Earlier on, Spain beat Finland 4-1 in the first Group B match. Finland head coach Anna Signuel, the former Scotland boss, was impressed with Spain and thought they would take some stopping at this tournament.

"I think we played a really good game but Spain, as we were expecting, were fantastic," said Signuel.

"Compared to the Spain of five years ago, they've improved a lot and they have so many quality players.

"Of course they will miss [injured Alexia] Putellas and [Jennifer] Hermoso but did well with the players that came on."

The game at Stadium MK was watched by a crowd of 16,819, the 11th highest attendance in the competition's history and highest for a group phase match when a host team was not playing.

"It was a fantastic atmosphere," added Signuel. "The players were on the verge of crying when they came out and saw all the fans, it was amazing."

Pernille Harder has had fewer touches of the ball than Denmark's goalkeeper, underlining how the Danes are struggling to get her into the game.

There's a lot of chatter on the Denmark bench. It looks like changes are afoot.

It's about being ruthless for Germany. If they don't take their chances the longer the game goes on, the more the pressure builds and the more Denmark will feel they still have a chance.

Denmark needed to go into half time without conceding a second and they did that thanks to the woodwork and the goalkeeper. They need to get forward a bit more and I want to see Pernille Harder getting more involved in the game.

First of all we saw Denmark press Germany really high, but after that it was a totally different dynamic. The goalkeeper, Lene Christensen, has made two really important saves to keep Denmark in the game.

  11. 'The goals were dedicated to Putellas'published at 20:56 British Summer Time 8 July 2022

    Spain 4-1 Finland

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Stadium MK

Earlier on today, Spain beat Finland 4-1 in the first match of Group B, with reigning Ballon d'Or holder Alexia Putellas watching from the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury on Tuesday that is expected to keep her out of action until 2023.

Spain head coach Jorge Vilda said: “We had to turn the game around and I can’t remember the last time we had to stage a comeback after conceding an early goal. We fell behind and managed to score four goals.

“There are always things to improve as we prepare for the next one. I tried to transmit that calmness [at half-time]. In the second half we improved in transition and tried some different systems and that’s how we won the game.

“The possession stats were in our favour and we had plenty of chances, but this tournament goes quickly so we now need to think about Germany.

“It wasn’t the best performance that we’re capable of so we are here to improve. The goals were dedicated to Alexia [Putellas] – that’s a big strength of ours.

“We had five or six more chances to score and that is good as it shows we have many ways of scoring goals."

Schüller held her run to perfection and should have done better. Should have scored for me but she hit it straight at Christensen. Christensen has kept Denmark in the game. If it weren't for her and the woodwork, it could have been a lot worse.

Germany settled better than Denmark. They look really dangerous when they get the ball down the left with Klara Buhl and Svenja Huth on the right, and Lena Oberdorf in the middle is bossing it. It's brilliant to watch.
