  1. 'Winning goal was fortunate'published at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    FT: West ham 3-2 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes told BT Sport: "Truthfully, I didn’t think we played that well today. But we got the goals and in other games I don’t think we played any worse or any better but we haven’t got the goals. Today we got the goals to go with it, and to get them against a team that don’t concede many is a great credit to the lads.

"We were much better [in the second half.]. We were too passive and submissive in the first half. They are quality, that is why they are European champions because of the level they can play at. Whether you press them or stay off them, they are very good at both."

On the winner from Masuaku: "I said to him that I thought it was a great cross. It was very fortunate, the goal, but in football you need a bit of fortune sometimes. In the last few games we have lost it a little bit, but today we got it back."

  2. 'Tired minds, tired bodies'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    FT: West Ham 3-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount speaking to Match of the Day: "We have had a difficult week and the game midweek we came away with three points where maybe we shouldn't have. We made mistakes, the same today. We are making mistakes we haven't done for a while and need to bounce back now.

"A lot of games, it can take a toll, but that's not an excuse we can use - we come out here and want to win, it's a derby. We don't concede many, so that is something we need to look at.

"It is mistakes we haven't made, tired minds, tired bodies, but we need to keep the standard high. We regroup and come back next game."

On his goal: "It felt a nice one, but it doesn't mean much really. It travelled a long way so when it's in the air you have tie to make a decision, I instinctively hit it first time."

On a trip to Zenit in midweek: "We are through but we want to finish top, so we want to win the game, we are going away from home, very cold, we have to be ready for that."

What impresses me about Diogo Jota is that Jurgen Klopp has always tried to find a player that can come in for any of that front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Now we're talking about a player that is top of that three with Salah. He's earned the right to play.

  4. Wolves may need something unexpected & explosivepublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

Having counted them all out, Bruno Lage has made a start on counting them all back with the return of Ruben Neves from suspension, and with a bit of luck Daniel Podence will be clear of Covid to be able to play as well if needed. And there is no “if” about it.

For Wednesday’s game against Burnley, only 13 outfield players with any league experience at all were available and, beyond Neves, Podence and the other player recently affected by Covid, Marcal, none are likely to come back until Wolves have battled through December.

Starting with Liverpool, Wolves play all three title contenders in the space of 15 days. Whether it is good to get the hardest games over with when the squad is depleted anyway is a moot point. Wolves have been admirably sturdy in defence on most occasions this season, but their inability to score means there will be a tension from the start against a Liverpool attack in full flood.

However, since moving back up to the Premier League, Wolves have been in the habit of playing some of their best football against the strongest opponents - notably against Liverpool the season before last, despite being rather unluckily beaten twice.

Jurgen Klopp was moved to describe Adama Traore as “unplayable” after one of those games. Until this week, some were thinking that Bruno Lage was interpreting that word in a slightly different way about Traore, as he waited on the bench. Given a chance from the start against Burnley, however, Traore gave a reminder of his mercurial talent, especially with a turbo-sprint and cannonball shot that left the crossbar, and 30,000 heads, shaking for a while – all the drama, but not the finish. One of these days…

It might take something unexpected and explosive to win some of the games Wolves have coming up. Will it be Traore’s day?

  5. 'We had too many mistakes'published at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    FT: West Ham 3-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to BT Sport: "I don't think we did a bad match, it was OK, we can win with this performance.

"It is tough to play here, we did too many individual mistakes, we did already against Manchester United and Watford and got punished - if you want a result at this level you have to minimise mistakes. We talked about it before, it's obviously not helped."

On the penalty: "Everybody is involved, the pass is not the best decision, the orientation is not the best, we can save it but the decision-making is also not the best from Edu in this moment.

"We created a lot of half chances, a lot of touches in the box, but sometimes you need a bit of luck, a deflected shot or loose ball that falls to our feet. Their third one is a strange one, the two big chances they had in the first half were our mistakes.

"We could not finish it with clear and better chances, be more ruthless, we struggled also in defending some situations.

"Every loss is a bump in the road, that will not hold us back from what we demand from us but we need to play more accurate, more stable and reduce big mistakes."

  7. Salah is 'never too selfish' - Klopppublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Wolves v Liverpool (15:00 GMT)

Mohamed Salah has continued to develop to make the right decisions, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Egyptian has twice won the Premier League's golden boot since joining Liverpool but has faced criticism for being too selfish on occasion.

But Klopp says there has never been a need to talk to his striker about that.

"We didn't have a specific talk on that because it wasn't necessary," said Klopp.

"These things happen naturally. It was never a criticism from us that he was too selfish or whatever because he never was.

"He is calm enough and he developed technically again so he has more time to see the right things in the different situations. Very often he makes the right decision."

    • Wolves have won just one of their 14 Premier League meetings with Liverpool (D2 L11), winning 1-0 at Anfield in December 2010. They’ve lost their past nine against the Reds in the competition by an aggregate score of 20-2.
    • Liverpool haven’t lost any of their past eight away league games against Wolves (W5 D3), with their last league defeat at Molineux coming back in August 1981 (0-1).
    • Wolves’ past two Premier League games have ended 0-0 – the last side to draw three games goalless in a row were West Ham in December 2015. However, their opponents Liverpool have scored in their past 24 Premier League games, the longest ongoing such run in the division.

    Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Molineux is usually a happy hunting ground for Liverpool, who have won all of their past five visits there in the Premier League.

Wolves will give them a good game this time, but they can't score at the moment. Finding the net is not an issue for the Reds though - they have averaged more than three goals a game in the league this season, which is a stunning record.

Jamie's prediction: This is a tricky game but we've got the quality to win it - if we turn up. 0-2

Liverpool are riding on the crest of a wave right now. They are scoring goals almost at will and in breath-taking fashion.

They’ve now scored at least two goals in their last 18 matches – an English top-flight record – while their 25 league goals away from home is the best after seven games since Burnley did it in 1961.

Yes, they are like a machine but it was only five games ago that Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten at West Ham, which maybe suggests they are human after all. The game at Wolves could be their biggest test since that, a side proving hard to beat and who have a good record at Molineux of late.

Three games in a week (and a busy period ahead) may prompt Klopp to reintroduce Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and consider a start for James Milner.

While Ibrahima Konate must be starting to get itchy feet on the bench, the manager shows no signs of breaking up the Van Dijk/Matip partnership with the pair featuring in Liverpool’s top five players with the most minutes this season.

  12. Burnley need 'fine details' to turn draws into winspublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Burnley's form belies their current position in the table. They travel to the north east today with a win and four draws from their last five games. Clarets manager Sean Dyche is pleased with his side's unbeaten run but wants them to "activate the fine details" so that resolute draws become wins.

He takes the Clarets to visit Newcastle on Saturday, one of just two teams below them in the table and Dyche says the points tally doesn't yet reflect their performances.

"We've found good balances in our performances recently and we look a threat," he said of a five-game unbeaten streak that includes four draws.

"But we've got to win games and it's not easy to do that in this league.

"Saturday's match is just another game - the next is always the most important but I look across the whole season and try to keep things in balance.

Dyche's team ground out a goalless draw at Wolveson Wednesday after apulsating 3-3 game against Crystal Palacetwo weeks ago and he is keen to get the balance right.

"We were very good defensively the other night but not so on it at the other end of the pitch," he said.

"It's the fine details. If we can activate them, then we'll start turning draws into wins."

  13. 'We never know when we are beaten'published at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    FT: West Ham 3-2 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Jarrod Bowen told BT Sport: “That is what we are about as a team, the character, the belief. We hung in sometimes when it was difficult. We never know when we are beaten, we went behind twice but showed that reaction and a lot better performance.

"We wanted to be on the front foot and press them aggressively and not let them play, which they are good at. We wanted to limit what their game plan was.

"We haven't won in a few games and have been disappointed in ourselves, but to come back and beat Chelsea, what a performance."

On the winner from Arthur Masuaku: "He will tell you he took a shot. It has gone in. We are big on putting balls into the box. Sometimes you may get a bit of luck. He will say he shot, we are just buzzing to get the three points."

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Alan Shearer best XIImage source, BBC Sport

What would Newcastle give to have this front three in their prime this afternoon?

Alan Shearer has picked a Newcastle-heavy team for the best XI he has played with - and other Magpies legends only just missed the cut.

Shearer chose the side for the most recent episode of the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast, along with co-host Micah Richards.

At the back, he carved out a space for Stuart Pearce, who played with Shearer on Tyneside in the late 90s.

"You needed Pearcey in your team. He didn't say a lot but he was as hard as they come. I had to get him in."

In midfield, he went for good friend Robert Lee.

"He could spray a pass as well as anyone," says Shearer. "He started off as a goalscorer midfielder and then became a general. The fans love him and rightly so.”

Joining Lee in midfield, is "stupidly good" Peter Beardsley, although there was no space for fellow mercurial talent David Ginola.

"Ability-wise, Ginola was unbelievable. He sometimes made defenders look like fools, but I probably didn’t see the best of him when I was there."

Up front with Shearer himself was Les Ferdinand, a partnership Shearer regrets lasted for just one season.

"We got 49 goals together that season - and we both missed time with injuries. He was brilliant to have in the team but, stupidly, Newcastle sold him back to Spurs."

Shearer also highlighted players who nearly got in his team.

"The only thing that stopped me putting Shay Given in was that I won the Premier League with Tim Flowers in the team. It was a tough choice."

And he couldn't quite fit in Keith Gillespie on the right wing. How Shearer loved crosses from him.

And the manager? Sir Bobby Robson.

“He saved my career and he took Newcastle from the bottom three to the Champions League. That's the only reason he's squeaked in ahead of Kenny Dalglish."

  15. 'Joelinton can be whatever he wants to be'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

He's taken, shall we say, a bit of stick since he moved to Newcastle, but Joelinton is only going to get better and will be a valuable member of Newcastle’s team, says manager Eddie Howe.

The former Bournemouth boss has been full of praise for the Magpies’ record signing and believes the £40m fee paid to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim in July 2019 is irrelevant.

"I think people put value on players - that's not the player’s fault. For me, Joelinton can be whatever he wants to be," Howe told the media before Newcastle’s bottom-of-the-table match against Burnley on Saturday.

"He's one of those players that can play a number of areas on the pitch. I wouldn't probably label him at this moment.

"He's got very high technical level, he's got a great work ethic. He's got a great physicality and I think he does have the ability also to score goals, so that mixed together and we've got an outstanding individual that will only get better.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him, I wouldn’t swap him. He's going to be a valuable member of our team."

In April, Allan Saint-Maximin inspired a brilliant turnaround as he came off the bench to earn Newcastle a vital 2-1 win at Burnley with a goal and assist in the space of seven minutes.

Steve Bruce's side were second best to a well-drilled Burnley, who took a first-half lead through Matej Vydra following excellent work by Chris Wood.

But after the visitors had a penalty appeal for James Tarkowski's high foot on Sean Longstaff rejected via the video assistant referee, the game turned their way with Saint-Maximin's second-half introduction.

Burnley were threatening to add to their lead when the French winger and forward Callum Wilson came off the bench after 57 minutes.

But Saint-Maximin set up Jacob Murphy for the equaliser following a twisting run, and then scored a brilliant second goal with his left foot to earn a much-needed victory, which lifted Newcastle six points clear of the relegation zone.

The January window is far from their minds today though. The opportunity to win their first game of the season against another team in the bottom three feels like something Newcastle can’t afford to miss. But Burnley will enjoy the chance to silence the crowd and they’re unbeaten in five.

  20. Staying up 'going to be extremely tough'published at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Former Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark says it will be "extremely tough" for the Magpies to stay up this season after a 1-1 draw with Norwich extended their winless start to the campaign to 14 games.

"In any normal season, last night would have been a positive step, getting a point after playing with 10 men for so long," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"But they've still not got a win, the Norwich game was billed as must-win and they didn't. Saturday against Burnley is exactly the same.

"My heart is saying 100% they can stay up but my head is saying it'll be unbelievably difficult from this position.

"The odds are stacked against them."
