"They are a good club who are coming here with a few players that I know and it will not be an easy game and we will all have to step up to get the win.

While most of the chatter among the home fans will be about which new signing will be next through the door, this is also a huge day for League One Cambridge.

This will be the first time the sides have met since Newcastle beat Cambridge on their way to gaining promotion to the Premier League in April 1993. Andy Cole was on target that day.

“There is going to be an incredible turnout," said U's head coach Mark Bonner.

"Which is no real surprise, everyone knows how well supported Newcastle are and the fact that they are in a real positive mindset as a club after the takeover, and with the excitement of the transfer window, which hopefully will bring the best out of us and really inspire us to give a good performance.

“As we know, we will need to be at the very top of our game to be competitive against them, but that is something to look forward to. It is games like this that we have worked really hard for."

  9. Fairytale FA Cup wins more difficult nowpublished at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2022

Port Vale v Brentford (15:00 GMT)

Brentford begin their FA Cup campaign away to League Two side Port Vale today, but manager Thomas Frank believes fairytale triumphs for teams such as the Bees are becoming more difficult due to the strength of England's 'top six' clubs.

"I would love to be the next Wigan to make a fantastic cup run and get a chance to win it," Frank said.

"I think it's more difficult these days. I think the classic top-six clubs, if they are there at the end, they just have so much quality. The chance of them winning is just bigger if they are in a semi-final or final.

"If we should go that far, it's one game and anything can happen, that's thebeauty of the cup tournaments. But I've seen more and more that the bigger clubs in the end need and want trophies for the fans and go harder for it compared to other years."
