Norway coach Martin Sjogren: "We had higher belief in ourselves than to be out of the tournament this soon. So of course, I feel I feel totally empty."

Norway captain Maren Mjelde: "I feel empty. I feel a bit sick, actually. It's not a good feeling at all. It's an empty feeling - hard to describe, really - because it ended this way for us."

England assistant coach Arjan Veurink speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

"We spoke about lots of potential scenarios and this [Covid] was one of them - my compliments go to the staff and players group because we reacted really well.

"We plan for scenarios and the world we are living in it could happen - we spoke about it and we're well prepared. She's managing the staff and players brilliantly.

"The first 30 minutes to be fair to NI they did well - we didn't use the right spaces to play in and that's one of the things we tried to put some attention on - we did really well in the first part of the second half and sometimes when they are defending in a low block it is really difficult."

On substitutes: "It's brilliant - it's a great team to work with and we know we have a strong team. As a coaching group it's really good to get different players on the pitch and we're happy with them as well it's a good team performance tonight."

Will Wiegman be back for quarter-finals? "We have to see - we have to manage it day by day, hopefully she is back in business as soon as possible."

    Caragh Hamilton

It's been an incredible experience for Northern Ireland. We have talked so much about the legacy these girls are leaving but legacy is not going to do it on its own. They need the backing now to make sure they can keep pushing on.

Northern Ireland struggled to keep possession for long spells. Every time we got a goal kick or something like that we gave the ball back to England and it is so difficult to keep that work-rate up and defend for so long.

  6. 'It's been an amazing two weeks'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-5 England

    Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland captain Marissa Callaghan speaking on BBC Three:

"For the players the legacy is that we believed we could compete in this tournament, it was a far cry for us four or five years ago we never thought we would make it and I felt we played really well at times against top sides and players. We have to believe that we can challenge the top sides.

"There's a massive gulf - we'll go back on Monday and it will be a big wake up call, we've been full-time since January together but soon we'll go back to our normal jobs and lives and we have to try to keep the momentum. We have to keep investing in women's football - the Irish FA, our leagues we have to make them better. I hope that we can get more sponsorship and push on because we are capable of doing that and playing more in these big tournaments.

"At times in each of the games we've really battled and stood shoulder to shoulder with top players and sides, in the past playing England we created no chances but today we went for it. Unfortunately we didn't score any but we did have chances and we have to take something from that - the gulf is massive and when they come on in the second half and change subs like for like it's hard to compete. But I'm so proud every player left everything on the pitch and it's been an amazing two weeks.

"The fans have been amazing - a thousand of our fans and we could hear them over everything. The girls have really appreciated them being here, they've been outstanding and so we're thankful to them all."

  7. Russo causes problems with 'movement'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 15 July 2022

    BBC Three

Ian Wright: "With all the players we have in and around Alessia Russo, stay in there. Don’t be in a hurry to come out of the box. Stay in between defenders.

"Great turn, fantastic [for her goal]. She gives herself the position where she is available. It didn’t happen a lot in the first half with the number nine. She’s done it and finished brilliantly."

Alex Scott: "Once again those subs make a huge impact. What can you bring coming off the bench. The movement in and around the box. It’s her positioning, get on the back shoulder. That’s not an easy header."

Caragh Hamilton: "I think it's something Wiegman has done well. She has given them opportunities but she’s saying you take your opportunity whenever we give it to you. She’s injected patience into them. They know they can come on and make an impact."

    More from Fran Kirby:

On absence of Sarina Wiegman: "All the work that you do has been done - she's been speaking to us virtually and been in on the meetings. She's been a credit in how she's handled it but a lot of the work is done previously - we know the game plan and we know what's expected of us and we just have to go out and execute it. Hopefully she enjoyed watching us scoring a lot of goals today and she can come back and join us soon.

"Really happy to get three wins and get out of the group that was the first priority - we're delighted to get in the quarter-finals but it's business as usual tomorrow. Do our analysis, recovery and overall just do what we need to do to get ready. There's a relaxed atmosphere but a determination in the squad to make sure we're ready to go. With the other players who are coming in it's really increasing our levels."

On Northern Ireland: "I think it will be massive [to grow women's game in NI] - they are a credit to themselves. It's not easy playing in your first tournament, they've been incredible. They have every right to be here, they put on a good show, the fans are incredible it's a massive congratulations to get here and hopefully they can keep building and come back and do one better next time."

England goalscorer Fran Kirby speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

"I've been wanting to get a goal through the tournament and have been getting myself in good positions bit it hasn't come off for me. Luckily today I was in the right place and I got good contact on the ball and it was one of those you're watching to see if it goes in so when it did I was just really happy to open my account.

"We spoke before the game about having a positive start, we felt our starts in the previous two games had been a bit slow so we wanted to make sure we got good possession of the ball and looked after it and I felt we did that even though the goal didn't quite come. I'm just happy it went in and got the ball rolling and it just relaxed us and we could play the game a bit more."

On the substitutes: "It's amazing - they've been doing it every game when they've come in. They've held themselves really well, they come in and they're hungry and they want to get on the score sheet and that's what you want from your players. It's not easy being a substitute in a tournament when all you want to do is play and I think the girls have been absolutely amazing. The way they have handled themselves, the positive energy, the training levels helping us be ready for the games and when they come in and make performances like that it's amazing."

    FT: Northern Ireland 0-5 England

    Stephen Craigan
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you watched England play Norway and see how much Norway struggled against them it was always going to be ominous for Northern Ireland. They have strength in depth, quality, every attribute that a successful team wants and needs and that is where they are. They are enjoying the moment and it's not phasing them playing in a home tournament. Every player seems to be on their metal - they all want to be part of it and want to be part of something special that seems to be brewing.

Unfortunately for NI tonight it was always going to be backs to the wall, they didn't really lay a glove on England but there is a huge gulf in class.

For England the Championship potentially awaits them.

I can not see Alessia Russo starting the next match and I know that sounds bizarre when she came off the bench at half-time and scored two and should've scored more. It's a quarter-final likely to be against Spain, let's not jump the gun.

Ellen White is starting for England and leading that line on Wednesday night I can assure you.

England striker Alessia Russo on BBC One: "I enjoy every game in an England shirt and to come on and score is great. I just got in the right place at the right time, and was able to put it in the back of the net.

"I should have finished that last one but we will move on to the next game. I've been watching Ian Wright's goals this week and maybe that helped me. Obviously I want to play in every game for England but I know I have to be patient."

    Ian Wright
Former Arsenal striker on BBC One

They are such a well-oiled machine and it doesn't look like we are going to change the way we play against anyone. I don't think it [Sarina Wiegman not being able to take training] will be as big a problem as some people are making out.

Really impressed with England's second-half performance, a really strong team performance. The three subs changed the game and I think Sarina Wiegman will be happy with that performance in the second half going into the quarter-finals.

    FT: Austria 1-0 Norway

    John Arne Riise
Former Norway defender on BBC Three

Norway deserved to go out. The first game was good against a poor Northern Ireland but they were smashed by England and didn’t turn up today. Tactically they were all over the place. Austria were closer to two or three or four than Norway were to equalising. They didn’t perform. It's a huge disappointment.

There is a big question about the manager. I’m not defending him – he messed up tactically – but the players didn't show a will to win. Blame the manager because he’s responsible but the players were awful. They were well off.
