Now for a few stats around some of those matches...

Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in European competition for the first time since November 1991, when they were eliminated by the Spaniards in the second round of the European Cup Winners' Cup.

If memory serves Atletico scored two late goals to win the first leg 3-0 in Spain.

Manchester City play Sporting Lisbon for the first time since the 2011-12 Europa League last 16, with the Portuguese side winning on away goals back then.

Chelsea have won each of their last four meetings with French sides in all European competitions (including twice vs Lille), having won just five of their first 16 such games.

What to make of that draw. Real Madrid clearly the big losers on paper anyway.

What. A. Tie. Can't imagine Real Madrid will be overly happy now, they had Benfica in the first draw.

Right not long until the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League. Anyone excited!?!?

Deja vu or what? Then again the official anthem of the competition is always worth another listen.

  17. 'Uefa has come out and acted swiftly'published at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2021

Meanwhile, Joe Cole, Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves are still in the BT Sport studio, ready to go again.

Those boys would have expected to be on the way home and have their feet up by now.

Cole: "Chelsea will be slightly disappointed. They could've got Real Madrid, Bayern Munich. But it has to be fair. Someone was going to miss out. Uefa have come out and acted swiftly, that's a positive thing.

Owen: "There will be mixed emotions and sob stories all around. It was a mistake and they'll learn from that. There's no weeping now."

Hargreaves: "United avoiding PSG would be a dream."

Brentford v Man Utd (Tues, 19:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick on reports that French forward Anthony Martial wants to leave the club:

"I don’t communicate with agents via the media and press. The player hasn’t spoken with me or us about it.

"After the final training session before the Crystal Palace game, after having trained with team, he informed the doctor and the medical department that he would not be available because the pain in his knee is too big.

"We have to wait and see. Maybe he can train again tomorrow but I have to speak to the doctor first. To be honest, what his agent says via the media is not of that much interest to me.

Asked if he would seek to speak to Martial to get his side of the story the German added: "No. Then I would react to what his agent has said and it should be the player. If he really has the wish to go to another club it should be the player who informs either the Board or myself. I have never spoken about a player via the media and via agents."

United beat Norwich 1-0 on Saturday as David de Gea was named man of the match following a superb performance to preserve a clean sheet.

Read the full match report and see how the players rated

Rangnick said after the win that it was "too early" to know whether he would freshen up his side to face Brentford.

"A few players are available again; Luke Shaw was in the squad, maybe Aaron Wan-Bissaka might be available for Tuesday, even Edinson [Cavani] might be an option. But it is too early."

Up next, we have one extra Premier League news conference to take in with Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick speaking to the media as his side prepare to take on Brentford on Tuesday night.

A last-minute winner against Watford at the weekend saw the Bees break a streak of four straight defeats.

And the German says he is expecting to face a high-intensity Brentford team.

"I saw the Brentford game against Watford. They are another high intensity team, maybe more physical than Norwich.

"We need to be aware and prepare for that different level of intensity, but we have to wait and see.

"It's about taking next steps. It's easier to take those steps if you are winning games. Now we have to try and raise the level we play against the ball up front."
