No team has stayed up after a worse start - but Newcastle not down yetpublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021
Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)
Alistair Bruce-Ball and Pat Nevin spoke on the Football Daily podcast about Newcastle's hopes of beating relegation this season after not winning any of their opening 14 games.
"You have to look at statistics within the context of the season," argued former Scotland winger Nevin. "They will be able to add to their squad in January - even if they have to pay over the odds for players.
"The quality goes further down the division this season, and there are only two or three teams Newcastle have a chance of catching.
"They are among the favourites to go down, obviously, but are they down yet? No."
"It's obviously going to be difficult because they are massively on the back foot," said Bruce-Ball. "But there are other teams around them - like Norwich, like Burnley, like Watford.
"If Newcastle can keep enough of those teams close, then it doesn't matter that they haven't won yet."
And they believe the fans have a huge part to play as well.
"The atmosphere in the second half was one of the best I have heard anywhere all season," said Bruce-Ball. "It was truly inspirational."
"This is the classic case of a sleeping giant," said Nevin. "They can be turned into something special - it's just whether that happens next season or the season after that."
