Vivianne Miedema is a wonderful player for club and country. She has added versatility to her game which gives the manager more options.

She doesn’t celebrate goals. That shows what a humble player she is and how lucky you’d be to play with her. I’d love to play with a player like that.

The hardest thing [for the Netherlands] is staying on top when you're a winning side. That’s the challenge.

It is good to see a grand old stadium like Bramall Lane hosting some of these Euro 2022 matches.

It is the oldest major stadium in the world that still hosts professional football matches and has been Sheffield United's home since 1889.

A few years later, in 1895, the first women's football match in Sheffield took place, external a stone's throw away from this stadium - two touring teams from the British Ladies Football Club went head-to-head in front of a crowd of 3,000.

Netherlands manager Mark Parsons is the fourth English manager to manage in a Women’s Euro, after Martin Reagan, Ted Copeland and Hope Powell.

However, he is the first not to be England manager.

  4. 'Eriksson is consistently so good'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 9 July 2022

Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

Magdalena Eriksson said she doesn't like to be the star player, she doesn't need to be the one that is noticed. You need players like that in your team.

We used to play alongside a player we all know in Katie Chapman. The work she used to put in used to go unnoticed by others but we appreciated her in our team. Eriksson is exactly that for Chelsea and country. She constantly delivers and is consistently so good.

Despite being traditionally recognised as one of the world's best teams, Sweden have only ever won one major trophy.

That was back in 1984, in the first ever European tournament to get official Uefa status, when they won a two-legged final against England after triumphing in a penalty shootout.

Somebody well placed to reflect on Sweden's near misses is goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl, who made her international debut more than 20 years ago.

This summer's Euros is her 15th major tournament. At home she has several silver and bronze medals from World Cups, Euros and Olympics, so why haven't Sweden been able to take that last step?

"Maybe it's the mentality - the Jante mentality," Lindahl, 39, tells BBC Sport.

Jantelagen - the law of Jante - is a well-known Nordic concept and code of conduct about maintaining modesty and not bragging; an ethos of equality and not believing oneself to be better than anyone else.

The Dutch fans definitely outnumbered the Sweden fans by some way during my wander around the city before kick off.

Ilyana, Anna and Arenda have travelled Groningen to Sheffield for the weekend to watch the Netherlands' opening group game tonight.

They had been enjoying the atmosphere before kick off.

"We've been out since the start of the afternoon. It has been really good, nice weather and a lot of nice people," says Ilyana.

"Tomorrow we are going home. I think we will win 2-1. Vivianne Miedema is one of the biggest stars in this Netherlands team, she can score very easily. I think she will get both goals."

This is the second Women’s Euros meeting between the Netherlands and Sweden, with the Dutch winning 2-0 in the 2017 quarter-final on home soil.

The most recent meeting between was in July 2019 at the World Cup, a 1-0 win in extra time for the Dutch thanks to a goal from Jackie Groenen.

There's a few England-based players in the Dutch squad including Manchester United midfielder Jackie Groenen.

I spoke to her at Old Trafford a few months ago about the prospect of playing in front of her club fans at Leigh Sports Village.

The Netherlands will play Portugal in their second group match at the home of Manchester United.

"I’m very excited because obviously we won the tournament last time. It will be a special one for us," she said.

"I feel like I’m getting two home Euros because the last one was in the Netherlands and now it’s here in England.

    "I’ll feel right at home."

Be it football or Formula 1, one of the most recognisable groups of travelling fans are those from the Netherlands.

Decked out in the bright orange colours of their national team they are hard to miss at any sporting venue where their team or star athletes perform, and that has been the case today.

I spotted a big double decker bus slapped in orange paint all over on my way over from Manchester, where the Dutch team is based, and in Sheffield they can be seen throughout the city.

Sweden are well supported too, with 2,600 tickets sold and more having likely turned up tonight.

Sweden are Olympic finalists and finished third at the World Cup. They're the best team in terms of balance. A good depth of experience and youth. Some of them have played together a long time. They're flying quietly under the radar but will be very competitive and strong.

  11. Dutch team 'itching to play'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 9 July 2022

Netherlands manager Mark Parsons says his players are "itching" to begin their European Women's Championship defence against Sweden on Saturday.

The Dutch won the tournament in 2017, although Englishman Parsons is leading them for the first time at a major tournament.

He replaced Sarina Wiegman, who is now in charge of England's national team, in May last year.

"We're ready to play," the 35-year-old said. "After you see a few games on TV you're just itching to get out there and play."

Travelling fans must be wondering what all the fuss about British weather being rubbish is.

It has been glorious all day in Sheffield, where Sweden and Netherlands fans have been mingling outside bars or in the superb fan zone, where the atmosphere has been festival-like all afternoon.

That's where I met Franz, Linnea and Johanna, who have travelled over from Stockholm to cheer on Sweden for two of their group games, and the sunny Sheffield weather is not the only surprise they are expecting today.

"I think Sweden will win 2-1 tonight," says Linnea.

"It will be a hard match but I think they will win."

"My expectations, and the general public's, are quite high. After bronze at the 2019 World Cup and a silver at the Olympics, Sweden have to be seen as one of the big favourites.

"On top of that, quality wise, I'd say the squad was even better now than it was at those two tournaments. Several players have been doing incredibly well at their club teams in the biggest leagues in Europe, and there is a great balance between very experienced players and young/hungry ones."

A shame we don't get to see Vivianne Miedema and Stina Blackstenius go head-to-head, at least from the start of this match.

The two are Arsenal team-mates but an old thigh injury resurfaced during the team's preparations and consequently the Sweden forward has to make do with a place on the bench.

Bramall Lane is slowing filling up, luminous orange contrasted by bright yellow at either end of the ground.

A boost for Netherlands as first-choice left-back Dominique Janssen is fit enough to take her place in the side.

Star forward Vivianne Miedema leads the line, flanked by Lieke Martens and Jill Roord.

Netherlands XI: Van Veenendaal, Wilms, Van der Gragt, Nouwen, Janssen, Groenen, Van de Donk, Spitse, Roord, Miedema, Martens.

For Sweden, Lina Hurtig replaces Stina Blackstenius, who has been struggling with a thigh injury.

Sweden XI: Lindahl, Eriksson, Bjorn, Ilestedt, Andersson, Seger, Angeldal, Glas, Rolfo, Hurtig, Asllani.
