Harry Kane has played in all 16 of England’s matches in the Nations League - and only scored two goals (plus three assists).

Only Moldova’s Oleg Reabciuk has played more games in the competition (18).

Italy have only won two of their last nine games, losing 5-2 to Germany in their last match.

They have not lost consecutive games since the 2014 World Cup against Costa Rica and Uruguay (beating England in their other game).

The same woman who sang God Save the King throws off her red cardigan and is now wearing an Italy kit, singing their national anthem.

This is England's first game since Queen Elizabeth II died and King Charles III took the throne.

That means God Save the King is being sung before an England game for the first time since a home game with Austria on 28 November 1951.

"When King George VI died [in February 1952] there were midweek fixtures that same day," Alex Jackson from the National Football Museum in Manchester said.

"There were a number of FA Cup ties and some league fixtures. Before each game they sang 'Abide with Me' which was followed by a two-minute silence and then sang God Save the Queen."

England were pre-tournament favourites to win their Nations League group but now have an 80% chance of finishing bottom and suffering relegation to League B according to Gracenote's simulations.

Eric Dier is back in the England squad having made his last international appearance in November 2020 and he believes he is playing at the "best level" of his career thanks to Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.

"I don't want to sound like a teacher's pet but he has done a lot for me," Dier said.

"Tactically I have learnt a lot. Obviously there is a huge emphasis on it with him and I have learnt so much, different things tactically.

"He is the godfather of that [wing-back] system so I feel like with him you're constantly learning and evolving within that system, constantly adding new things."

England captain and Spurs team-mate Harry Kane told BBC Radio Live: “I think he has improved. He would be the first to admit that.

“Consistently, it’s probably the best period of his career.

“Antonio is a great coach, I think he gets the best out of a lot of his players that he works with."

Bukayo Saka has been voted the 2021-22 England men’s player of the year by the fans.

The 21-year-old Arsenal winger beat Declan Rice and Harry Kane into second and third.

Saka scored three goals in nine caps last season.

England have never won a competitive away game against Italy.

The Three Lions have failed to win in five meetings with the Italians since a 2-1 friendly success in 2012.

Their last competitive win against the Azzurri was in qualifying for the 1978 World Cup at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate says England's players cannot do much more beyond discussing human rights issues in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Captain Harry Kane will wear a OneLove armband in England's upcoming Nations League games and at the World Cup.

But the FA has been criticised for the delay in its statement on human rights.

"There is not a lot more the players in particular can do other than talk about those issues and put them on the table," said England boss Southgate.

"We have got to be realistic about what is achievable and also we have taken good advice on what people would like.

"I haven't seen yet, other than not going to the tournament, what else it would be that people would be looking for us to do.

"We are always ears open in terms of listening to opinions, that's what we have tried to do through this whole process."

England remain "one of the best teams in the world", says Italy boss Roberto Mancini.

Italy beat Gareth Southgate's England in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley last summer - but have since failed to qualify for this winter's World Cup.

England qualified for Qatar but have yet to win in four Nations League games and could be relegated.

"The English team is a great team," Mancini said.

"It was a great team in Euro 2020 and it was a great team before."

The other game in England's group is between Germany and Hungary.

Hungary will reach the Nations League finals, and book a Euro 2024 play-off place, if they beat Germany and Italy do not beat England.

But Germany will top the group going into the final game with England if they win tonight. We will bring you updates from Leipzig.

There were a couple of Nations League games earlier on.

Georgia have been promoted to League B - the tier England could be relegated to - after beating North Macedonia 2-0.

That also secures them a Euro 2024 play-off place.

Estonia beat Malta 2-1 - with a late winner from Scottish football journeyman Henri Anier - to seal promotion to League C.

England boss Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think subconsciously when you're winning you maybe don't reflect quite as deeply on why you are winning, or even some of the things that aren't quite right even though you are winning.

"When you lose like we did, then you reflect on everything and go really deep. That's not a bad process.

"I have been through a difficult run of results as a manager before and that's helpful because you know 'why'. If you didn't know 'why' poorer results happen, then that would be more of a concern."

Jack Grealish says criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate this summer was "very harsh".

England failed to win any of their four Nations League games in June, including 1-0 and 4-0 defeats by Hungary.

However, Southgate led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and a first European Championship final in 2021.

"I thought it was harsh but sometimes that's what you get if you're English. I've had my fair share," Manchester City winger Grealish said.

"We reached the final last year - then the loss to Hungary at the start of the last camp, but before that the last time we'd lost a game over 90 minutes was Belgium in November 2020."
