  2. Leeds' injury woespublished at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

Man City v Leeds (Tues, 20:00 GMT)

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was up in front of the media earlier today to talk about his side's trip to Manchester City.

But there was lots of media chat around the fitness of Kalvin Phillips, who has hamstring and shoulder issues.

"I can't clarify anything on Kalvin at the moment," said Bielsa.

"There is no news on whether he is going to be operated on. At the moment I have no precise news over his hamstring tendon or his shoulder."

The Argentine went on to say that injuries to Pascal Struijk and Rodrigo were ones he had never seen before, with both issues stemming from colliding bones in the players' foot and heel respectively.

"The injury Pascal has is unusual," said Bielsa. "An explosive moment made two bones in his feet collide together and that doesn't generate an injury but has the effect of a knock on his bone and that generates pain.

"Until that pain disappears it's going to prevent him from playing. In my whole career I've never seen an injury like that.

"The same as Rodrigo's injury, an injury in his heel, which only disappears if the pain disappears, which I also haven't seen in many years. The specialists who treat it say there's very few cases like this."

Brighton have also had Covid-19-related issues with manager Graham Potter saying that there have been "three or four" positive tests among his playing squad.

At present their match with Wolves on Wednesday is not currently under threat but the Seagulls' ficture against Tottenham was postponed at the weekend due to positive cases among the Spurs squad.

"We've got a combination of injuries and a bit of Covid ourselves," said Potter.

"We've got three or four, I would say, at the moment. And obviously that's something we have to deal with, like everybody else. "Now we're just checking and making sure it's at that number."

  4. 'Liverpool fared slightly worse'published at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool fared slightly worse at the second time of asking. Italian champions and Serie A leaders Inter Milan will present a tougher challenge than original opponents Red Bull Salzburg but Jurgen Klopp's side will still be favourites.

Manchester City will also believe they can find their way into the last eight as they will now meet Sporting Lisbon of Portugal after the re-draw.

They would also been favourites from their first pairing against Villarreal and each of the Premier League sides will firmly believe they can reach the last eight.

Norwich v Aston Villa (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

    Aston Villa

More from Steven Gerrard on Aston Villa's Covid issues. He did not want to name the players who have tested positive.

"I will stick to the medical confidentiality," explained.

"I want to wish those who have the positive cases well. They are isolating now so obviously we send our best wishes to them.

"I will speak to them all this afternoon and fingers cross it is contained now."

  6. 'Common sense to cancel training' - Gerrardpublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

Norwich v Aston Villa (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Like Manchester United, Aston Villa have been hit by a Covid-19 outbreak, but their game with Norwich tomorrow is set to go ahead.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard confirmed that "a couple of staff members and a couple of players" have tested positive for the virus, which led to Gerrard cancelling training on Sunday.

However, the squad trained as normal on Monday.

"I have just listened to the guidance and tried to stick to all the guidelines," said Gerrard.

"I made the decision yesterday, because it was a recovery day, and because we didn't have a pitch session, and on the back of receiving a couple of positive cases, I thought it was just common sense to just cancel the session.

"We re-tested this morning and we have got a couple of staff and a couple of players missing for the foreseeable future but the vast majority have come through the test this morning and we look forward to competing against Norwich tomorrow."

  7. 'Atletico tough draw for United but never write off Simeone'published at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

The high farce of the twice-run Champions League last-16 draw was yet another example of sport's ability to make something seemingly simply so complicated - but at least the Premier League's quartet of clubs finally know their fate.

For Chelsea, it was the same second time around after a "software" glitch was resolved as they were paired once more with French champions Lille, a draw that will leave them cautiously optimistic of progress.

Manchester United, having originally been lined up for the next chapter in the rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after drawing Paris St-Germain, still got a tough one in Atletico Madrid in the revised version.

Tough, but maybe not quite as tough as it once was with Atletico struggling for form. No-one, however, should write off coach Diego Simeone's ability to make life hard for anyone in this tournament.

  8. Man Utd in discussions with Premier League over Brentford matchpublished at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

More on that situation at Manchester United...

"Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a covid infection and player preparation perspective.

"Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion."

Now then some breaking news from Manchester United.

In a statement just issued the club says it "can confirm that following confirmation of yesterday’s positive Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington training complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.

"Individuals who tested positive are isolating as per Premier League protocols."

Chris: I really do think Uefa is making it far too convoluted by stopping teams from the same country playing each other at this stage. It instead just happens frequently at the latter stages, which is when you really want your big intercontinental ties, and not domestic battles in the bigger games.

Tim: Some big clubs going out early now - PSG or Real, Man Utd or Atletico, Inter or Liverpool.

Mike: I'm not sure what the fuss is about concerning drawing PSG. As a Manchester Utd fan I was quite happy with the first draw. They're ridden with problems in defence and play like a bunch of individuals. Exactly like us! Real Madrid, in their current form, will see them off.

Lots of people are asking why Liverpool couldn't have drawn Villarreal in the re-draw, so here it is:

    • If Liverpool had drawn Villarreal, Inter Milan would have been drawn against either Juventus or Real Madrid.
    • That couldn't happen as Inter and Juve are from the same country and Inter were in the same group as Real Madrid.
    • So, there you have it: Uefa got it right at the second time of asking.

  17. 'Liverpool still clear favourites'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

Michael Owen, speaking on BT Sport: "It's a slightly worse tie than the original but Liverpool should still be confident about it.

"I think it's a nice trip for the fans and the players to play in an iconic stadium. Liverpool are still clear favourites. The toys won't be completely out of the pram."

  20. 'Slightly easier for United'published at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

Owen Hargreaves, speaking on BT Sport: "Atletico play more defensive on the counter, they have some world-class players. Slightly easier for United but still really difficult. Flip of a coin."
