England remain favourites to win Euro 2022 but now face their toughest test so far in the competition.

Home advantage means that a match which would be 50/50 on neutral ground tips 66/34 in England's favour.

So, England have twice as much chance as opponents Spain of reaching the competition's semi-finals.

I definitely think there will be a lot more nerves going into a knockout game. Doe or die. There is more pressure on this game. Some of the players who have been there before can help the younger players.

I think England are adaptable. I think they’ll press early. Spain forced Germany to adapt their style of play. England might have to play on the counter-attack. Keira Walsh could be crucial.

I spoke with the Spain manager just before the tournament. He was worried about the expectation as everyone thought Spain would win the tournament.

Spain will find the spaces to attack England and England have to be really aggressive.

Spain have made mistakes. We will see if they can fix it today.

Atmosphere really building inside the stadium here at Brighton. Glorious sunshine, lots of noise and all the optimism surrounding England lifted further by the presence of coach Sarina Wiegnman.

The stage is set for the Lionesses' biggest test of their so far flawless Euro 2022 campaign.

Spain have lost all four of their knockout matches at European Championships and World Cups, against Italy (1997), Norway (2013), Austria (2017) and USA (2019).Five of Spain's last six European Championship goals, including all but one of this year's five goals were headers. The other one was the penalty scored against Finland this year. One third of Spain's 15 goals in European Championship history were scored in the 89th minute or later, including their last two.

Massive boost [that Wiegman is here]. As a team that is so well-oiled, it’s going to be a great boost for everyone.

I'm very excited, nervous when England are playing games this big. When I met the team, I saw a team who weren't carried away with the win against Norway. They know this game matters.

I don’t think Spain will be as poor on the ball as Norway were.

Sarina's impact on the team has kept them calm, keep the pressure off. This is another football game to them. They have confidence. You respect this Spain team, but don’t fear them.

You want to press their centre-backs. That’s their weakness. They leave space in behind and we have pace up top.

Also tonight, England striker Ellen White has another opportunity to equal Wayne Rooney's all-time England goalscoring record of 53.

White, the joint-top scorer at the 2019 World Cup, took her overall tally to 52 with her double against Norway.

What better way to create personal history than by firing your side to the last four of a major tournament in the process.

  15. 'It's OK sometimes to not have the ball'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

England boss Sarina Wiegman to BBC One on being back from Covid: "I’m good. It's really nice to be here. We had two scenarios – one for if I was here and one for if I was not. I’m glad it’s the first one.

"It's OK sometimes to not have the ball. We like to have the ball, Spain like to have the ball. That’s their style of play. There will be moments when they’re tight on the ball and it’s not the moment to win it from them. We have to be patient."

  17. Why Beth Mead can win Euro 2022 Golden Bootpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    England v Spain (20:00 BST)

    Kelly Smith
    Former England striker

Beth Mead has put herself right in the forefront of the Golden Boot race at Euro 2022 with five goals so far for England, with a quarter-final to come against Spain.

She has been absolutely sensational and she's at the peak of her career. It's the best I've seen her play, ever. Her performances for Arsenal justified her England selection and she has just carried it on.

She seems relaxed in this tournament. The devastating news she received last summer about not being in the Olympic squad really hurt her and made her angry. She has said herself she was playing angry at Arsenal this season to prove people wrong.

Mead used that hurt and pain to her advantage and improved mentally. She's bounced back and put herself up there as one of the leading players for England. I'm really impressed with how she dealt with it. I'm not sure there are many other players who would have done that in the way she has.

It's driven her on mentally and now she is probably one of the first names on the teamsheet. Having experienced that heartache has made her more focused and driven.

The way she plays for club and country really suits her. Mead is a high-pressing player. At Arsenal they like to win the ball high up the pitch and it is the same with England. She understands what is being asked of her.

  20. 'Not scared'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    England v Spain (20:00 BST)

Despite all the goals and the 100% winning record so far, Spain are seemingly not afraid of England in tonight's game. At least that is what Aitana Bonmati claims.

"It's motivating. I'm not scared. I think my team-mates aren't scared either," said Bonmati.

"We know they are a good team, they are doing many good performances. We have seen their three games in the group stages and they did very well.

"We think we can beat them but we have to improve our style and be better than [Saturday's win over Denmark].

"We have never reached the semi-finals. It's going to be very motivating for us to play against England in their home with the crowd.

"We were born to play this game. We are going to start preparing now. It was our goal [to reach the quarter-finals] and we think that we can be better."
