Teemu Pukki netted all three goals for Finland's HJK in a 6-3 aggregate defeat against Ralf Rangnick's Schalke in the Europa League play-off round in August 2011.

By the end of that month Pukki had signed for Schalke and made his Bundesliga debut in a 2-0 home defeat versus Bayern Munich on 18 September 2011. Rangnick resigned as manager only a few days later.

  2. 'We've lost to a soft penalty'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to Match of the Day: "I thought Liverpool were better in terms of general play. Their style was better than ours, but we’ve done so well to contain them for large periods. Ultimately the game has been decided by a penalty. There were two penalty incidents in the game, Liverpool got theirs – if you look at that one, Salah fouls Mings first.

"It’s always hard to take when you lose football matches. We knew it was going to be a containing job. You have to ride the first 20-25 minutes against sides like this. We finished the game stronger, with more belief and some good opportunities.

"If an arm goes anywhere near Alisson, it’s a foul. So why isn’t a foul given for Danny Ings? They are the questions I’d like answering, but I can’t answer them right now.

"In hindsight I should have thrown a bit more at it a bit earlier, but you have to be careful Liverpool don’t hit you for two, three or four. We’ve lost to a soft penalty because if you watch it properly, Tyrone’s been fouled first. The disappointing thing is that the referee hasn’t gone to look at it.

"In terms of commitment and application, I couldn’t be more pleased and proud. We have a tough game at Norwich in midweek. It’s an opportunity for us to go there, bounce back and get a positive result."

  3. 'Outstanding for 75 minutes'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports: "For 75 minutes we were outstanding. Clearly the better side and played in all the areas we needed to play. We created moments.

"But we go 1-0 up and... Argh. Then the game opens up, let me say it like this! We lost the rhythm. That's a problem in football so you have to hold it from the beginning.

"I think for Tyrone Mings it was not easy to avoid the situation [for Liverpool's penalty] so that's it. The one with Andy Robertson I thought was a clear penalty at the time but I have not seen it back. I don't know if it was a clear penalty or not.

"[Steven Gerrard] is obviously a good coach. It is really strange when you meet before the game. A lot of the coaching staff from your own club is strange. They do what they do and everything is okay."

Ralf Rangnick couldn't have asked for a kinder run of fixtures to open his spell as Manchester United boss, and after last week's win over Crystal Palace, his first away game is at bottom of the table Norwich.

United's record against Norwich is a good one, with 20 wins in their past 24 meetings, including 11 of their past 13 visits to Carrow Road.

Things are rarely that simple though. In fact, the Red Devils have failed to win their past four Premier League games against promoted sides.

And after an English league record 29 consecutive away games without defeat, they have now lost two of their past four.

Rangnick says it will be a challenge to play at Carrow Road, but everyone should be fit and firing on Saturday after the German made 11 changes against Young Boys in the Champions League.

There's no reason not to expect United to be high intensity and high pressing from the off.

  6. 'We dominated from the start'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Southampton

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard to Match of the Day: "We dominated from the start, it was a little shaky in the beginning, we lost the ball in some stupid areas, but the second half was brilliant and we deserved the win."

On the first goal: "It was a brilliant goal, played out from the back, we’ve been practicing this movement, it’s good to see that it played out well. We practice these things every day in training. We saw that it world in a game, it’s a good feeling.

"We’ve been doing these things for a long time, we just need to be more clinical in the box, to finish better – if we can manage that then it will be good."

  7. 'Last-minute goal was amazing'published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Chelsea 3-2 Leeds

    Chelsea

Chelsea midfield Jorginho: "It was very important to have these three points. We had a tough game, Leeds are a tough opponent but we deserved the win. The last-minute goal was just amazing. The whole stadium felt so good."

"We can always give more. If you gave an extra 10% today we can improve again. We always need to want to improve to do more."

On playing with a back injury: "My back is not in the best condition, but [sometimes] you need to push yourself more to help the team. That's what I needed to do. It's hard, but I pushed to help my team."

Norwich boss Dean Smith has already beaten Manchester United once in the Premier League this season, winning 1-0 with Aston Villa in September.

He could become the first manager since Andy Aitken in 1908-09 to beat United with two different clubs in the same top-flight season – Aitken won 5-0 with Middlesbrough and 3-2 with Leicester that season.

  9. 'He will always be welcome'published at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk on the reception given to Steven Gerrard to BBC: "Yeah, deserved. He is Liverpool throughout. If you think about Liverpool, you think about Stevie G. He is a legend and always will be. He will always be welcomed here. It was emotional for him I don't think he can deny it. It was good to see him back."

  10. 'We have to step up'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl told Sky Sports: "I think the signs before the game weren't the best with players out with injuries.

"We tried in the beginning to be brave and play well. We concede in the first 15 minutes with their first chance. You could see the quality they had.

"We tried to score in the second half. But you can see the confidence they had after a second goal and a third goal.

"Overall there was nothing to get for us today.

"I think the first goal was an easy goal how we conceded it. The other two were from headers. In the end it was absolutely a deserved win for Arsenal. We have to pick up the points somewhere else."

On injuries: "We have a big squad but it's getting thinner. This is something we must look at. The season is tough and now comes the intense time.

"We have to step up again. We play on Wednesday against Crystal Palace. We have to show a better performance."

This is Ralf Rangnick’s first away league match in charge of Manchester United – none of the previous four permanent Man Utd managers have lost their first league game on the road.

    The last to do so?

Sir Alex Ferguson (2-0 at Oxford United in November 1986).

  13. 'The boss will be delighted'published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Southampton

    Arsenal

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka: "I’m really happy. The past few games haven’t been the best for us, we’ve lost a few, it’s good to bounce back in front of our fans."

On the first goal: "That’s what we’re trained to do, the boss will be delighted. We need to do more of that."

On the message at half-time: "We had to go and push and get the third, not just sit back soak up pressure. I think we showed that we’re capable of that. I hit the post, but the goals will come – I know they’ll come.

"It’s a solid performance, we didn’t play our best, especially on the first half, we lost it so many times, it was sloppy. But we managed to get the two goals and control the rest of the game. It was solid from us."

  14. 'We deserved the win'published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk: "I enjoy every game that I play. It was always going to be a tough game. We knew we'd have to be patient and fight for every ball. That's the least you have to do against this team. They created some moments of danger but not many big chances I feel right now. I think we deserved the win.

"It's always a good feeling when it hits the back of the net. I think we should have done better even after getting the goal to keep the ball and play through them. We didn't do it too well. But it's 1-0 and a clean sheet so we can't be too hard on ourselves."

On Villa's penalty shout: "I remember the moment but I have no idea if it will be a penalty. There are so many cameras and they didn't give a penalty."

On title race: "I don't know. That's something we shouldn't talk about. We focus on the game ahead of us and Villa was a tough game. We got the three points and that's all that matters. The season is long. So many twists and turns to go. The three teams are going quite well at the moment but the season is long."

So by all accounts, Man City and Chelsea get dodgy penalties and Villa get denied what sounds like a dead cert at Liverpool. One rule for the top teams...

There's the old cliche that the title winners are the ones that scrape to a win when not playing particularly well, perhaps via a tightly fought one goal victory won by a penalty. But what do we do when all three challengers are doing it!
