Brentford

Billy Grant, podcaster and blogger for Beesotted:

"Brentford acted really early in the transfer market and I’m delighted with the business they have done so far. The very team that got promoted from the Championship was built with the Premier League in mind with the club looking at players like Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbuemo, David Raya, Christian Norgaard, Rico Henry and Ethan Pinnock to make the step up fairly seamlessly. But we’ve also added players with class and experience to our ranks - quite different to how we normally operate where we are used to picking up players who need a fair amount of development.

"Adding to the squad we have centre back Kristoffer Ajer signed from Celtic - a Rolls Royce of a ball-playing centre-back. Frank ‘The Tank’ Onyeka from FC Midtjylland - a a box-to-box midfielder who has added steel and energy to our midfield. Yoane Wissa who adds pace to our left wing - a hole left by Said Benrahma who left a year ago and adding midfielder Myles Peart-Harris and goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez, we almost have a full house.

"Outgoings, Emiliano Marcondez - who scored the second goal in the play-off final against Swansea - left on a free transfer to Bournemouth. Henrick Dalsgaard left for FC Midtjylland in a deal that suited both clubs."

  20. Saul move to Chelsea looks unlikelypublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

A loan move to Chelsea for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez looks very unlikely now after talks broke down.

Given that a move for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde also looks to have hit the skids, I suspect it’ll only be outgoings at Stamford Bridge today.

The club is assessing options for midfielders Ross Barkley and Ethan Ampadu, among others.
