  3. 'Flat first half cost us'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was flat - the first half. The level on the ball was bad. We gave it away too many times. The first five or 10 minutes was quite good but then they got on top of the game and the crucial moment of the game was where they scored a little bit out of nothing. After that we were not staying in the game and then a brilliant finish by Neal.

"We stepped up in the second half but not massively. If you look at it overall if we took our chances a draw would have been a fair result but overall we didn't take our chances.

"It is definitely a fair opening [return of 20 points] and I think we could have had more points. It is disappointing when on the day you are facing a team you think you can get more out of it but we didn't."

  4. 'Important to get the three points'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Graham Potter, speaking to BBC Sport: "It has been a long time [since our last win] and we had to answer those statistics. You need to win and today it was important to get those three points.

"We started a little slow which you can understand when we've been on the run we have but as the first half went on we settled into the game. Delighted with the three points.

"Second half we had to use our goalkeeper, who made some fantastic saves, and a little bit of luck sees us a clean sheet which are important in the Premier League.

"No-one gives you anything in this league, you have to fight for it. Overall, delighted with the boys.

"We are trying to develop. It is not easy but we are trying that. We will continue to work. To get those points is a good return for us and we need to keep working.

"Fantastic [fans who were able to get to the game]. There was an effort get here. They were fantastic tonight and really helped us."

  5. 'They took their chances'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought Brighton were better than us in the first half and we were better than them in the second half but they took their chances.

"We were not sharp on touches, decision making and passes. We had the ball, kicked it away and 15 seconds later it was in the back of the net and we need to do better in those situations. I have to admit the second goal was a great goal by Neal Maupay.

"Second half better, chances that would have made the game interesting but in the end we didn't have the cutting edge.

"I knew we couldn't play that badly again [in the second half] and we didn't. A lot of effort but again lack of that cutting edge.

"In general we did not do enough to have a chance to win. It was clear he [Ivan Toney] was not at his best today but a lot of players were not at their best today.

"We have been fine the whole season but it is tough when we get these injuries to some of our key players. It is what it is and we need to get on with it."

  6. 'The result was important'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Graham Potter, speaking to Sky Sports: "First half especially I thought we were really good. Nice to score two goals and keep a clean sheet. We needed our goalkeeper in the second half as Brentford, as you expect, would respond.

"Sometimes you say the performance is important, today the result was important. We tried to press high against a team that has good organisation. Delighted with the three points.

"Pleasing for Neal, that is seven I think for the season so he is contributing. I can't say we didn't have a bit of luck, you need that in the Premier League, overall pleased with the boys and the crowd, took a lot of effort to get here tonight. Delighted with the three points."

  7. 'A game of two halves'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brentford

Brighton defender Pontus Jansson, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a game of two halves. First half we were nowhere near as good as we need to be to compete against a team like Brighton.

"We had a good feeling before the game but when you perform like we did in the first half it would be tough. The confidence we showed in the first half, like we had nothing to lose, we needed to show that in the first half."

  8. 'A big win'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    FT: Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton striker Neal Maupay, speaking to Sky Sports: "Such a big win for us.

"We hadn’t won for such a long, long time. Everyone was talking about it. This was a really good performance from the team. Recently we haven’t won but we were playing every game like we were going to win. Football is hard, it was never going to be easy. We pushed a lot and never gave up. We have some injuries, it is a tough time for everyone but we are working hard and believe in ourselves.

“It was just good to get a win and get a goal again. I needed that. It is not any nicer to score against my former club. I didn’t want to celebrate because they are the club that gave me a chance four years ago. No-one wanted to sign me in France, they were basically the only one who gave me the chance. It is a great club.

"When you don't win in a while people start talking and it starts putting a bit of pressure on. This is a good night for us."

  10. 'Brighton are a well structured side'published at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

    Brighton 2-0 Brentford

    Scott Minto
Former Chelsea and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Brighton do deserve this - they have been by far and away the better side. They know how to hunt in packs, they have a really good coach who plays good, progressive, watchable football.

If a Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea player had scored those two goals you would be saying they were world class goals. But it's not just about the goals it's the way they play with the ball, the little intricate passes or they can go a bit longer. Positionally with and without the ball they are a very well structured side.

This is just about killing the game now for Brighton - making sure Brentford have no chance to counter-attack and try to control the pace of the game.

I think Adam Lallana must've been taken off from a fitness point of view because from a technical point of view you want him in there. He's the one who can control the pace of the game, he's probably the best player on the pitch at it.

Thomas Frank will be pleased with Brentford's second-half response but those two first-half goals are looking increasingly likely to have been too damaging for his side.

They are still plugging away but time is rapidly running out.
