Sean Dyche says his team "have to start making things happen" as pressure at the bottom of the Premier League table begins to mount.

"We've got to keep working and continuing to believe," he said. "But we have to start making things happen.

"I can't make other teams around us win or lose games.

"We've got a tough spell of games coming up but all games are winnable and that's our mentality. We're always aware of the teams around us but we're aware of ourselves more."

The Clarets have pieced together a three-game unbeaten run, including a credible draw at home to Manchester United on Tuesday.

On keeping up moral, Dyche said: "Our recent performances have shown a much better side of what we want to do so it's now about making it happen.

"No one gives you anything in football, you have to go and get it."

  2. 'Last night - and Twinkletoes Weghorst - gave me reason to believe'published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never, external

I can’t remember the last time I sat at Turf Moor and thought we had no chance of getting anything out of a game. But that’s precisely how I felt at half-time last night, after watching Paul Pogba’s strike sail through the air and land with a swagger into the back of Nick Pope’s net.

    Then, something happened.

The team came out fighting. Fighting to give the Turf Moor faithful hope. Fighting for their Premier League lives. Weghorst terrorised a, dare I say it, slightly stunned United defence and his blossoming partnership with Jay Rodriguez may well prove vital in our determined survival hopes.

I had genuinely forgotten how to celebrate a goal, but my goodness did that feel nice when the roof erupted and the Burnley fans rose to their feet. The relief was palpable at the ground. Finally the fans had something to cling to.

But we have to start turning these draws into wins to have any chance of closing that gap. Everton are not going to get relegated so that Newcastle result was a blow as we have to finish above them if we are to survive.

You can only take one game at a time, but last night gave me a reason to believe it’s not all over. Twinkletoes Weghorst is the man.

  3. Burnley battle onpublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 BST)

Burnley have their own issues to resolve.

They are a club that have continually defied the odds with an answer for getting their way out of relegation bother. But this feels like it would be Sean Dyche's greatest escape if he can pull it off.

They are currently bottom of the table, four points from safety. They do have at least two games in hand on those above them, which could be the lifeline they need.

Seven points from the last 30 available to them isn't ideal, but they have managed three successive draws ahead of today's game, including against Arsenal and Man Utd, to show the fight is there.

  4. 'We have to deal with the circumstancespublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking at a wet and windy Turf Moor: "Jota was due to start, with Sadio coming from the bench today but Kota had a dead leg and couldn't train yesterday. Now he looks fine but we were not sure. We prepared everything with Sadio, knowing he knows what to do.

"In the end we line up with 11, but it is not who plays but how we play. That is what is important. It looks like it is all made up for Burnley but we have to enjoy this and put in a proper shift. Where we can we must play football and in the other moments we must defend with all we have and deal with the circumstances. We are here to win the game.

"I am nearly seven years in England so I probably played more of these games than others. It can be very nice, sunny and in 20 degrees or whatever, but it is all fine. We are not ordering circumstances, we are dealing with it. Both teams have to deal with it. We are the team that should have the ball more so we have to use the circumstances."

Jurgen Klopp says he is "ready for a proper fight" at Turf Moor against Burnley on Sunday.

The Liverpool boss paid tribute to the Clarets, arguing that despite their position at the bottom of the table, they have a team full of quality.

"It's always been uncomfortable at Burnley since I came to Liverpool," he said. "You cannot praise enough what Sean Dyche has done to keep them in the league so comfortably every season.

"They ask for all the physicality you can give and then on top of that they have footballers everywhere. If we let them play, they will play.

"But we have our own targets and we have to be ready for a proper fight. We'll go for everything, we'll bring our supporters and they'll create an atmosphere as well.

"If we can match the intensity of Burnley or even go over it, then we have a good chance. But if not then we will, quite rightly, get nothing and that's football."

  6. 'They might want to sell Firmino'published at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jota was brought in to break into that front three and it was can anyone break into it. It has been proven you can. Look at Diaz now is he the long term successor to Mane? Do they want to sell Mane and recoup some money or do they want to be stronger and have a bench like Man City?

I think its the latter. I think they would love to keep Salah and Mane and have a ferocious battle for places. I think they might want to sell Firmino and keep the others and I think they will bring someone else in.

Klopp is a huge fan of Firmino but when you look at the big games now, it is Jota he turns to. His record is phenomenal. It is whether you can retain someone like Firmino, who is happy to play a bit part.

  7. 'Liverpool are looking relentless'published at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

    Ian Kennedy
    Reporter, BBC Radio Merseyside Sport

One of the arts of great management is, I’m guessing, the ability to buy a player and have him look as though he’s been playing for you for years.

Jurgen Klopp has seemingly done it again with Luis Diaz, whose cameo against Cardiff in the FA Cup was followed last night by an impressive full debut against Leicester.

He was full of great running, has quick feet, doesn’t give the ball away and even likes a tackle. His first goal won’t be far away, and when it comes it’s likely to be the first of many.

A bit like Diogo Jota, who was excellent and weighed in with two more goals to take his tally for the season to 17. Jota is another example of a player brought in by Klopp and able to make an immediate impact - just like Salah did, Mane, Van Dijk, and the list goes on and on. Players who hit the ground running and don’t stop.

The gap at the top remains big, but Liverpool are looking relentless in their pursuit of Manchester City. And they’re still in all the cups with all their big hitters available and looking hungry.

February will tell us a lot - Liverpool have league, Champions League and FA Cup matches to play, plus a Carabao Cup final. But Klopp’s squad looks really strong now and very much ready for the challenge.

  8. Title race 'will go down to the wire'published at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    Burnley v Liverpool (14:00 GMT)

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison believes the title race "is still wide open" after Liverpool cut the gap to leaders Manchester City to nine points with victory over Leicester.

The Reds have a game in hand on Pep Guardiola's side and have to play City again before the end of the season.

"They're still in it - if they win those two games, it's down to three points," Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "I think it will go right down to wire."

Liverpool showed their wealth of attacking talent against Leicester, with Luis Diaz impressing on his full debut and Mohamed Salah returning off the bench. Sadio Mane is also close to being in contention after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.

"Jurgen Klopp has so many options," said Morrison. "If he can keep everyone fit, they have a great opportunity.

"Guardiola knows it's not over. I never thought it was. There are lots of ups and downs in the Premier League and there is still a long way to go."

He knows how crucial he is to Liverpool. To hear he wants to play straight away tells you everything about him.

So this is what Liverpool are up against. And today, while simple looking on paper, away at the side bottom of the table, is far from it.

Sean Dyche's Burnley are not a side for lying down. They've shown that for numerous top-flight seasons now. They demonstrated it against Manchester United last time out. They're going to be up for it again today.

Raheem Sterling took the headlines with a hat-trick but he wasn't alone in producing a stellar display at Carrow Road yesterday.

City were tested a bit early on but once they settled they dominated to a ludicrous degree. They had 72% possession, 22 shots, nine on target, four of them finding the net.

They've now scored more goals than anyone else in the league and conceded fewer.

On top of that, City have now scored at least four goals in a Premier League away game 21 times time under Pep Guardiola, at least eight more than any other side since the Spaniard joined the club.

  19. Where did the three-horse race go?published at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

I swear it wasn't that long ago that we were contemplating the prospect of a rare three-horse race for this season's Premier League title. How long did that last? A week? Ten days?

After flirting with the possibility of a challenge, Chelsea have not only failed to amass enough points to keep pace but struggled to maintain the kind of standards of performance Liverpool and especially Manchester City have set.

So a likely City procession is what we are facing. Once again, they were utterly ruthless yesterday...

  20. Staying alivepublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen KloppImage source, Getty Images

It's just about alive isn't it? Just.

I mean, if Liverpool win their two games in hand - which they are absolutely favourites to do - then it's a six-point gap at the top. It's not completely out of the question that this could be overturned with just over a dozen games to go. We've all seen crazier things happen in football.

It is then that you look at Manchester City's form and the fact they have taken 43 points from the last 45 available.

What this all goes towards creating is zero margin for error for the Reds. And a potentially fascinating match today at a Burnley side scrapping for their lives.
