    England 0-1 Spain

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC One

They've posed problems for England since the start of the game. It's been down the flanks where Spain have been allowed time to deliver. This time Rachel Daly makes a lack of judgement. The ball is fired out into the wide player Athenea del Castillo. Daly dives in and that allows her the ball way too easy. Oh goodness me. It's a precision finish. What can England do to respond?

    England 0-1 Spain

England have it all on now.

Spain are an awful opponent to trail to, with the way they keep hold of the ball.

Fresh territory in this tournament for the hosts and they need a strong response.

It's an excellent finish from Gonzalez. The turn, the finish. It's the first time Spain have picked a player out in the box. She has time to take a touch. It comes from Bonmati and Cardona. England down, big response needed.

It's much better from England. One-touch, two-touch, there's a clear desire to get forward quickly. It's shifted Spain a few times already.

    England 0-0 Spain

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Brighton

England still receiving noisy backing from the crowd here in Brighton but they will know they must improve on that first half. England were stodgy in possession while Spain were smooth and there simply wasn't enough threat - although all that Spanish possession did not amount to much end product either.

Spain have been the better side but still everything to play for.

    Much better from England.

Lucy Bronze's cross from the right is just behind Beth Mead in the box, allowing Spain to clear.

    England 0-0 Spain

England have been more proactive so far this half.

They win the ball high up and forge an attack that ends when Ellen White is caught offside after dragging a ball towards her wide of goal.

    She was well off too.

There is a brief stoppage as a protester tries to attach themself to a post. The stewards are quick to it, though, and whisk them away.

When the free-kick does come in, a foul on a Spain defender halts matters.

[England need to] Believe in their capabilities and what they've shown in this competition so far. Cause Spain a problem rather than worry about what they're doing.

It's tense, it's tetchy, it's tiptoeing towards torturous. It's England in the knock-outs of a major tournament.

    We are back under way.

Spain have made a change, sending on Real Madrid forward Athenea Del Castillo for Marta Cardona.

  17. 'England playing with fear'published at 20:56 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    HT: England 0-0 Spain

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

As an England player, you'd be deflated a little bit because they'd be thinking 'we're not getting near the Spanish players'. I've not watched an England team under Wiegman where I've seen Bronze and Daly play so deep.

I think they have the fear of being knocked out and the fear of what Spain are capable of. But that's what a manager can do in the dressing room at half-time: drive some belief into them.

  18. Williamson and Bright in conversationpublished at 20:54 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    HT: England 0-0 Spain

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport at the Amex Stadium

It's a very different feel at half-time tonight than it was the last time England played at the Amex when they went into the break 6-0 up against Norway and were being celebrated down the tunnel.

This time it's a slightly deflated-looking England side who stroll off at the break.

Captain Leah Williamson was in deep conversation with vice-captain Millie Bright - perhaps working out what they were going to say to the team at half time. The defensive pair have kept England in it with some important clearances.

Lucy Bronze looked exhausted too as she was patted on the back by Jill Scott. She had a strong first half but how long can she keep running back and forth down that line? Lauren Hemp has to give her more support.

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

It’s a mentally tough game for England as they’re being moved from side to side. But we need to be better when we get the ball. We need to be clever about where the passes are going.

Aitana Bonmatí is doing a job on Keira Walsh and she’s also controlling the ball.

Spain deserve respect for the way they’re moving us around. We aren’t holding the ball, we’re not keeping it up front. It’s tough for us, we have to work it out.
