Not often Declan Rice puts a foot wrong but a worse defensive header you will not see.

Typical. I praise Declan Rice for his defensive duties in one post. The next he does something like that.

    James Collins

    It’s fully deserved from Newcastle.

Declan Rice doesn’t seem to be at the races today. He’s just missed the ball and it’s come off his shoulder, but it’s a clever, clever finish from Willock.

    Joe Willock

    Oh no, Declan Rice!

A poor attempt at a headed clearance lets in Joe Willock who, under pressure from two players, manages to find the net from close range.

His shot hits the post before rolling over the line after some lovely link-up play by Jacob Murphy and Ryan Fraser.

Declan Rice is not just a decent midfielder. He's also good at getting back and doing the ugly stuff in defence. Jacob Murphy, who has been lively, is looking to cause havoc inside the Hammers box but Rice produces a perfectly timed challenge.

West Ham have really come alive since scoring and now Jarrod Bowen is on the charge. Great defending by Dan Burn who keeps his composure and makes a crucial challenge. Corner to West Ham.

What do Newcastle have in their locker? We know they are missing two or three key players but they started well and now find themselves behind. We're about to learn a little bit more about the character of this team.

Dennis Ethan: The set-piece specialists take the lead at London Stadium.

Kris Jefferson: I swear Cresswell’s set-piece delivery is so underrated. Probably second best in the league behind Ward-Prowse.

Michail Antonio is taking a few hits for the team. He's down again requiring treatment.

Since the start of the 2014-15 Premier League season, no central defender has scored more goals in the competition than Craig Dawson (19).

    James Collins
Former West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle’s defensive line looked far too high. It’s a clever run from Craig Dawson, who snuck in and got a free header.

Why not start in a deeper position? I don’t get their fascination with keeping this high line.

Stoppage time goal hero last week at Leicester, Craig Dawson now has two in two games. Flying the flag for all the thirtysomething defenders.

And West Ham make Newcastle pay from that careless foul.

The free-kick is curled into the box by Aaron Creswell and Craig Dawson rises to nod it into the net.

Nothing much Martin Dubravka could do about that. Poor marking by Newcastle.

Newcastle look very composed at the back. Very different to earlier in the season. They certainly look more organised than West Ham's back line so far.

Miles, I thought Everton would do the same when we got our rich owner. Look how that's turned out.

  19. 'Joelinton influencing games now'published at 12:59 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2022

    West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

In his early days at Newcastle Joelinton looked lost. He was up there on his own and told to play as the number nine. He didn't fit the way they were trying to play.

He’s got a bit more time on the ball in central midfield. He can pick a pass and he’s big and strong. He’s making that role look easy and he’s influencing games now.
