    Southampton 0-0 Brighton

Double chance for Southampton. Che Adams plays Armando Broja through from the halfway line. He races into the box and has a shot saved by Robert Sanchez.

The Brighton keeper saves a rebound 20-yard chance from Adams too.

    Newcastle 0-0 Burnley

A great contender for this season's 'making the most of some contact' from Charlie Taylor, who swan dives after the mildest of shoves from Miguel Almiron in shielding the ball for a goal-kick.

  3. Postpublished at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Newcastle 0-0 Burnley

Maxwell Cornet is immediately buzzing around up top for Burnley. A pass in his general direction is a bit heavy, though.

    Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

Mohamed Salah flights a ball into the box and Nelson Semedo heads it behind. Corner for the Reds.

    Semedo heads the corner anyway.

'Enjoy the game' are the final words issued over the public address system at St James' Park. Not sure 'enjoy' is the word for many of those here. 'Suffer through in hope' maybe?

  6. Postpublished at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

About three seconds after kick-off Fabinho and Ruben Neves went in for a 50-50 and both hurt themselves. They're fine now.

  7. KICK-OFFpublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

We're under way in the three 3pm kick-offs. A big afternoon for Liverpool, who can go top with a win. An even bigger one for Newcastle, who desperately need that first win of the league season, and Burnley, who can move out of the bottom three.

Paul: Talking about Liverpool rebirth this season. Liverpool did not struggle last season because Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez were injured, more to do with Salah and Mane. The major difference this season is that Salah has been more of a team player.

I went on a run of games with Everton where we kept losing and it's like winning - it becomes like a habit. You kind of accept it.

Newcastle are in a really bad place at the minute and Eddie Howe has a big task ahead. They need character.

Brighton & Hove Albion will be hoping to harness the momentum from the last-minute equaliser against West Ham United in midweek. The jubilant scenes in injury time were akin to a victory but the Seagulls will be fully aware that the winless league run has stretched to nine.

The home team has never won when these sides have met in the Premier League but, with just one goalless draw in the last 13 encounters, we can expect goals.

Former Saints midfielder Lallana misses a return to his former club, while news that Ecuador international Sarmiento could be out for up to four months with a hamstring problem is a cruel blow for a 19-year-old who had to come off just 13 minutes into his first Premier League start.

    • Southampton have lost just one of their eight Premier League meetings with Brighton (W3 D4). However, Saints are winless in all four such games at home against them (D3 L1), going down 2-1 in the most recent encounter.
    • Following their 2-1 win in this exact fixture last season, Brighton are looking to win consecutive away league games against Southampton for the very first time.
    • In south coast derbies (including Bournemouth, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton), Brighton have the lowest win rate in Premier League history, winning just two of their 14 such games (14%). Meanwhile, Southampton have won 41% of those fixtures in the competition (9/22).
  13. Brighton 'will take time' with Lampteypublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Southampton v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

Brighton youngster Tariq Lamptey starts against Southampton this weekend - but boss Graham Potter says he will tread carefully with his dynamic full-back.

The 21-year-old came off the bench against West Ham in midweek to set up Neal Maupay's stunning late equaliser but is only recently back from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the second half of last season.

A firm favourite, Potter knows he'll have to manage Lamptey's workload to avoid further injury setbacks.

"We're going through a period where we're going to play lots of games in a short space of time so that's the only thing that's going to stop the regularity of Tariq," said Potter.

"That close proximity will challenge us in terms of how much he plays and when he plays.

"We all know his qualities and what he brings to the team."

In March, Seagulls boss Graham Potter was left feeling "renewed belief" they could retain their Premier League status after a 2-1 win over the Saints.

Leandro Trossard's emphatic finish settled an entertaining south-coast contest, Danny Welbeck's deft touch freeing the Belgium winger to stride into the box and lash home.

Victory halted a three-game losing streak for Potter's Seagulls, who climbed a place to 16th above Newcastle, three points clear of 18th-placed Fulham and with a game in hand.

The Seagulls had taken an early lead through skipper Lewis Dunk's powerful header from a corner before Che Adams' close-range volley ensured the Saints headed in level at the break.

Adams came closest to a second equaliser for Southampton, but he was brilliantly denied by the outstretched leg of Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl says he "misses the mountains" of his native Austria but is enjoying life on the south coast as he approaches three years in charge at St Mary's.

Since his appointment on 5 December 2018, the 54-year-old has won 38 of 113 Premier League games and has been at Southampton longer than at any of his previous clubs.

Despite that, he has no plans to call time on his career in the Premier League.

"My wife and I enjoy life here very much," he said. "We love the people and we love the respect they give us in every part of our lives.

"I must say I miss the mountains of Austria, but they're not running away - they'll be waiting for me when I return."

He acknowledges life in the Premier League is tough and is passionate about making Southampton a club that connects with the fans.

"It is fantastic to work here and every day we do our best to make the supporters be proud of their club," he said.

"It's the toughest league in the world but it's so enjoyable to work here.

"I'm definitely a much better manager than when I first came."

    Southampton v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

    Lawro's predictionImage source, BBC Sport

    Lawro's prediction: 2-1

Both of these teams drew in midweek, with Saints pegged back twice by Leicester and Brighton equalising late on at West Ham.

The way both games went, I'd say Brighton's result was the better one, but their problem is they keep on drawing and they are not scoring enough goals to win games.

Because of that, and because Southampton's home record is actually quite decent - they have only lost one out of seven league games at St Mary's this season - I think Saints might edge this.

Brighton's current form is not a reason to boo manager Graham Potter or the team, though. If at the start of the season, you'd told any of their fans that they would be in the top eight after 14 games, then they would have been delighted.

But, because they started so well and are not getting the same results anymore, some supporters see things differently.

It’s so tight in the middle chunk of that Premier League table. You might suggest Southampton are looking over their shoulder towards the relegation zone, and yet they’re only four points behind Brighton.

Given the list of players Graham Potter is without today, this is a big chance for Saints to capitalise, as well as giving themselves some breathing space at the bottom.

Singer-songwriter and Liverpool fan Jamie Webster is this week's challenger to BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson in predicting the results of the next round of Premier League matches.

Jamie initially found success by providing the soundtrack to Liverpool's 2019 Champions League triumph with his version of Allez Allez Allez and he has just started a UK tour this week, meaning he missed Wednesday's Merseyside derby.

"I was on stage in Newcastle for the second half," he told BBC Sport. "It was a great result for us and my little brother used my ticket, so I am made up for him that he went and had a good time.

"There were a few people who must have been fans shouting the score out to me when I was on stage but I wasn't even thinking about it because we had such a good night anyway."

There have been many more memorable moments for Jamie, including when he played to 50,000 Liverpool supporters in Madrid on the afternoon of the 2019 Champions League final, and enjoyed a night out with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

"Jurgen walked in on one of my gigs when we were in America, and there was a video of that which was circulated quite a lot," he explained.

"But then the year after, after we'd won the Champions League, he asked me to go for a pint with him in New York when we out there touring. We had a good night - we had a little bevvy and talked abut the successes of the season and stuff like that.

"I've always been made to feel really welcome by Jurgen and he is just as good a fella as he is a football manager as far as I'm concerned. Actually, he's a better person than he is a manager, which tells you how good a person he is."

Diogo Jota rekindled Liverpool's Premier League top-four hopes with the winning goal on his return to Molineux in March.

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in the previous September, drilled a low first-time shot under Rui Patricio to settle a tight contest.

It was a fine way for the Portugal forward to mark his first appearance back at his former employers.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, Mohamed Salah saw a late effort ruled out for offside.

However, more distressing for the hosts was the sight of goalkeeper Patricio leaving the pitch on a stretcher after a lengthy delay following a collision with his captain Conor Coady, while trying to prevent the Egyptian from scoring.
