  1. 'Early stages of development'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 13 July 2022

    Mariana Cabral
    Sporting Lisbon coach

Portugal landed on a parachute to the Euros. We weren't expecting it, but I do believe Portugal can take what has happened in a positive way.

We are still in the very early stages of development. We have great players but most of our players are very young. This will be another opportunity for growth like the first time we qualified for the Euros in 2017.

I'm pretty sure they will want to do better than the first time at the Euros. We have a team that is very well organised defensively, that is hard to beat, but we need to do a little bit more offensively.

It is great news just to be there, but I don't think the Portuguese coach and the players will be happy with just that - they will want to do a bit more.

MOTDx In The Making: How Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema became a football icon

Arsenal striker Miedema, 25, is the Netherlands' all-time top goalscorer and was part of the squad who won Euro 2017 and reached the 2019 World Cup final. She has won three domestic leagues titles - one with Arsenal and two with Bayern Munich. She is also the Women's Super League's record goalscorer and at 15, was the youngest player to debut in the Eredivisie.

    Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall:

"She has great game intelligence and great technique. What is also world class, but people don't necessarily see, is her physical ability.

"She's very explosive and strong. The combination of those make it very difficult for opponents to play against her."

  4. Leigh painted orange for the daypublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 13 July 2022

I'm not sure Leigh has experienced anything like this.

They have been pumping house and techno music - and chucked in a bit of Robbie Williams for good measure - from the town's Civic Square since about 2.30pm.

The Civic Square is next door to the library. Good luck to anyone in there hoping for a peaceful afternoon.

It's been like a day time rave.

The rugby league town has been painted orange for the day and locals have been lapping up the pre-match atmosphere with the travelling supporters from the Netherlands and Portugal.

Fair to say there are more Dutch in town than Portuguese.

  6. All to play forpublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 13 July 2022

    Netherlands v Portugal (20:00 BST)

Portugal are no pushovers. They demonstrated as much in their first game by coming back from two early goals to draw 2-2 with Switzerland.

It means Francisco Neto's side come into this game off the back of a five-game unbeaten run.

They will see the current state of Group C as a big opportunity, with a win tonight leaving them in the box seat for qualification, albeit with Sweden to come.

  7. From Amsterdam to Leighpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 13 July 2022

It might look like a postcard scene in Amsterdam but this was the centre of Leigh about 3.30pm today.

Around 950 Dutch fans have made their way to the Greater Manchester town - which is better known for rugby league than football - and they're all having a great time.

John Sarvis and Miek Verbers, who are pictured below, were in Brazil when the men's national team reached the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup.

"We like Leigh very much and I definitely want to go to a rugby match in the future," said Miek.

    Netherlands v Portugal (20:00 BST)

Defending champions the Netherlands are missing several players due to injury and Covid - including their record scorer Vivianne Miedema.

Lyon's Damaris Egurrola and Lineth Beerensteyn of Juventus are among those coming into the side.

Netherlands XI: Van Domselaar, Olislagers, Janssen, Van der Gragt, Wilms, Egurrola, Roord, Spitse, Martens, Beerensteyn, Van de Donk.

Portugal are unchanged from the side that came from 2-0 behind to secure a point in their first game against Switzerland.

Ana Borges becomes Portugal's most capped player as she makes her 146th appearance.

Portugal XI: Pereira, Marchao, Costa, Gomes, Amado, Pinto, Dolores Silva, Norton, Borges, Diana Silva, J Silva

  9. Dutch should winpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 13 July 2022

    Netherlands v Portugal (20:00 BST)

The Netherlands still have the edge on paper this evening, even without their star name.

Portugal’s last win over the Dutch came back in December 2001 in a World Cup qualifier, when Sonia scored a brace in a 2-1 victory. It is 7,522 days since that win.

This is actually the first meeting between the Netherlands and Portugal since they faced in qualifying for the 2015 World Cup.

The Dutch won 7-0 away from home in October 2013 and 3-2 at home in September 2014, with Miedema scoring a hat-trick in both games.

This was the tweet from the Dutch national team confirming Miedema's absence from the side for tonight's game.

To translate, they confirm she will "be in isolation for the next few days" before adding: "When she no longer has any symptoms and tests negative, she can rejoin the selection."

Having earned a very credible draw with world number two side Sweden in the opening game, how can they expect to do against Portugal?

As blows go, they don't come much bigger than the Netherlands losing their all-time record scorer.

Vivianne Miedema is a global superstar, one very familiar to WSL fans (and goalkeepers).

But she will not be featuring for her country this evening following a positive Covid-19 test.

The reigning Euros champions could really do with a win too.
