ZS-NVB: Incredibly poor yet again. Zero passion, zero effort, zero desire. Rangnick needs to have a massive clearout in the summer. This has gone on long enough, the entire rotten club needs a reset.

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

Some 36% of Wolves’ Premier League goals against Manchester United have come from outside the box (4/11), the highest of all 31 teams to have scored at least 10 goals against them in the competition.

Mike Bell: Trials, academies, youth development, cross continents scouting. Millions and millions spent on it for decades. Despite that, you rock up for a Premier League match against Wolves with two almost middle aged blokes up front. And you lose.

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

None of Wolves’ last eight Premier League games have seen more than one goal scored (three 1-0 wins, three 0-0 draws and two 1-0 defeats).

Only Burnley (nine between April 2015 and August 2016) have had a longer such run in the competition.

  6. 'I knew it could and would be hard'published at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick, speaking to BBC Sport: "Very disappointed, like the players. We knew it could be a complicated game because the Wolves with a back five are very flexible in midfield. In the first half we were struggling. We had too many easy turnovers, too many unforced errors and too many giveaways. That didn't make the job any easier for us and that is why we changed to a back three. For 35 minutes we had more control and missed the chance to score the first goal. It was clear to me the team that scored the first goal would win the game.

"Today we showed similar problems the team had three or four weeks ago before I arrived. It is not an easy job to develop a DNA with and without the ball. The game today showed there are still quite a few steps to."

On Phil Jones: "There was no doubt at all regarding his attitude because I saw him training. If you consider hasn't played in two years it was a very good performance."

Make the top four? "I cannot make any guarantees. Look at today's performance if I say we are 100% convinced we will finish in the top four I don't know if people will believe that. For me it is about taking the next steps and getting better.

"I knew this could be and would hard but today's game showed we still have a long way to go."

  8. 'Jones was Man Utd's best player'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Phil Jones was the best player for Manchester United today. For all the stick he has been given over the last couple of years, apart from the goal - his header could have been better - but if you watch his all round performances, his positioning, clearances, his confidence he didn't look like he had been out all that long.

In terms of positives for United that was the only one I saw.

  9. 'Jones should be proud of himself'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    FT: Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw: "Not good enough, we really struggled, we couldn't get hold of the ball and when we didnt have the ball we weren't agressive enough. We didnt put them under any pressure.

"It maybe looked like an easy game for them. A disappointing performance and result. We didnt have many options on the ball and we weren't on the front foot.

"We have to put more pressure on them, we have to have intensity. Us players, we have been here a long time, maybe tonight we struggled, I didnt think we were all there together. You look at the players we have, we have unbelievable quality but sometimes quality is not enough.

"We need to bring the intensity and more motivation. Inside the dressing room, we know what we want but out on the pitch we need to give 100%. To win these types of games we all need to be 100% committed. It is tough and disappointing.

"One thing I will say is Phil Jones should be proud of himself. He has been criticised for years, and has gone through a lot, but he is so pfrssional and he has trained heard anmd he was phenomenal. He was exceptional, I am very happy for him and he deserves it."

  10. 'The fans have that feeling'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    FT: Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Bruno Lage to BBC Sport: "In the end we want to create these kind of feelings in our fans. After 90 minutes they have that feeling.

"We won here. It was a good game for us. From the first minute we had that feeling. We came here to win the game. The first half was very good from our side. I think it’s clear, a big performance from our side. A fantastic game from our boys.

“Goals are a problem but creating chances is not. People just look at stats and think we are defending. When we have the ball, we come here and how many chances did we create in the first half?

"After this, one more goal. Tomorrow is a day off but after that the players need to improve. The way we’re playing and creating chances, we need to score more goals.

“We come here with a big personality. Credit for my team. We come here with a big ambition.

“We are on 28 points and we go game by game.”

  11. 'Wolves were the best team we've played'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick to Sky Sports: "We didn’t play well at all individually or collectively. In the first half, we had big problems to keep them away from our goal.

"In the second half we changed to a back three and had more control then a spell of 15 minutes where we could have scored. The goal we conceded, we had enough players in the box. The cross had been defended by Jones but the goal we conceded was like too many this season.

"Moutinho could shoot unmarked with no problems, no pressure. We’re very disappointed about the result and parts of our performance.

“They’re playing with four or five central midfielders and we had problems to control that part of the pitch. We decided to change our formation and we had more control – they didn’t have as many chances – but we missed our chances and we have to admit they deserved to win.

“Wolves were the best team we’ve played. We have more problems today than in other games.

“We didn’t press at all. We tried but we were not able to get into those pressing situations. They had an overload in midfield and they played via their wing-backs. We’ve been only working two and a half or three weeks after needing to close the training centre. We had the results. In times we played well but today we have to admit they’re better than us."

On replacing Mason Greenwood with Bruno Fernandes: “It was 0-0. Bruno had a big chance to put us 1-0 ahead. Mason was good but I had to take someone off and didn’t want to take off one of the sixes. I had to decide whether to take off Edi or Mason so took off Mason.

“The game showed we still have a lot of work to do. We had too many unforced errors.

“I don’t want to speak about individual performances of players. It’s an issue of the whole team. It doesn’t make sense.

"We have to see each individual game. So far we had 10 out of 12 points. Today we had our first defeat against a good team. They don’t score that many goals, today they scored the only goal. Today the question was who will score the first goal.”

  12. 'Big problems at Man Utd'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are big problems at Manchester United. We knew the problems under Ole and they are trying to change the way they play but there are issues.

Some players run, some don't run and when you strip it all back that is a massive, massive problem for Manchester United.

Watching the game tonight and looking at Chelsea-Liverpool it was night and day the difference in quality.

  13. 'One more victory'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    FT: Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Bruno Lage talking to Sky Sports: "It is one more victory. Lovely stadium, a place with a lot of history but the most important thing is how we played.

"We played in our way, we controlled the first half and missed a lot of chances. We win three points, and have more chances than goals.

"We deserved the three points. Every time I am positive and try to win the games. This is football, they had one good chance for Bruno."

Richard Browne: Bringing Ronaldo back to United was by far the worst thing the club have done in years. Progress on hold.

The Soapbox: I'm beginning to think that Ralf Rangnick was not the brilliant tactician I thought he was.

Izzy Cool Guy: Losing a match when you playing well, missing chances, but playing with intensity is forgivable but losing the game like that. Playing like that. I mean, we are bad. We are awful. Truth be told and it hurts to see Man united falling apart like that.

  16. Postpublished at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

Manchester United have lost their opening league match in two of the last three calendar years, as many defeats as in the previous 23 years.

  17. 'Man Utd don't know what's needed of them'published at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Manchester United don't know what is needed of them. They were looking around at each other at times. They were playing slow when they needed to be fast forward. In the second half they had that bit more control but still, Wolves looked comfortable.

Apart from that save at the end, Jose Sa was not really tested as much as he should be.

Imran Rawat: Absolutely shocking performance. There is just no cohesion in this so called team. Solskjaer worked a miracle by the looks of things.

Joe Baker: Massive shout out to Phil Jones. Taken a lot of unfair slack, considering the physical and mental torment he's been through, but comes back after 2 years and is one of his team's best players.

Nathan: Manchester United are a mid-table side that play some of the worse football in the league. This is worrying times, Wolves beat that side with ease tonight. There’s players on that pitch simply incapable of useful performances.

  20. 'Winning here is amazing for us'published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2022

    Man Utd 0-1 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves' goalscorer Joao Moutinho to Sky Sports: "What I want is to help the team. Winning here at Old Trafford against a big team is amazing for us.

"We came here to play football, play with the ball, that's what we do. We created a lot of shots in the first half. They changed a little bit to three centre-backs like us. We controlled everything. We only let them create one opportunity on the bar.

"We deserved it because of what we did over 90 minutes. I hope we can continue with this performance.

"Phil Jones headed out the ball. I tried to see where it went. [After] my first touch I said I need to shoot. That's what I need to do, to shoot more. A beautful goal."
