    Crystal Palace 0-0 West Ham

David Moyes has today moved level alongside Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger (all 10) as the manager to take charge of the most New Year's Day Premier League matches.

Moyes won all five league away fixtures as a manager versus Palace. Those five victories were in charge of five different clubs: Preston North End, Everton, Man United, Sunderland and West Ham.

The team that has opened the scoring in this fixture has failed to win on each of the last nine occasions. Probably a good job Palace didn't score there then.

Oh, it's going to be like that is it?!

Palace work their way down the left and a deflected cross is sent back in by Jordan Ayew for Jeffrey Schlupp to hook a shot on to the far post.

    He should have scored.

Mark Lawrenson takes on singer and guitarist with London band KAWALA and West Ham fan Dan McCarthy in the latest round of Premier League predictions.

    Lawro's prediction: 1-1

Both these sides enjoyed comfortable wins last time out, but West Ham probably needed theirs more because they had started to look a bit leggy.

This should be a good game, because Crystal Palace will think they can get at the Hammers, and vice versa. I think it's going to be close, which is why I am going for a draw.

    Dan's prediction: 2-2

    • Crystal Palace have won just one of their 10 top-flight matches played on New Year’s Day (drawn five; lost four), beating Notts County back in 1992.
    • West Ham won on New Year’s Day in 2020 (4-0 v Bournemouth) and 2021 (1-0 v Everton) – they’ve never won three consecutive league games on 1 January before.
    • Palace forward Odsonne Édouard has been involved in four goals in his last three Premier League games (one goal, three assists), one more than he had in his first 13 in the competition combined (three goals).
    • Declan Rice will become the 17th different player to reach 150 Premier League appearances for West Ham should he feature against Palace. At 22 years and 352 days on the day of this game, he’ll be almost three years younger than the previous youngest player to reach the milestone for the Hammers (Mark Noble in 2013, 25y 267d).

New Year's Day will mark exactly two years since David Moyes stood on the touchline to start his second spell in charge of West Ham.

The Hammers were in 17th place, one point off the relegation zone after losing four games on the spin, when Moyes took over from Manuel Pellegrini.

Now sitting fifth and competing in Europe, Moyes says he's "only at the start of the journey".

"I felt I could bring to West Ham an idea of how you build a football club and grow it. I think for us to try and remain consistent - finishing certainly in the top half of the league - would be a step in the right direction," he said.

"What makes me most happy is I think there are people talking about the club more than they have in the past. That's mainly down to the players - the young players, the players we've brought in - and we have more international players than we've had in my time at West Ham.

"I'm learning all the time and trying to get better at what I do. I want to try and improve the style but ultimately the big thing I want to do is try and win as many games as I can.

"If you stand still, you'll fall back and we've got a support who are enjoying watching the team, which means you're probably doing something right."

On-loan Chelsea forward Conor Gallagher scored the first two goals of new Palace boss Patrick Vieira's reign as the Eagles twice came from behind to hold the Hammers to an entertaining 2-2 draw.

West Ham, buoyed by impressive wins over Newcastle and Leicester, looked set to maintain their 100% start to the season when Pablo Fornals played a one-two with Michail Antonio to put the visitors ahead.

But Gallagher fired Palace level - and did so again after the Hammers had regained the advantage through in-form Antonio's fourth goal in three games.

West Ham remained top of the table on goal difference, while Gallagher's goals were the first two of six he has netted in a Palace shirt during his impressive loan spell.

  11. Simplicity recipe for Hammers' success - Williamspublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

Crystal Palace v West Ham (17:30 GMT)

Simplicity has been genius when it comes to the turnaround in West Ham’s fortunes overseen by manager David Moyes in his two years in charge, says former Wales defender Ashley Williams.

Moyes celebrates the two-year anniversary of his appointment for a second spell in charge of the Hammers on Thursday, with his side sitting fifth in the Premier League table after a 4-1 win at Watford.

“His style complements the players he’s got there and it’s very humble and simple. Nowadays we can get caught up in all these different formations and everyone’s trying to copy the next manager,” Williams said on the Football Daily podcast.

“David Moyes has said he’s going to play his formation, his style, no matter who they are playing against – it doesn’t really differ whether they are playing Norwich or Manchester City.

“If you’re a manager playing West Ham at the minute, you know exactly what you are coming up against but stopping it is another thing. He doesn’t confuse it and keeps everything simple.

“They had a good season last season and everyone, including myself, was thinking how long can they keep this going? But they’ve started this season exactly the same - we’re now halfway through and they’re doing really well again.”

Palace will be looking to end an unwanted New Year's Day record today. They are winless in all five Premier League matches (W0-D3-L2) to take place on the first day of the year. Only Bolton Wanderers (6, W0-D2-L4) have played as many New Year's Day PL games without ever winning.

Palace are unbeaten in all 13 New Year's Day league home fixtures (W7-D6-L0).

The biggest Premier League defeat on New Year's Day was West Ham's 6-0 loss at Reading in 2007.

Watford defender Craig Cathcart on Sky Sports: "It is difficult to concede that late on, I felt like we would have had a clean sheet, all through the game we felt comfortable.

"We have been leaking goals so we needed to regroup and we did that, we had a couple of chances here and there to nick a goal."

  16. 'We controlled it for sure'published at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte to Sky Sports: "We scored at the end but I think we tried and tried for the whole game. In this type of game you have to be intelligent to attack in the best ways and pay attention not to lose the balance. They are very dangerous on the counter-attack and are strong physically, as well as fast. I think we played a good game and controlled it for sure. When we arrive at the last pass sometimes we have to improve to score.

"It was difficult because we didn't score but created chances and when you find an opponent who is well organised it is not simple. But when you score the game changes and you find spaces to attack. I am happy with the commitment and effort from the players. We were a bit tired but I wish the world to my friend Claudio Ranieri the best because they deserve something.

"It is important to get three points. We know we have to suffer to get points. We are building a team to try to be competitive in the future but we know we have to be competitive in this season too. It is important to be humble, to fight and to suffer. I think everything can improve."

On the stoppage in play to attend a crowd member: "I think the most important thing is the safety of the crowd. Then there is the game and football. It was good to stop and especially now this person is good and it was OK."

  17. Build the team around Rice?published at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

Crystal Palace v West Ham (17:30 GMT)

West Ham manager David Moyes says he wants to build his team around England midfielder Declan Rice.

Rice, 22, plays his 150th Premier League game for the Hammers at Crystal Palace tonight.

This season Rice has built on his Euro 2020 performances, attracting England's leading clubs, but his contract runs to 2024, with the option of another year.

"Declan's under a long contract so from that point of view we've not got a big panic on," said Moyes.

"We've no intention of selling him and I've said already many, many times, if we ever had to, it would be a shoot to the moon.

"My job is to keep building the club and the level up. We need players around Declan who are at a similar level. He has been a revelation for us this season and hopefully he keeps driving the team on."

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs goalscorer Davinson Sanchez, speaking to Sky Sports: "The goal, that was what we were looking for, not just myself, the fans, the team, the result we are happy for. I am happy to be here the way we are doing.

"It was very physical coming to play here, they always make it hard to play against, but we had intention from the beginning to keep pushing for a result.

"If we opened the game earlier it would become a different game. Crystal Palace, second half we created many chances but a bit unlucky in the final third, Southampton before the goal we missed the last pass. Finally we got it, we are working very well to keep pushing."

On the medical incident in the crowd that led to a long delay before the goal: "Hopefully they solved the problem and the person is healthy and recovering with their family."

There was a telling, passionate embrace between Spurs’ defenders at the full-time whistle. Obviously one of their band of brothers has won the game, and they’ve kept another clean sheet, but it had the feel of a team that fully believe.

No doubting it now. Tottenham have to be talked about as a Champions League contender.
