Even with the threat of suspensions, you've got to pick your best players. That midfield trio [of Gilmour, McGregor and McGinn] is the heartbeat of the team and that will be the difference tonight, if they can win that battle with Denmark.

  3. 'The pressure is on Scotland'published at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

“I expect a very tough match,” said Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel yesterday. “A full stadium, I expect them to be very confident after their win.

"We played them not so long ago at home. We had a good first half obviously, but we didn’t have it all our own way, especially in the second half. With them being at home, I expect the pressure to be on them, they are expected to do something."

Liam Cooper's personality is a big selling point for Steve Clarke, as well his experience in dealing with big matches against class opponents. Week after week he's coming up against some of the best players in the world

  6. 'Players can handle threat of suspension'published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

It does seem rather rough that yellow cards from this 10-game campaign carry over to the play-offs. And it's potentially unfair since nations in five-team groups are involved in two games fewer.

"You have to learn how to play a game with a yellow card hanging over your head," explained Scotland boss Steve Clarke, who also said it would make sense to rewrite the Fifa rules in this case.

“We just have to try and win the game. As long as we get a normal referee, the players are experienced enough to handle it."

  7. Yellow alert for five Scotland starterspublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

Five of tonight's starting XI are one booking away from a suspension in the play-offs.

Captain Andy Robertson, John McGinn, Billy Gilmour, Che Adams and Stephen O'Donnell are the men 'walking a suspension tightrope'.

Substitute Kevin Nisbet is in the same boat, along with Scott McTominay, who misses out with a throat infection for the second game running, while Jack Hendry has also dropped out, presumably with an injury from Friday.

  8. Scotland going for three in a rowpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

Scotland have won six of their eight home matches against Denmark, including the past two, winning 2-1 in August 2011 and 1-0 in March 2016, both in friendlies.

For any player to come back from three Achilles ruptures is quite incredible. And to get back to playing at this level, he must be absolutely thrilled. I'm very confident that he won't let anybody down

What a night for John Souttar. He won three Scotland caps in 2018 but the Hearts defender has been through injury hell since then.

He's been bang in form for the Edinburgh club this season.

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

Scotland XI: Gordon, Souttar, Cooper, Tierney, O'Donnell, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson, McGinn, Christie, Adams.

Three changes from Friday's win in Moldova, with Stephen O'Donnell replacing suspended right-back Nathan Patterson and Ryan Christie in for Stuart Armstrong, while John Souttar takes over from Jack Hendry at the back.

Lyndon Dykes was rated 50-50 with the double-whammy of a knock and illness and the big striker doesn't even make the bench.

  12. Far from meaningless matchpublished at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

The top six runners-up will be at home in the play-off semi-finals.

A win tonight gets Scotland a game at Hampden. Defeat means a tough mission on the road.

A draw? It might be enough. It probably won't be... We'll have to wait for tomorrow's results to know.

  13. Second place secure for Scotlandpublished at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2021

    Scotland v Denmark (19:45)

This is nice isn't it? Scotland go into their final World Cup qualifier with a play-off spot already sewn up.

Steve Clarke's side started as third seeds but go into tonight's game with Group F winners Denmark at Hampden seven points clear of Israel and Austria after a run of five straight wins.

Can they keep that momentum going in front of a sell-out crowd in Glasgow and make sure of a home draw in the next phase?
