    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

That's all folks. Scotland turned in a stirring display at Hampden to make sure of a home draw when the World Cup play-offs get started in March.

We'll find out all of the teams involved tomorrow evening and the draw is on 26 November.

The dream is still alive and kicking...

  2. 'We're looking forward now'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

Scotland striker Che Adams capped his best display in a Scotland jersey with a brilliant goal.

"It's a great performance from everyone, I think we fully deserved the three points tonight. We're looking forward now, no looking back!" he announced while speaking to Sky Sports.

The second goal-scorer of the night added: "You know when the fans are here and everyone is here together, there is no telling on what we can do. We know what we are capable of and now we have to believe.

"You can tell from all the support, how much it means to everyone and all the lads in the dressing room, everyone is buzzing - bring on March!"

  3. 'We wanted to finish on a high'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

When asked about securing a home play-off match, Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said: "That was important for us. I took a little risk playing some of the boys who were on yellows but we wanted to win the game and finish the campaign on a high. We had the chance to win six competitive games in a row which is not easy to do, but the boys wanted to do it too, and they showed that on the pitch."

  4. 'The best story ever'published at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

Continuing his conversation with Sky Sports, Scotland head coach Steve Clarke highlighted goalscorer John Souttar saying: "The best story ever, I am so happy for him.

"He's had a horrendous time with injuries and for him to come back, even for John just to be in the squad, I know he was delighted to be back with us, to get the opportunity to play.

"And the way he played, not just the goal, to stretch the play with the ball, it is a great story."

  5. 'I'll start with a smile'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

A beaming Scotland head coach Steve Clarke tells Sky Sports: "I'll just start with a smile! I always get criticised for not smiling but if you can't smile after a performance like that from your players then there would be something wrong with you. I'm delighted, everything came together. It was a good performance, we played good football and we were always on the front to try and win the game. It was a very good night for us.

"When you know your players are in a good place, then obviously you go in with confidence. the players went in with confidence and that was on show tonight.

"Our legs went a little towards the end which is why we made changes to see out the job.

"Another great atmosphere at Hampden, a fantastic crowd who got behind the team when we were starting to flag a little bit, which was really important to give the boys that little boost which made it a little more comfortable towards the end."

  6. Who else is in the play-offs?published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

So, who can Scotland face in the semi-final? The picture isn't completely clear yet with more games to come tomorrow, but here's how it is shaping up...

    Seeded

    Portugal

    Scotland

    Italy

    Russia

    Unseeded

    North Macedonia

    Austria

    Still waiting...

Sweden look good for a home draw and Wales will get there if they can beat Belgium in Cardiff. A draw could well be enough for the Welsh.

Turkey can get into the seeding mix with a big win away to Montenegro.

Poland look like slipping into unseeded team territory after a costly home defeat to Hungary.

Finland will need something special at home to France and could yet be caught by Ukraine (away to Bosnia).

Czech Republic will be the other unseeded team from the Nations League unless Wales slip up - in which case Wales are guaranteed that spot.

  7. How do the play-offs work?published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

    One more time...

Twelve European teams enter the next stage. The 10 group runners-up and two from the Nations League path.

The six best runners-up are at home in a one-off semi-final before a one-leg final, which is not seeded.

The three teams left standing go to Qatar 2022 next November.

  8. World Cup play-offs awaitpublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

A generation of Scotland fans have no experience of the World Cup party since the national team has not been on the biggest stage since 1998.

There was a time when we were always there, qualifying for five in a row between 1974-90.

It's been a tale of woe in the 21st century though, without even a sniff of the play-offs until now.

The draw will be made on 26 November. The games will be played in late March.

  9. Italy join Portugal in the play-offspublished at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

Switzerland hammered Bulgaria 4-0 to win Group C, which means Euro 2020 winners Italy are yet another big name in the play-offs with Scotland after their 0-0 draw in Northern Ireland.

The good news for now is that Scotland will avoid Italy, Portugal and Russia in the semi-finals since all will be seeded at home.

But we still have an anxious wait for the draw since there remains a good chance one of those big boys will be waiting if we get to one of three finals.

  10. The other Group F resultspublished at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

    Israel 3-2 Faroe Islands

    Austria 4-1 Moldova

With a hefty total of 23 points, Scotland finished seven clear of both Austria and Israel. We could meet the Austrians again since they make the play-offs via the Nations League route and will be unseeded.

  11. No suspension worries for Scotlandpublished at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

There were five involved Scotland players on a yellow card going into tonight's game and they all got through without picking up a suspension for the play-off semi-final.

We were worried about a potential fusspot of a referee but the Spanish official let the game flow and Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel was the only player cautioned after having a moan.

Of course, eight players in Steve Clarke's squad will still have those cards hanging over them in the semi, unless the daft rule is changed in time.

  12. 'Goal was a total blur'published at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

On scoring his first international goal, John Souttar adds: "It was a total blur! We worked on that corner during the week and thankfully we scored from it... I'm just delighted.

"My brother Aaron couldn't be here tonight but he helped me a lot during my rehab and I know he's watching tonight so that one is for him."

  13. 'Brilliant night' for goalscorer Souttarpublished at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

Scotland defender John Souttar talking to Sky Sports: "It's absolutely incredible, the atmosphere just now is unbelievable. For me to be involved in a game like that, I can't put it into words.

"I was just looking forward to it, I've went through a lot in the last year with injuries. I couldn't expect anything like this, it was just brilliant."

  15. Six wins in a row for Scotlandpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    FT: Scotland 2-0 Denmark

Scotland make it six wins on the bounce with that fantastic performance.

That hasn't happened since 2007 and it hasn't happened in competitive games since way back in 1930.

Scotland, who lost just once in the campaign, finish four points behind Denmark in Group F, having been third seeds.

And remember, Denmark had won nine from nine before tonight.

Scotland save the best for last, serving up a great win over Group F winners Denmark to secure home advantage in the play-off semi-final.

  20. CLOSE!published at 87 mins

    Scotland 2-0 Denmark

How on earth is it not 3-0?

John McGinn pings in a wonderful flat cross from the left and there is Che Adams at the back post, who picks out Stuart Armstrong with a cushioned header.

The goal is gaping but Armstrong's close-range volley is somehow diverted by the leg of Danish skipper Simon Kjaer.

Unbelievable defending, you have to say!
