  2. 'A strange win'published at 20:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a strange win because we didn't play so well. At the time we are at and the games we have played I don't think everybody is playing so well all the time. You might have it for spells. It is hard to control the game for 90 minutes. We had opportunities in the first half when we got our goals but Crystal Palace played really well. They had opportunities.

"The first two were good goals and really important for us as it gave us a platform. We didn't start well. Probably even more important was the VAR decision for the penalty. I thought the ref was really close to it and didn't give a handball so I assumed it wasn't handball. If it is that close you expect him to give it. Maybe they are now waiting on VAR giving that call. But we have had things not go our way and this time it has.

"We have lost Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma so we are churning them out and playing our centre-backs week in, week out. But they stuck to their task. I'm not happy with the goals we conceded late on. For most of the half we dealt with most things.

"I always thought we'd win games but in the Premier League you are always entitled to a little lull now and again. It happens to all the team. It is really difficult to keep standards, all the levels up. I'm glad we ae over it and we got three points today."

  3. Olise shines for Palacepublished at 20:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

Even in defeat, there were plenty of positives for Palace to take from that game, including the cameo from Michael Olise.

The midfielder arrived with a big reputation, having excelled in the Championship. He has now been directly involved in five Premier League goals this season as a substitute (2 goals, 3 assists), the most of any player. He’s the first Crystal Palace player to score and assist from the bench in the Premier League.

  4. 'I'm disappointed with how my team was treated'published at 20:24 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira speaking to BBC Match of the Day on the result: "It was the performance of the referee. I was really disappointed with the way the team has been treated on the field today."

On forward Jordan Ayew's performance: "This is Jordan. He has been working really hard, really well and he starts scoring goals and creating chances.

"Overall we had a really good performance. We played a team fifth in the table and gave a really good performance.

"We have to learn from the mistakes we are making and score goals when we are creating those chances."

On whether the absent Wilfried Zaha will play at the Africa Cup of Nations: "I have no comment on that."

All of today's games had the "wrong" result, based on the balance of play. While you can blame complacency and lack of clinical finishing, nobody can be using these as an excuse to disguise the horrible influence of dreadful refereeing, applications of laws, and inconsistent use of VAR that is rampant. If it wasn't a problem we wouldn't be talking about it. You can say that it's fans of certain teams complaining but that's only today; over the season everybody has been screwed by the inconsistency and shoddy application and you can't brush it off as "evening it out" unless you're simply in denial of the problems.

  6. 'We didn't play well'published at 20:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports: "Really pleased with the result after a difficult week or two for us as far as games and injuries go. Thrilled with the win.

"We didn't play well but we scored three goals and that is what we are capable of. It was only two teams that have scored more goals in the year.

"Really good goal. He [Manuel Lanzini] is capable of that. We have seen one or two at different times. He is doing really well for us at the moment. We got the goals at important times for us. Even the penalty kick was really important.

"You saw quality from Crystal Palace. They started better then us and had lots of opportunities. But we were a bit more clinical.

"It has been a tough schedule for the boys and staff. We have rallied after losing to Southampton. We have won two away games and that isn't easy. Well done to the players."

  7. 'We were the better team but naive'published at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is really difficult because we played some good football and created a lot of chances to win the game. We are disappointed because I think we were the better team. But the difference between the two sides is that they have been building for a few years now. This is a mature team. The experience allowed them to win. At times we were naive. We were also unlucky. We had the best first chances and hit the post. We have to learn and improve. To play well is not enough to win football matches.

"You have to give them credit. When they had the chances, they took them. We had a couple we did not take. We are learning in a hard way. Conceding those two goals... with more maturity we handle the game in a different way. We will learn. We should at least get a point today.

"It is the character of the team. We lack experience but what we have is players who look like our fans, who believe to the final minute. We were close but West Ham will be very happy with the win."

On the penalty: "It is a referee decision. From where I was it is difficult to see at first. I have had chance to see it after and I think it is a penalty."

On speaking to the referee at the end of both halves: "That is something between me and the referee. I get booked for it and I will accept that."

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Very tough. If you look at the game in the first half we were lucky to be in 3-0 because they had great chances. We sat back and gave away two sloppy goals."

On Said Benrahma's assist for Michail Antonio: "Amazing ball. He does that all the time in training it's just about consistency. I'm buzzing for him to get the assist. He's a player who needs confidence to perform. You need to make him feel like he's the best player. In training you always see glimpses."

On Manuel Lanzini's first goal: "It was a great finish. He's a special, special player. Anyone else in the team probably wouldn't have been able to manoeuvre it that quick. I'm delighted for him."

On a tough schedule: "Yes definitely. The schedule we've had has been crazy. At Selhurst Park with the fans behind the gaol they can almost suck a goal in. In the end we stood strong and got the three points that we wanted.

On top four: "I think we can. It's a mentality thing for us. If it stays 3-0 it's a great victory and that's the things that need to change."

West Ham are the fourth team to win a New Year's Day Premier League match in three consecutive seasons, after Man City (2013-2015), Spurs (2013-2015) and Leicester (2018-2020).

Palace (W0-D3-L3) move level alongside Bolton Wanderers (W0-D2-L4) as the team to play the most New Year's Day Premier League matches without ever winning.

This is Palace's first league home defeat on New Year's Day (W7-D6-L1).

  10. 'We should win this game easy'published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen speaking to Sky Sports: "We've played West Ham two times now and both times we have dominated them. I think we should win this game easy. They had two chances and a penalty which isn't a penalty. We should win this game.

"Maybe we should have scored a bit earlier. We scored late which makes it difficult but we had a chance to make it 3-3."

On West Ham's penalty: "For me his [Luka Milivojevic's] arm is close to his body so it isn't a penalty. It's obvious it isn't a penalty.

"We had so many chances in the first half and that gave us the hope. We spoke at half-time that we will create the chances we just had to take them. The penalty made it difficult at 3-0 before half-time. It's a tough one to take."

If that wasn't a back pass from Dawson, I'd very much like someone to explain what the player was attending to achieve there? Seriously, what else was he trying to do with the ball in that position? Shocking officiating is too rampant in this country now, ironically I think Michael Oliver is the only decent ref.

  12. 'Benrahma assist was a striker's dream'published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

FT: Crystal Palace 2-3 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham forward Michail Antonio speaking to Sky Sports: "To be fair this season Crystal Palace are playing unbelievable football. The way their gaffer has them playing is quality.

"All game they were after us but when opportunities dropped for us we took them. They managed to get two and we had to hold out. You saw the pressure they put us under but we managed to hold out and it's three points to start the year.

"It shows our resilience. They hit the post early and we came back and scored two goals, then we added a third."

On Said Benrahma's cross for his goal: "Striker's dream. Unbelievable. I just had to get a touch on it. I wish I had those every week."

On Manuel Lanzini: "They call him the jewel here, he's magic. He is showing his quality again and we are happy we have the jewel back."

On what 2022 has in store after a good 2021 for West Ham: "It's going to be better. The only way is to put more points on the board."

Palace will likely reflect on this and wonder just how they managed to take nothing from it.

They had 22 efforts on goal to West Ham's 10. They were the better side for much of it. But sloppiness at both ends at crucial moments cost them.
