Hardly been a classic so far. The sort of match that makes you contemplate making an early exit in order to beat the rush at full-time.

But what if you leave and miss the dramatic finale?

Any stories to share of when that tactic has backfired on you and you've missed a moment of magic?

Plenty of encouragement from the sidelines, but not much in the way of action.

Barnsley have come closest to a goal - Jasper Moon's looping header only narrowly over - while Lys Mousset has had two half-chances for Sheffield United.

You know it's been a low-key half when no time is added at the end of the 45 minutes!

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

Barnsley have built up a bit of a head of steam in these past five minutes.

They're pressing high and penning their opponents in.

Victor Adeboyejo gets on the end of Callum Styles' cross but it's a simple catch for Sheffield United keeper Robin Olsen.

  4. CLOSE!published at 41 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

And Barnsley respond with a half-chance of their own.

Victor Adeboyejo has looked lively at times - he puts a ball into the box, met by Jasper Moon, and the header drifts just over the bar.

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

    That's a bit better.

Iliman Ndiaye gets down the right for Sheffield United and his cross is met by Lys Mousset, but the strike lacks power and is easily stopped by Brad Collins.

  6. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

This game is severely lacking in quality.

I can't imagine Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic will be happy with what he's seen.

He has experienced strikers David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp on the bench, who've scored 194 career Championship goals between them, as well as £23.5m forward Rhian Brewster.

  7. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 29 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

The Sheffield United fans, and some players, ask for a penalty after a coming-together in the Barnsley box.

But it was more in hope than expectation and referee Gavin Ward isn't interested.

There's a feeling of now or never for Barnsley head coach Markus Schopp.

Many Tykes fans have been calling for a change in the dugout but the club are standing by him for now.

The hosts are doing OK here so far but there's definitely a lack of fluency going forward.

That sums this game up so far.

Callum Styles whips the ball in left-footed but there's far too much on it and it drifts straight out of play for a Sheffield United goal kick.

Jasper Moon has won Barnsley a free-kick in a central area, more than 30 yards out.

I imagine this will be floated into the box.

Neither keeper has been tested yet and both sides are struggling to keep hold of the ball.

It's not been particularly easy on the eye, but that's often how derby games pan out!

    JokanovicImage source, Rex Features

Sheffield United have won just four of their 13 Championship games after relegation from the Premier League last season.

Slavisa Jokanovic is trying to evolve the Blades' style of play but you feel the results will need to come at some point.

They've not started particularly well here.

  13. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

Victor Adeboyejo gets to the byline and pulls the ball across goal, but there's no Barnsley striker in the box to profit.

You feel the hosts need to back themselves a bit more in attack as they're getting into some promising areas.

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

To answer my previous sock question, Barnsley have teamed up with the Weston Park cancer charity for today's game - wearing purple socks to mark the occasion.

The Tykes did the same in their match against Reading last season.

  15. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

Barnsley pass nicely through midfield but Cauley Woodrow has no options to his left and the attack breaks down.

The Tykes are certainly lacking confidence in attack.

An early observation from a colleague.

Barnsley are wearing purple socks with their red shirts and white shorts - is that normal? Is there a reason for it?

As you can guess, not much to speak of on the pitch for now.

  17. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

At the other end Sheffield United have their first sight of goal.

Oli McBurnie flicks on a long ball and Lys Mousset is onto it, but he skews wide from around 18 yards out.

One of the stands at Oakwell is currently closed for safety reasons, which is a shame.

It's not stopping the Sheffield United fans, though, who are in great voice.

    Barnsley win an early corner.

  19. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Barnsley 0-0 Sheff Utd

    Off we go.

    It's fresh, it's windy and it's raucous.

Let's hope the early tempo lives up to it.

Barnsley v Sheff Utd (12:30 BST)

Barnsley won the last meeting between these sides in April 2018, Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie among the goals for the Tykes as they triumphed 3-2 under Jose Morais.

Victory for the hosts today would see them record consecutive league wins over the Blades for the first time since 1999.

Sheffield United themselves are stuttering down in 18th.

They've already lost 12 away league games in 2021, last losing more than that in a calendar year back in 2010.
