  4. 'Rangers must reach very high level' - Van Bronckhorstpublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been giving his thoughts to BT Sport ahead of kick-off in Germany.

"Not the best memories here", he said. "We won 2-0 at home against them [in 1999]. Away, it was a bit more difficult. We conceded just before the end and lost on penalties.

"It’s a big test – they’re a Champions League worthy opponent. They’re very strong at home. It’s a good chance to show what we’re worth and how strong we are as a team. The level we have to reach tonight is very high.

"I think their last results – they lost in the cup and concede a lot of goals lately. When we have the chance to punish them, we have to do it.

"It’s a good feeling to be back in Europe tonight."

  5. Morelos must tread carefullypublished at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Former Liverpool and Juventus midfielder Emre Can, a sub at the weekend, is suspended for the hosts.

Alfredo Morelos, who has scored three in two games since returning from international duty, will need to be careful. The Rangers striker is a booking away from a ban.

  6. Dortmund chasing Bayern - againpublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Like Rangers, tonight's hosts sit second in their league.

The Bundesliga is 22 games in, with Dortmund six points behind Bayern Munich, who are going for 10 in a row.

The last of Dortmund's eight titles came in 2012.

Form has been up and down of late, with defeat to St Pauli in the cup and a 5-2 hammering at home from Bayer Leverkusen either side of away wins at Hoffenheim and Union Berlin.

No-one is under any illusions how difficult a game this will be for Rangers. They need to be at their best and need to come out the first leg still in the tie

  8. Major milestone for McGregorpublished at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is making his 100th European appearance this evening.

Just four of his previous 99 outings came during his stint at Hull City.

In those 95 games for Rangers, he's kept 40 clean sheets.

  9. Dortmund drop in after Champions League disappointmentpublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Rather than this tie being considered the round of 32, it has been rebranded as a play-off for the last 16, with all the group runners-up playing teams toppling out of the Champions League.

That's where Borussia Dortmund come from, having finished third, behind Sporting Lisbon on goal difference, in the top tier competition.

The Germans suffered damaging back-to-back defeats to section winners Ajax followed by a defeat in Portugal.

Group winners go straight into the round of 16, with teams finishing third, like Celtic and Leicester, entering the Conference League.

  10. How did Rangers get here?published at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

It's been a wee while, so here's a quick reminder of how Rangers got here.

Things got off to a rocky start, with a Champions League qualifying loss to Malmo, while a place in the Europa League was secured after an unconvincing struggle against Alashkert of Armenia.

Rangers then lost the first two group games before it all clicked with four points against Brondby and a home win over Sparta Prague, while the campaign ended with a 1-1 draw away to table-toppers Lyon.

In seasons gone by second place would see you straight into the last 32 of the Europa League but it's a bit different this time...

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Talking at yesterday's media conference, Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose said: "Rangers are a team that play as a unit with a few strong individual players. They’re a team with weapons. They've got pace and combine well on the wings."

  12. The wind is uppublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

The UK is not the only country dealing with wild winter weather, with Storm Ylenia currently gripping Germany.

The conditions don't look too bad on the telly, although the wind is playing havoc with BT Sport presenter Emma Dodds' long hair. No such problems for former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae, who is by her side on the pitch.

  13. Plenty of good memories to draw onpublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

So, what about the other matches?

There were two exciting 2-2 draws in the 1995/96 Champions League, but Rangers finished bottom of the group without a win after two heavy defeats to eventual winners Juventus.

Rangers saw off the Germans in the 1982/83 Uefa Cup, winning 2-0 in Glasgow after a goalless draw in the first leg.

And it was a similar story in 1966 when Rangers again earned a goalless stalemate away from home after a 2-1 win in Glasgow. That was en route to a narrow Cup Winners' Cup final defeat to Bayern Munich.

  14. Penalty heartbreak for Rangers in 1999published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

This is the ninth competitive match between these two.

Dortmund have won just one of the previous eight meetings and it was the most recent, with a last-minute Fredi Bobic goal forcing extra-time in the 1999/00 Uefa Cup.

Rangers had been protecting a 2-0 lead from the first leg at Ibrox but were eliminated on penalties, with current manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Arthur Numan and Claudio Reyna all failing to beat keeper Jans Lehmann from the spot.

  15. Covid restrictions hit landmark gamepublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

The 80,000-capacity Westfalenstadion, to the give the stadium its original name, is one of the most intimidating arenas in Europe and this just happens to be the 1000th match Borussia have played there since its opening in 1974.

Sadly, there will only be 10,000 spectators at the party due to local Covid restrictions.

There will be a few lucky Rangers fans in attendance, with 500 tickets allocated to the visitors.

  16. Haaland sits out again for Dortmundpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

The hosts go with the same XI from their weekend win at Union Berlin, so no place for Erling Haaland, which was expected, but must be considered a bonus for Rangers.

The star striker, missing a third match with an adductor problem, has hit 23 goals in 20 games for Dortmund so far this season.

  17. Big guns back for Rangerspublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

    Borussia Dortmund v Rangers (17:45)

Left-back Borna Barisic is the only man standing from the weekend win at Annan in the Scottish Cup.

Ryan Jack returns from injury after missing the win over Hibernian and Calvin Bassey is in central defence with Leon Balogun injured and fit-again Filip Helander not included in the European squad.

Aaron Ramsey is back on the bench after making his first Rangers start at Galabank.

Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and strikers Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe are not listed among the subs. Maybe we'll get an explanation for that later.
