Dean Smith is a man in a hurry to restore his reputation - and it took him only days to return to the Premier League's managerial front line at Norwich City after being sacked by Aston Villa.

He was self-evidently not in the Canaries' thoughts when they sacked Daniel Farke on 6 November, minutes after their first Premier League win of the season at Brentford. At that point, Smith was still in charge at Villa Park.

Smith's dismissal at Villa less than 24 hours later pushed the door at Carrow Road ajar for a swift comeback before it opened wide when Frank Lampard withdrew his interest in the job.

In simple terms, this is a sound appointment.

The Premier League is back - and for three clubs, it is also the start of a new era after changing managers during the international break.

After three games in interim charge of Newcastle, Graeme Jones has made way for Eddie Howe, who becomes Steve Bruce's permanent successor.

Aston Villa lured Steven Gerrard from Rangers after sacking Dean Smith, who then made an instant return to management with Norwich, after the Canaries dismissed Daniel Farke.

So how will they get on? Have your say here.

Premier League leaders Chelsea, meanwhile, welcome back England midfielder Mason Mount, who has missed the Blues' past three games due to dental surgery.

He replaces Ross Barkley from their 1-1 draw with Burnley, while Trevoh Chalobah comes in for Andreas Christensen, with Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic fit enough for places on the bench as they make their respective returns from injury too.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Havertz.

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Loftus-Cheek, Barkley, Ziyech, Pulisic, Werner.

Aston Villa job is not a stepping stone to Liverpool - Gerrard

Steven Gerrard says it’s "very unfair" to call Aston Villa a stepping stone towards his dream of one day becoming Liverpool manager.

He has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Villa after leaving Rangers last week.

"I'm all-in and I will give this job everything that it needs for it to be a success. I'll be 100% committed and so will my staff.

"It's very unfair and you'll never hear me saying it's a stepping stone. For me, I'm really honoured and proud to be in this position."

New Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will miss his first game in charge after testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

The Magpies, who are second bottom in the Premier League, host Brentford at 15:00 GMT.

Assistant head coaches Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will take charge of the team in Howe's absence.

"I'm very disappointed that I won't be there with you all at St James' Park tomorrow," said Howe.

"I have been, and will be, in constant communication with my coaching team and the players, and I know they will be giving everything on and off the pitch."

    The Premier League is back!

We've got PLENTY to stick our teeth into today.

Eddie Howe will keep an eye over his first Newcastle game from his bed because of coronavirus.

And there's two stand-out ties between Leicester and Chelsea, and Liverpool and Arsenal.
