Newcastle's past three league victories have come against sides in the relegation zone.

They ended last season with victories against already relegated Sheffield United and Fulham, then beat 18th-placed Burnley last Saturday.

The last time they beat a side outside of the bottom three was May's 4-2 win at Leicester...

  2. 'Benitez would take a draw'published at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Everton got a great result against Arsenal on Monday, and the way they got it - so late on and with such a good strike - will have lifted the whole club.

Crystal Palace have taken only one point from their past four games, including three defeats in row.

But two of those losses came after they conceded late on, and even against Manchester United last week they missed a really good chance with the score at 0-0.

So the Eagles will be competitive, especially at home where they have only lost once under Patrick Vieira all season.

But I just don't see Everton boss Rafael Benitez taking many risks here, because it would be such a big backwards step to lose this game after that win over the Gunners.

Benitez will be absolutely determined not to be beaten, and I think he would take a draw now.

    Prediction: 1-1

  3. 'Technology supposed to aid decisions'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

We were supposed to get rid of those decisions where players were buying penalties. We have seen it for years and the big teams get the benefit of the doubt on big decisions. The smaller teams don’t get them.

The technology was supposed to remove it but there were a lot of decisions on Saturday that were not penalties. We have seen it far too much this weekend already.

  4. A few concerns at Leicester?published at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

Leicester have been shipping a few goals of late.

They have conceded at least twice in each of their past five Premier League games at the King Power.

Brendan Rodgers' side have also failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 of their 15 games in the Premier League this season.

Their only clean sheet came against Wolves on 14 August.

If Leicester lose today, it will be the first time in the club's history they lose nine top-flight home games in a calendar year.

  6. 'Tielemans is a top player'published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    Leicester v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers to Sky Sports: "The season as a whole has been a challenge with the number of players out and the challenge of European football. It has been difficult. It's a new challenge for us.

"If you look at our record over the last couple of seasons we've had a +26 and +18 goal difference - that tells you we've been fundamentally defensively strong. It's been a big challenge and with limited coaching time it makes it more difficult.

"Steve Bruce was unfortunate to lose his job, a good guy who was doing the best with the resources he had. Eddie Howe has come in and you can see the differences he's tried to bring to the team. We need to be really good to get the result."

On whether Hamza Choudhury joins the illness list: "He joins the group of players who are unavailable to us."

On Youri Tielemans' return: "It's huge, a top player. To have had him out for a few weeks... He's a big talent. His view of the game really helps other players as well."

  7. Head-to-head statspublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

Crystal Palace are winless in the past 13 Premier League meetings.

Everton's run of 10 league games unbeaten at Selhurst Park is a tally bettered just twice at any away ground in their top-flight history: 11 matches at Preston between 1897 and 1911, and 15 at Liverpool between 1899 and 1914.

Palace's solitary Premier League win in 12 attempts at home to Everton came in 1994. They've scored six goals in total during that run.

  8. 'Can't be isolated moment'published at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    Leicester v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "We desperately needed that win [against Burnley] and winning lifts you instantly.

"We've had a really good week and hopefully that shows in our performance.

"It can't be an isolated moment. I think we have to have the same motivation levels and desire to win.

"Leicester are full of top-quality players and with a top manager. but we're learning very quickly if we perform to our top levels, we can compete."

  9. 'Aubameyang should explain behaviour'published at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    Arsenal 3-0 Southampton

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you put everything together around Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he has showed his displeasure publicly, he has gone AWOL or whatever he has done, you cannot have him as the Arsenal captain.

Mikel Arteta can't have that sort of challenge to his authority, it is perhaps Aubameyang who should be put in front of a camera to explain his behaviour.

  10. What can we expect?published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

Burnley v West Ham (14:00 GMT)

Both of these teams are fighting for different things.

Hosts Burnley are looking to avoid relegation. West Ham are pushing for Champions League qualification.

Burnley need to start moving away from the drop - they are currently third bottom - but their only league win in the past 16 at Turf Moor came against Brentford in October.

They have dropped an unrivalled 14 points from winning positions too which won't have helped.

West Ham got off to a flying start - their joint-best in a Premier League season - but have suffered successive away defeats.

They are a threat late on though, so Burnley need to be wary, as only Liverpool have scored more second-half goals this season than West Ham.

    Leicester XIImage source, BBC Sport

Top scorer Jamie Vardy once again starts on the bench for Leicester City, just as he did in his side's 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa their last Premier League outing.

The 34-year-old played the entire match as the Foxes were beaten 3-2 and subsequently knocked out of the Europa League by Napoli on Thursday, meaning £22m summer signing Patson Daka is handed successive league starts for the first time.

Youri Tielemans also starts after returning from injury in midweek, with Ademola Lookman missing out as an illness-hit Leicester name three players without a senior appearance on the bench.

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Castagne, Evans, Soyuncu, Thomas, Dewsbury-Hall, Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Daka.

Subs: Ward, Bertrand, Vardy, Albrighton, Pereira, Soumare, Nelson, McAteer, Brunt.

So Jamie Vardy is on the bench for Leicester today.

He has been directly involved in 25 goals in his last 18 Premier League appearances against sides starting the day in the relegation zone, scoring 18 and assisting seven.

Vardy also needs one Premier League goal to surpass Ian Wright's record of 93 after his 30th birthday.

  14. 'They rode their luck'published at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    Leicester v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Like Tottenham, Leicester have had a number of positive Covid-19 tests in their squad.

Newcastle will be on a high after finally getting their first win of the season last week but they rode their luck against Burnley and they still have big problems at the back.

If Leicester are anywhere near full strength, they will find a way through.
