It was another tough night for Wayne Rooney's Derby

That's as far as we go on what was a pretty successful St David's Day for the two Welsh clubs in EFL action.

Cardiff all-but secured their Championship status with a win over beleaguered Derby, while Newport held runaway League Two leaders Forest Green to a 1-1 draw despite playing the final few minutes with 10 men.

League One's table toppers Rotherham were also held to a draw, finishing 0-0 at Shrewsbury and second-placed Wigan beat Fleetwood 2-0 to strengthen their promotion bid and cut the gap on the Millers to seven points.

We'll be back with more EFL action on Friday, with a pair of Championship matches and one from League Two.

Hope you can join us then and thanks for your company this evening.

    Cheers!

Cardiff boss Steve Morison must be able to sign his name REALLY quickly.

No sooner is the game over than he's managed to put pen to paper on a one-year extension.

Victory over Derby tonight sent his side 16 points clear of the bottom three and he'll be looking towards next season now.

Defeat for Derby leaves them stuck on 21 points and eight points adrift of safety.

The administration-hit Rams have been deducted 21 points of course and it's now looking more and more likely that they're not going to be able to pull off the great escape.

Their fans will probably be more worried about the off-field uncertainty that leaves the club's future in a precarious position.

Cardiff's win moves them out of the bottom six and up to 18th.

Derby will definitely be devastated losing that game.

Going away with nothing, it's a long journey home, and you have far too much time to think about it.

It's both boxes that's costing them - they're not putting the ball in the net and not keeping it out.

Three massive points for Cardiff, another narrow defeat for Derby.

Sub Uche Ikpeazu won it for the home side with a close range finish and they're now 16 points clear of the bottom three.

The Rams have lost three on the bounce and they eight points adrift having played a game more than 21st-placed Reading.

Wayne Rooney's men host Barnsley on Saturday in an absolutely must-win game.

Strikers don't usually get away with that much contact on a defender.

Uche Ikpeazu's thrown Curtis Davies out the way, he's dragged him a little bit.

It all comes from Derby keeping the ball in play. Malcolm Ebiowei has to manage the game better there and let it go out.

No quicker had Leyton Orient taken the lead at Colchester in the fight for league survival match at the bottom of the table, the score swung entirely the other way in the space of four minutes.

Myles Kenlock and Owura Edwards get two goals for Colchester to give them a 2-1 lead with 11 minutes to go.

Antony Evans has finally made Bristol Rovers' man advantage pay, putting them 1-0 up against Barrow.

And over in Newport, the home fans have a nervous final few minutes ahead as James Clarke was sent off for a second yellow with his side 1-1 with Forest Green.

    Ah.

Derby don't clear their lines and the home side hoik it into the box through Pery Ng.

Curtis Davies feels he's fouled by Uche Ikpeazu but the ref says no dice and the goal stands.

The Middlesbrough man has three in six for Cardiff now.

Derby host fellow strugglers Barnsley on Saturday.

The Tykes have found some form from absolutely nowhere to record three wins from their past four.

If the Rams can afford to just take a point from this tonight they absolutely HAVE to win on Saturday.

Bluebirds defender Perry Ng's dipping long range shot forces Ryan Allsop into action.

    Shoot man!

Luke Plange is played in down the Rams left and Colin Kazim-Richards' run opens up a bit of room for him to get a shot off but he looks to go back outside instead and the chance goes.

That's Plange's last action as fellow youngster Malcolm Ebiowei takes his place up top.

  20. League Two updatepublished at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2022

We've had another goal at Broadfield Stadium, as Christopher Missilou has pulled Oldham back into it to make it 2-2 with Crawley. Remember, Oldham haven't lost since manager John Sheridan returned to the club in January as they look to turn around their season, quickly.

Also towards the bottom of the table, Leyton Orient have taken what could be a big lead against fellow strugglers Colchester through Ruel Sotiriou. The two teams started the match with just a point between them.
