    Huddersfield 0-0 Derby

Lovely one-two between Lewis O'Brien and Duane Holmes on the edge of the box.

Former Derby man Holmes tries to use the defender's body to curl one in the corner but his shot is blocked.

All Huddersfield here. Derby desperate for respite.

Sorba Thomas has been an assist machine for Huddersfield this season.

He puts in a cracking cross for Danny Ward, but, under pressure, the Terriers top scorer can only head wide from about 12 yards.

A blow for Cardiff, as captain Sean Morrison is forced off with injury.

Fellow centre-back Aden Flint is on in his place. He's an experienced Championship operator, so shouldn't weaken the Bluebirds considerably.

Richard Stearman spent 18 months at Huddersfield before joining the Rams last summer.

He couldn't even last 18 minutes tonight. And he could have few complaints about that red card - it was reckless.

    Huddersfield 0-0 Derby

Derby have done all right here after that early blow.

They have launched a couple of crosses into the box - the Rams would love a lead to protect but first things first, keep it tight at the back.

They do that well generally with 11 men - only four teams in the division have conceded fewer goals.

  6. Postpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2022

    Barnsley 0-0 Cardiff

Decent start from the hosts too at Oakwell where Josh Benson has tested Cardiff keeper Alex Smithies with a volley from the edge of the box. Still goalless though.

    Huddersfield 0-0 Derby

Derby have overcome plenty of obstacles so far this season, of course.

Here's another to add to the list.

Another chance for Huddersfield as Danny Ward connects with a far-post cross on the volley but can only steer it well wide.

    Huddersfield 0-0 Derby

Sorba Thomas' set-piece takes a slight deflection and creeps inches wide.

Lewis O'Brien fires on target after the corner works its way out to him but it's straight at Rams keeper Ryan Allsop.

    I spoke too soon.

Derby lose the ball 25 yards out and it's three-on-two for the Terriers.

Richard Stearman lunges in to a desperate challenge in an attempt to retrieve the situation but he's a bit high on Lewis O'Brien and it's a straight red.

There are fewer more picturesque grounds to watch football than the John Smith's Stadium - some of the views you can get of the surrounding greenery are breath-taking.

Nothing quite so breath-taking on the pitch so far - quiet start from both sides.

Huddersfield make one change for tonight's game from the side that drew 1-1 with Stoke on Friday night - but it's a notable one as former Derby man Duane Holmes comes in to face his former side.

Josh Koroma drops to the bench while deadline-day signings Carel Eiting and Jamal Blackman are also among the substitutes.

Derby's squad is already thin enough but they have been hit by injuries as well with Max Bird, Kamil Jozwiak and Colin Kazim-Richards all absent, so it's a very young bench for the Rams.

Teenager Luke Plange, sold on deadline day to Crystal Palace but remaining at Derby on loan for the rest of the season, starts up front.

Huddersfield XI: Nicholls, Toffolo, Pearson, Turton, Lees, Hogg, O'Brien, Sinani, Holmes, Thomas Ward.

Subs: Blackman, Pipa, High, Sarr, Eiting, Koroma, Rhodes.

Derby XI: Allsop, Byrne, Stearman, Davies, Buchanan, Ebosele, Sibley, Thompson, Knight, Lawrence, Plange.

Subs: Roos, Forsyth, Cashin, Bielik, Bardell, Ebiowei, Stretton.

    Barnsley v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

Poya Asbaghi hands a Barnsley debut to on-loan Watford man Domingos Quina as one of four changes to the side beaten by Bournemouth on Saturday.

Midfielder Amine Bassi, signed on loan from French side Metz, is on the bench for the struggling Tykes.

Cardiff make one change from their victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, with Will Vaulks replacing Joe Ralls in midfield.

Jordan Hugill continues in attack, with fellow new signing Uche Ikpeazu among the substitutes.

Barnsley XI: Collins, Andersen, Helik, Kitching, Vita, Styles, Benson, Gomes, Williams, Quina, Cole.

Subs: Walton, Leya Iseka, Morris, Moon, Palmer, Hondermarck, Bassi.

Cardiff XI: Smithies, McGuinness, Morrison, Ng, Doughty, Vaulks, Wintle, Doyle, Drameh, Watters, Hugill.

Subs: Phillips, Bagan, Flint, Ikpeazu, Collins, Pack, Davies.

Clearly, the task of overhauling a 21-point deduction has not been excitement enough for adventure junkies Derby - in recent weeks, they have given themselves mountains to climb within matches too.

Twice since the turn of the year - at Reading on 3 January and at home to Birmingham on Sunday - they have scored twice in the final five minutes to rescue 2-2 draws.

The Rams also scored twice in the final 20 minutes to beat Sheffield United and netted a late winner at Stoke in late December too.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, have dropped points at home in three 1-1 draws courtesy of late equalisers from Coventry, Swansea and Stoke - so is the stage already set?

    Barnsley v Cardiff (19:45 GMT)

Whichever way you look at it, it has been a dismal season for bottom of the table Barnsley.

Poya Asbaghi's side made two loan signings before the deadline - with midfielders Amine Bassi and Domingos Quina arriving from Metz and Watford respectively - but the jury's out on whether they can make the huge difference required to mount a great escape.

Things haven't been much rosier for 20th-placed Cardiff, though victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday has halted their slide.

Key striker Kieffer Moore left for Bournemouth on deadline day but Bluebirds boss Steve Morison has at least brought in Jordan Hugill and Uche Ikpeazu to help fill the gap in attack.

Championship play-off race.Image source, BBC Sport

A draw or victory tonight would lift Huddersfield - who are on an impressive unbeaten run spanning nine Championship matches - up to the dizzy heights of fifth place, although they will have played at least one game more than the rest of the top six.

Derby, meanwhile, would move within four points of safety with victory - effectively three points given the far superior goal difference they boast over their relegation rivals. What an achievement it would be if they survived despite a 21-point deduction.

But if they fail to win in Yorkshire, the Rams could drop back to the foot of the table if bottom side Barnsley beat Cardiff - a result, were it to happen, that would drag the 20th-placed Bluebirds firmly into the relegation mix too.
