    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders, speaking to BBC radio 5 Live: "It’s never boring with us, eh? Never. We’re really proud of the boys because they made a proper football match. We could have made a lot of excuses but we didn’t, we attacked the game.

"It was not easy – Chelsea really tried to use the spaces we left, sometimes we couldn’t deal with that.

"What I would loved to have seen more was more control. The moments we were quick in mind and were really connected, switched side, when we used the space they left, we were lethal.

"Coming here in the situation we’re in, it’s a really good point. Our fans identified with the way we played, which is good for us. We take the point and we go forward to the next game.

"It was an even game so I think a draw is the correct result. You know against Chelsea you have to work hard, you have to suffer, I think they boys deserve a big compliment for the way they defended – all of them. Our front three were incredible in terms of their attitude."

    Liverpool

Pep Lijnders on whether Jurgen Klopp will be in the dugout for Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal:

"No, he can’t because of quarantine rules. He has mild symptoms. But Jurgen is a very optimistic, positive leader, he's our leader, our boss. I just hope it stays mild symptoms and that he’s back quick with us."

  6. 'We make it a final'published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders, speaking to Match of the Day: "Never boring with us I think and I just want to pay the team a big compliment, because we could make a lot of excuses, our manager was not present today or yesterday, but the team played really well. We attacked the match day really well. We would have loved to see more control, but for the fans, public at home, it was an entertaining game.

"It is a long season, we don't approach the game like this, we make it a final and this is how we collect all the points since we have been here. We analyse, this is how we evolve, develop how we became the team we are now, the next game comes quickly.

"It was clear what we needed to improve tactically, that's what we gave the boys at half-time, we had good chances, good saves, we could have even won. In these games you never know."

On Jurgen Klopp: "I spoke with him at half-time quickly, he is our leader, our motivator, our boss and it is good - he is the type of guy who gives a lot of responsibility, a lot of freedom."

On Mo Salah and Sadio Mane: "I spoke with all the boys in the locker room, wished them all the best, they have earned this right as one of the better players in the Afcon, it is an incredible tournament and they should be able to fight for each prize."

  7. 'We can still improve'published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to BBC Sport: “You can win it anytime if you still believe and I am happy with the attitude and the quality we showed. We can still improve, we still struggled because of injuries and changes we had to make but we don’t want to be greedy. I am happy with my team."

Will Romelu Lukaku come back in contention for next games? “Let’s see. We will decide it tomorrow, have a meeting from there and inform you."

  8. 'It is hard to swallow'published at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Sport: “What can we do? We fight for the win. We struggled to win the games that can be on our side, today there are no regrets. It was a brilliant match of football. We started very well and were then 2-0 down from individual mistakes that get punished at this level.

“We turned it around, we were close to winning it but it was on the edge and could have gone either way. We continue."

On Sadio Mane's early booking: "In the first game we got the red card and the referee was so quick to give the red card. They did not check it, I hate to say it normally as I don’t like a red card early in the game, it can kill it. The public are here to see 11v11. Sadio Mane should always be on the pitch because he is a brilliant player and a good guy but it is a red card. If you don’t check and then can check our goal and maybe take it away… it is hard to swallow but what can we do?"

  9. 'It is a red card'published at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to Sky Sports: "Brilliant match of football, everybody not in the stadium missed something - energy, some mistakes. We started excellent and were 1-0 down out of nothing because we did two or three big mistakes, then we concede a second one which makes the task very hard.

"The team did not give in and Mateo Kovacic's goal brought the belief back into the stadium. There was almost the perfect comeback in the first half with a third goal on the transition."

On Sadio Mane's potential red card: "If you remember the first game with the same referee and how quick it was to give a red card to us, I am not a friend of early red cards. I hate to say it because I love Mane and he is a nice guy and top player, but it is a red card. The elbow is in the face - it doesn't matter if you do this after 20 seconds or 20 minutes. We come from a game against Brighton where we miss VAR calls in the box and suddenly VAR is checking a goal against Kovacic.

"It would be nice to also check from outside to have substitutes and bring more energy, but at the moment it's like putting [Cesar Azpilicueta] in a new position, and Christian Pulisic at wing-back because of an injury to Trevoh Chalobah. I get the feeling we start with a back three and never end with the same back three.

"Nice goals, no? The first one was absolutely brilliant but also the second was difficult. To coach was high level and it was on the edge, it could have gone either way. A good Sunday afternoon and new year."

On Romleu Lukaku: "He is our player, there is always a way back, we will clear this behind closed doors and once we have made a decision and Romelu knows, you will maybe know also. It is not to be discussed now."

Ben: The title is far from over, yes its City's to lose, but we're just halfway through the season.

  11. 'No point giving up'published at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was an intense game, end-to-end. Great quality all over the pitch with a fantastic opponent.

"You don’t want to concede at all, the first goal was a fantastic strike, you can't say much about that finish, I have top give [Mateo Kovacic] credit for it.

"We had to dig deep, especially in the second half they had possession. [Edouard] Mendy had a fantastic game, too. It was an intense game for both sides and I think maybe a draw is the right result."

On Mohamed Salah: "Fantastic footballer, we will miss him now obviously, but we wish him well in the Africa Cup of Nations, same to Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.

"Nothing is impossible, it’s a big gap. It’s football, anything can happen. There’s no point giving up."

  12. 'Frustrating not to get winner'published at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic, speaking to BBC Sport: "It feels like one of those games. It was an incredible first half, you feel after we got the momentum and get back 2-2 it is a bit frustrating not to get the winner but probably a fair result in the end.

"It was strange to be down 2-0. It felt like we were in the game and playing well and kept with it and scored two. It was an exciting game for sure."

On safe standing being used: "I've seen it from Germany a lot. I definitely think it could help the atmosphere. I didn't know today but the atmosphere was brilliant."

  13. 'Take a point and move on'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, speaking to Match of the Day: "It is a probably a good result for them (Manchester City) but for us there will be disappointment we didn't play as well as we liked.

"Chelsea are a good team and we gave it everything. We are disappointed with the two goals close to half time. The lads showed heart in defending and nearly got the reward towards the end on the counter attack.

"We can take positives as well. There was space on the counter attack when we won the ball back, we know what Mo, Sadio and Diogo can do in the final third and they punished them.

"Sometimes that can happen in football (two goals before half-time) - we reacted the right way in the second half, we dug in, defended well as a team and on another day we might have found a winner.

"Stamford Bridge is always a difficult point to come so we take a point and move on."

On whether there was an offside during Mateo Kovacic's goal: "We asked the question - I was asking if he could go and have a look and make a decision, it just looked like there were two or three around which could affect the keeper, but it was a fantastic finish."

On Sadio Mane's yellow card: "You know better than me. I was disappointed with the yellow card to be honest. Sadio is always going to try and win it. His eyes are always on the ball, I don't think there was intent there."

Ted: How on earth is Mane still on the pitch to score the first goal? Chelsea were the better team today and deserved the 3 points. With Lukaku or Hazard in the team, they might have done it. The best hope of any team catching Man City in the league = gone today.

  15. 'Never boring with us'published at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is never boring with us. Incredible intensity from the start with both teams. We would have wanted more control, we had so many good counter attacks but it was just missing the last pass.

"Overall, for the public it must have been an unbelievable game. I have to say, the situation we are in it is a big compliment for the team. We could have made a lot of excuses for today but our boys fought hard with all they heart they have.

"We want to approach each game like it is a final. In each game we play, whoever is wearing the shirt or on the bench, we are showing this character.

"It was good that game was 11 v 11. We are here to entertain and to win each time and as I said at the start of the interview it is never boring.

"We have many different weapons. They [Salah and Mane] are incredibly important because they give us face, they give direction in a game and they give us desire.

"I wish them all the best in the Africa Cup of Nations. Everyone knows how it feels to play for your country. They have the right to fight for each prize as it comes."

On Chelsea goals: "Two incredible goals. You always try to put organisation in place to stop these situations but two incredible goals."

  17. 'City's to lose at the moment'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports: "If you are 2-0 up you don't want to concede that close to half time, give them the momentum to get back into the game, it happened - a fantastic strike, you have to give him credit. That gives them momentum and they score the second.

"We tried not to panic and created fantastic moments even though we were under pressure.

"For the outside world it was qute a good game to watch, but we came here for three points and didn't get them. They have an amazing team, so have we. I have a feeling we were under pressure at times but defended well as a team, didn't give big chances away. I always had a feeling we could score for 3-2 but it didn't happen."

On goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher: "I am a big fan of him, he is a fantastic goalkeeper, he is learning from the best in my opinion in Alisson, his presence is good, he is confident on the ball - we need him right now with the Covid cases, unfortunately we conceded two."

On the title race: "Never difficult to believe, it is a big gap, they have the title maybe to lose at the moment but anything can happen still. We have been there and gave it away, so anything is possible. We focus on ourselves, we just have to get results, play good football and win games."

There have been four instances in the Premier League this season of a side failing to win a game in which they’ve led by two or more goals, with Liverpool accounting for two of those occasions (2-2 vs Brighton in October and today vs Chelsea).

There were just 245 seconds between Chelsea’s two first-half goals scored by Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic.

Sadio Mane received the earliest booking (15 seconds) on record in a Premier League game since 2006-07.

    Chelsea

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were 2-0 down, we fought hard to come back. We wanted more of course. We never lost the trust. We felt in the second half we could push for the third goal but we didn't score."

On Sadio Mane's early booking: "A clear red. I don't mind if it is five seconds into the game it is a red. I don't understand, we have had these kind of decisions the other day. It is a clear red card. We are getting these decisions against us and it can change the way of the game.

They would say what they think. We are promoting the challenges in the Premier League with 50-50 with the ball, sometimes we are seeing a joke of penalties and sometimes we see real dangerous challenges and we don't take action.

"We are seeing a few games where referees become a bit softer in terms of penalties and red cards and then it becomes opposite. We don't see the same consistency in the same game and same season. I watched the replay but I didn't need this because live I knew it was a red.

"We had to fight our way back. We left everything on the pitch but it was not enough.

"Both teams had their moments. When they were 2-0 up they think they have a clear chance to score a third and maybe that could kill the game but after that we played well."

Manchester City be happy with this result? "They are the ones at the top. The more points we are behind the happier they will be. They have been setting the standards really high. It was up to us to close the gap, we know they are a quality team, they have been playing together for a while.

"We are on our way but until now we didn't reach that level of consistency that would keep us at the top."
