    Everton v Liverpool (20:15 GMT)

    Lawro's predictionImage source, BBC Sport

Mark Lawrenson takes on CBeebies presenter and West Ham fan Ben Cajee for the latest round of Premier League predictions.

    Lawro's prediction: 0-2

However you look at the game, Liverpool have to be favourites. Everton have not won since the end of September and when I watched them against Brentford on Sunday, they never ever really looked like scoring. The Bees could even have won by another goal or two.

Quite often going into these derby games, I think it doesn't matter whether teams are at the top or bottom of the table because they feel so different but, this time, the sheer quality of Liverpool means I cannot see them creating chances without taking some of them.

    Ben's prediction: 0-2

Everton are on a terrible run and Liverpool are flying.

  4. Why Benitez's first derby as Everton boss could be his most importantpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2021

    Everton v Liverpool (20:15 GMT)

    Thomas Mallows
    BBC Sport

Rafael Benitez is a veteran of 14 Merseyside derbies from his time on the red side of the Liverpool divide, but his first in charge of Everton on Wednesday could be his most important.

Benitez, 61, will become the first manager since 1894 to take charge of both Merseyside clubs in a derby, though that achievement is likely to be far from his mind as his Everton side go into the game on a rotten run of form.

The Toffees are without a win in seven Premier League games and dropped to 14th in the table after Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Brentford.

The fans made their displeasure clear at the final whistle and the bookmakers make Benitez - only appointed in June - the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

Read more from BBC Sport's Thomas Mallows on why tonight's Merseyside derby is so important for Rafa Benitez.

OK, it's team news time for the earlier games. Slap your eyes on this lot...

  10. Contextpublished at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2021

So what do all these fixtures mean for the state of the table?

Well, all of the top three are in action, with Chelsea able to steal an early march on Liverpool and Manchester City if they win at Vicarage Road. Any one of the three could end tonight on top, though.

West Ham are ready to make up ground if any of them slip up, with Wolves also sniffing around in sixth.

The game at Molineux is also a big one for the situation at the bottom, with Burnley the visitors and in dire need of a win to close the gap between themselves in 19th and the pack just above the bottom three.

That pack includes Everton, who have been sinking like a stone of late and desperately need to arrest a run of seven games without a win.

  12. What's on?published at 18:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2021

We'll come back to all these Merseyside shenanigans shortly. It may be the headline bout of tonight's card, but that does not diminish the quality of what we have elsewhere in the six fixtures.

We've got one of those awkward splits today, with four matches taking place at 19:30 GMT and the remaining two (of which the Merseyside derby is one) starting 45 minutes later.

    Here's the full running order...

19:30: Southampton v Leicester, Watford v Chelsea, West Ham v Brighton, Wolves v Burnley

20:15: Aston Villa v Man City, Everton v Liverpool

  13. 'I don't like the way it is approached'published at 18:17 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2021

    Everton v Liverpool (20:15 GMT)

"Am I looking forward to Wednesday? I should do, but it's a game people make too much of.

"I don't like the way it is approached. Very often things go over the top. We want to play football there and let's see what the opponent wants."

This is what Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had to say to the BBC after his side's 4-0 win over Southampton at the weekend. What could he be referring to?

I think it would be fair to say that things have happened in recent meetings between the two sides that have added a bit extra to a fixture that really didn't need it.

On top of that, the Blues are now managed by a man who led the Reds to one of their finest ever moments and who is now starting to feel the pressure at his still very new club.

Well look at that. If it isn't one of the Premier League's fiercest derbies.

Yep, the countdown to Christmas gets under way today with a right old ding-dong between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park.

And boy do both sides need a win, for very different reasons.

No chocolate in this advent calendar, I'm afraid. But there is a bit of spice...

  15. What's behind window number one?published at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2021

It's December the 1st, people. Time to crack open that first window of the advent calendar. Is it a window? Or a door? A mate of mine asked that question today. I'd always assumed window, but maybe I'm wrong. What a debate to start the evening, eh?

Anyway, back on track... it's the 1st of December, so what are we getting? A gingerbread Christian Benteke? A Granit Xhaka bauble? James Ward-Prowse curling a free-kick around a wall built of snowmen?
