Wow! The absolute audacity to take that strike from that distance to try and catch Frohms.

But this is good from Austria. So much more positive.

Barbara Dunst has been directly involved in more shots (20) without scoring or assisting than any other player at Euro 2022.

Germany mix it up so well. Patient build-up and then there's a period of time when they're more direct.

    Germany 1-0 Austria

Germany's Giulia Gwinn is clipped as she runs onto a return ball just outside the box and she can't believe the referee hasn't given a free-kick. She has a point, it was a foul.

Oh my word, Austria are inches away from a sensational equaliser.

Germany keeper Merle Frohms' clearance hits an Austrian player and lands to Barbara Dunst 45 yards out.

Dunst looks up and fires in a shot which sails over Frohms but hits the crossbar.

Good spell this from Germany. Felicitas Rauch fires in a cross which Svenja Huth meets and has a shot blocked. From the loose ball, Lena Oberdorf drives wide.

Germany have definitely come out firing and I think that half-time talk must have boosted them because they've directly gone onto the Austrian defence and got the shot off.

Firing that warning shot to Austria.

    Germany 1-0 Austria

Germany's Klara Buhl plays a lovely ball across the six-yard box but Barbara Dunst hacks it away.

One more German goal and you'd imagine that's that.

A shame as Nicole Billa doesn't time her run properly from a reverse ball and the flag pops up.

Austria have got to make sure that they got bodies up and beyond Billa because a lot of the time she's just by herself, she's quite prepared to work, quite prepared to be a focal point and get the ball into feet. They have to be prepared to take risks with players and get the numbers forward.

  11. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 46 mins

Fifteen seconds into the second half - and Germany hit the post.

Giulia Gwinn pops up unmarked in the box 14 yards out and her low drive hits the base of the woodwork.

  13. 'Completely different game'published at 21:02 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    HT: Germany 1-0 Austria

    Jen Beattie
Scotland defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a completely different game than I expected. Austria are much more on the front foot, making Germany think more in their own third which I think we didn't see against England.

They've taken the game to Germany and it's been much more open but I'm just curious how much longer they can sustain that going into the second half.

Those types of teams have the experience. They are focused. This is the difference between teams who are used to playing these important games, they are focused from the beginning to the end.

The ones who play from the heart have opportunities, they play, but then they get punished by their lack of focus.

    Anita Asante
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think they've started brightly and put lots of pressure into this German team. Actually, Germany had to defend a lot in their half during the early moments of the game.

They are missing the final bit of quality in the find third and also decision-making.

I'm sure Austria will be really disappointed because they were well organised and had two clear opportunities.

When you play Germany, you better be efficient.

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Austria like to play out from the back and we thought with how good Germany are at pressing they wouldn't do that. They become really comfortable passing round the back and through the lines and Germany struggled to deal with it in the early stages.
