  2. 'I am a big animal lover. I was really disappointed'published at 23:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to the media about Kurt Zouma: "I am really disappointed and the club have taken all the actions that they can do at the moment. They are working on that behind the scenes. My job is to pick the best team for West Ham and Kurt was part of that team.

"I am a big animal lover. As I said, my job is to try and win for West Ham and to put out the best team for that.

"I think the club would rather deal with it all in time and they will let you know what the action is.

"I was really disappointed with what I saw and what I was told. But as I've said, it was my job to find the best team for West Ham. There will be people who will be disappointed at that and I understand that totally.

"I am someone who cares a lot about my dogs and horses and all the people I am connected with. I have spoken to him and we will move on as much as we can. We wanted to get this game out of the way and we understand nobody will be pleased about it. It is a poor situation."

  3. 'We didn't expect it from Kurt'published at 23:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    West Ham United

More from West Ham manager David Moyes: "My feeling was that Kurt has apologised and I understand a lot of people will not just be accepting of an apology. But to me he came out and said that honestly and I had to do my job. That was to pick the best team.

"He is really disappointed. We have all felt it through the team and the club. But we are all of the same feeling that it is something we didn't expect of Kurt. We didn't see that in his character or from him in anything we've come across with him.

"I always felt I had to separate them and let the club do their side and me do mine, which was the football side.

"You are probably talking to one of the most disciplinarian managers there is. I would always act if I felt that it had to be done. I had to try and get a result tonight and Kurt was in our XI tonight. It was my decision to play him."

  4. 'It's something we can't understand'published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was looking like there were going to be no goals. I thought we just about shaded it in the second half. It was an improvement on the first half, but not that great an improvement.

"Roy’s teams are always well organised. We tried to play but we didn’t pass the ball as cleanly and quickly as we would have liked. The Premier League is really difficult - whoever you get makes it really difficult."

On Jarrod Bowen: "I think at different times of the season you need players to stand up. Michail Antonio was fantastic in the early part of the season. When his goals dried up, Bowen was the one to step in.

"He looks more mature and calm in his decisions. [The goal] was probably the first time in the game we got through the lines. It took us about 70 minutes or so to get that chance. Thankfully it fell to Jarrod, because he’s the one in form with his goalscoring."

On whether he is disappointed with Kurt Zouma: "Oh 100%. It’s something we’re all disappointed with and something we can’t understand. He’ll learn from it. Today I had to pick a football team that gave me the best chance of winning the game as manager of West Ham.

"I’m also a human being and a great animal lover, so I know how people feel. But I’m also a football manager here and responsible for getting results here."

  5. 'You need to sweat blood in this league'published at 22:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "You tend to judge your team's perform through rose-tinted spectacles sometimes because it is the team you work with. I was pleased with a lot of what we did tonight and I think it was a little bit cruel to lose the game to a deflection. I don't think David or any of their people would have said it was a scandal had we not lost the game. But we are playing a form team. I am not disappointed with the performance but I am in the result.

"I have been in equally bad situations. We have quality players coming back. The players will hopefully get more confident in what we are trying to do. Even already with very little work they have shown and picked up out concepts really well. We need to align that now with the danger we think we have in attack, win some matches and not worry too much about what teams around us are doing.

"Two new players - Samir and Kamara - have made a big difference. They are quality players. We have worked hard but all teams do. I cringe when I hear people say they worked hard on the training pitch because who doesn't? That is part of the job. If your players are mot prepared to sweat a bit of blood for you, you will not do well in this league. Manchester City will sweat blood, and they have quality players. I am absolutely not disappointed or frustrated in how we performed. It is now important the platers take what they think they did well and make sure we are ready to go again against Brighton.

"We had a good defence but they have a good defence too. It is very difficult to produce that golden goal chance at the right time. When you are down at the bottom these kind of games happen to you. The deflected goal can make you feel sorry for yourselves, but you need to avoid that temptation."

  6. 'There is a good feeling in the stadium and the dressing room'published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Newcastle 3-1 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the day: "I think it was a tight game, it was a tough game. The first half was even, the second half we were the better team and created the better chances.

"It created a really good feeling around the stadium and supporters played their part. It gave us a good feeling and we built on that.

"It was nice to have that two goal cushion, which we haven't had. I felt we looked like a creative force.

"There is a good feeling in the dressing room, confidence levels are building. Our navigating of the game in tight situations has improved.

"I hope to see a big psychological effect from this win."

On new midfielder Bruno Guimaraes: "He's a technician. You saw from his cameo that he's confident in his ability, which is great, and I think he is going to be an outstanding player for the club for many years. It will take him time to get to the pace of the Premier League but he is not afraid to mix it.

"I think the fans will really take to him."

  7. 'There's no limit for us'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice: "The objective tonight was always to get the three points. The level of performance was not at our usual standard, but we got the three points.

"You’re never going to be perfect throughout the season. There’s going to be games where you need to grind through and get wins. The main thing is we won and we’re still pushing for that top four spot.

"I thought Watford were brilliant in the way they set up. They obviously watched us and set up with two banks of four. They made it very difficult for us.

"We’ll take it one game at a time. We’re on 40 points now – I think last year we got to Europe on 64 or 65. There’s no limit for us. We’ve got big games coming up – let’s see where it takes us.

"It’s the best place to play football here when the fans are up and buzzing. We know ourselves when the performances are below par, but the main thing is we got the three points."

On Jarrod Bowen: "Without his goals we’d be struggling. He’s really stepped it up. His goals and assists - he’s a really top player and he’s going to be a star."

  8. 'We certainly gave a reaction'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Burnley 1-1 Man Utd

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche, speaking to MOTD: "It is difficult. We are not flying that is for sure. I just reminded them of the belief I have in them. We were too direct in the first half and we had to change.

"Second half we were trying to progress, trying to be on the front foot but also stay defensively organised. I was very pleased with the mix. All you can ask as a manager is a reaction and we certainly gave a reaction.

"It is not easy. Clean sheet down at Arsenal. Close but no cigar against Watford and tonight we created a chance against Manchester United and got a point. We don't want to be too greedy but we want to build on that. There is a belief here.

"It is not a major lack of belief it is just that edge of confidence that drifts a bit. We played in the second half and could have nicked a second one at times."

  9. 'Confidence levels are low - it smacks you in the face'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Newcastle 3-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard speaking to BT Sport: "Of course the players' confidence levels are low - it smacks you in the face.

"When I came to the club it was on a bad run of results. There is no magic wand to fix that. This is the Premier League - it's tough.

"The only thing to do is work hard and look forward.

"It was never going to be easy and this result puts it into sharp focus, but we must build that confidence.

"This is one we will have to reflect on, but it is normal to be down and disappointed. My job is to get them up for the next game.

"We have been here for one week Newcastle have had time to work. Both clubs know the direction they want to go, but we have to give time to the players who have come in.

"This was never going to be a simple ride and we need a sharp focus on what we are doing."

  10. 'It is up to the players to maintain the faith'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford boss Roy Hodgson, speaking to BT Sport: "It was an unfortunate goal and up to that point we had been defending well and it had been an even game. Goals change everything and it was hard for us after that. It gave West Ham confidence and forced us to lose composure. We had to reject some of the work we had been doing to keep them at bay. The players gave it everything. I can't ask more of them. It is sad for a manager when he sees his team lose to that sort of goal.

"I will take positives as I thought the team worked exceptionally hard. I saw the principles we are trying to get them to believe in in our play. It is up to them to maintain that faith and idea that if they keep playing that way and doing what we and they think we have to do the results will come. When you lose a game like tonight and you are down near the bottom it can have a very negative effect.

"They believed going in to the game they could get a positive result and over the 90 minutes think they were very close to doing so. It is a stab in the heart when you don't get that. We now need to get them out of that black mood and reproduce the kind of performances we have had in the last two. Part of the job of a manager is to maintain a good environment and the sense of positive things happening. If it was simple everybody would be a football manager instead of doing it on fantasy football."

  11. 'We were a bit fortunate'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to BT Sport: "We’ve played a lot better than we did tonight, but Watford have improved. Roy’s tightened them up and he’s showed that tonight. We were a bit fortunate with the goal, but our second-half play merited the win.

"It looked for long periods that we weren’t going to win anything. We got a bit better when [Manuel] Lanzini came on. Their goalkeeper made a really good save, but our goalkeeper made a really good save too."

On climbing back into the top four: "I didn’t know that. I think if that’s the case it just shows what the Premier League’s like. Watford came very close to getting another point tonight."

On Kurt Zouma: "He will remain available for selection. The club will sort the other side of it out and I’ll look after the football side."

  12. 'Frustrating again'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Burnley 1-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, speaking to MOTD: "I think we played a fantastic first half, couldn't have played any better. We scored three goals, the second that was disallowed I cannot understand. It was a very, very soft decision by the linesman. He flagged the foul five or six seconds after it took pace.

"Anyway it was 1-0 at half time, we knew they would come out in the second half in a more aggressive way and the only thing I can complain the team about was we were not aggressive enough in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

"If you look into the whole game we dominated for most of it. Winning one point is not enough and another frustrating again.

"It really surprised me he flagged when the ball was in the ne. Had he really seen the foul? The first I can understand why it was disallowed, it was a hard one, but the second I cannot understand.

"[In the second half] We were playing tiki taka football in our own half and not direct enough. We had the counter attack but gave the ball away too easily in their box."

Need to find consistency? "Yes, but under normal circumstances we should have been two or three up at half time. It should have been more than 1-0. Today we scored three goals, I cannot blame the team for not scoring."

  13. 'We scored three goals'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Burnley 1-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick: "We scored three goals! That is different to Friday. The second one that was disallowed, the linesman flagged foul but 10 seconds after that incident. This was a very soft decision I must say.

"Again we played an excellent first half. We controlled and dominated the game. We scored the three goals but two were disallowed.

"In the second half we were not aggressive enough. It was clear they would come out and be aggressive. The way we allowed them to score, we didn't defend the whole situation.

"A frustrating night for us because we should have won that game comfortably.

"We scored three goals in the first half so I couldn't blame the team for not having a killer instinct in the first half.

"In the end it was also a little question of luck. One point for a performance like this is just not enough."

  14. 'Two points dropped'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Burnley 1-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, speaking to BT Sport: "I think you saw the first half. We had control. We have got to win the game with the amount of chances we created. We had to get that second goal. Two points dropped.

"We wanted to dominate the game but for sure when you come to Burnley away you are not going to dominate for 90 minutes. We had to see iit out better. We conceded like against Middlesbrough when they had that spell of pressure. We have got to be that bit more clinical.

"It was a disappointing goal on our behalf to concede. We came out in the second half a bit sloppy. We had long enough in the game to come back from that and try and find the winner.

"We demand on ourselves to win the football match so it is disappointing."

On Varane goal being disallowed: "I think he gave it offside. He said it wasn't a foul. Interfering with pay, I don't know. I don't think Rodriguez would have been affecting the goal. I think the other one for Paul Pogba's judged to have fouled. It was definitely not a foul."

  15. 'It was a tough game after only a week together'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Newcastle 3-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard speaking to Match of the Day: "It's disappointing for the result. It was a tough game to have as we have only been together for a week.

"There were some positives to take, we had some good moments with the front three in the first half, but then we lost two big players in Demarai Gray and Yerry Mina and things changed.

"The main thing for me was how we dropped off in the game.

"At the weekend we had a positive result and the confidence went up but you could see how quickly that confidence went back down.

"The circumstances were difficult - to lose two big players made it tough.

"I have seen a lot of people put a lot on this game and we need to not let our heads drop. The work starts now.

"The players have to believe in what we are doing. The way of playing hasn't worked so far this season, that's why I am here.

"The confidence and belief has to be built and worked on the training ground. We are here a short time and it needs to change quickly because we want to get results."

  16. 'We felt we could have got at least a point'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford striker Joshua King, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a tough game. We defended so well and could have grabbed something. I can see that we are improving. It started off last week. We lost in the last 10 minutes and we need to focus on Saturday now.

"Our last game against Burnley was our first clean sheet of the season and that isn't good enough. It was trying to do the same again here. It is always tough coming here. They have talented players and they know their structure. We felt we should have left here with at least a point.

"The last two game shave been positive since Roy took over. It has been an uplift. We lost today and we know we have a big job with 16 games left. We have a good squad. We have the fight and the players to keep ourselves safe. It is going to be tough. There are five teams battling for it and only three go down."

  17. 'If you don't shoot, you don't score'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-0 Watford

    West Ham United

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, speaking to BT Sport: "It was tough. They have changed manager, got a good point at Burnley and were really solid here. It was difficult at times, we had a lot of the ball and it was a case of keep plugging away. With the goal we got a slice of luck but it happens.

"I came into a bit of space and it was driving and driving and I just thought 'if you don't shoot, you don't score'. Got the shot and the deflection and thankfully it wrong-footed the keeper and went in.

"Every week putting me in then starting eleven gives me confidence as a player. It is then little developments to my game, not just with the ball and without the ball. It is coming into those pockets of space.

"We know how important tonight was even if it was an ugly game. All we can do is focus on ourselves. We have a lot of games coming up so it is important to take maximum points."

  18. 'We took the game by the scruff of the neck'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Burnley 1-1 Man Utd

    Burnley

Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez, speaking to BT Sport: "Manchester United are a great side. They made it difficult for us and I think for us to get a point shows the great character of the lads.

"They had one disallowed and you are thinking it might be one those nights where you get your chance and take it.

"We took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half."

On his goal: "It has been too long! I always have that hunger and belief I will score goals and hopefully I will go on a run now."

  19. 'To come from behind shows character'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Newcastle 3-1 Everton

    Newcastle United

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier speaking to BT Sport: "It shows massive character from the team. We are going to need everybody. We know the position we are in. We got a great three points but still loads of games to go and we are taking one at a time.

"Feel we controlled the game and were dominant. To concede from a set-piece was disappointing, but to come from behind shows character and bodes well for the rest of the season.

"The most important thing is the team and the team performance.

"I came here to challenge myself and help my team-mates. I am here to help on and off the pitch. Most important thing is results and to stay in Premier League and that's our aim."

  20. Postpublished at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    FT: Newcastle 3-1 Everton

Everton have lost 11 of their last 14 Premier League fixtures (W1-D2-L11), after they were beaten in only one of their opening seven league games this season (W4-D2-L1). Since the beginning of match round eight (16-18 October), the Toffees (5) have amassed fewer points than any other team.
