From the first few minutes you could see Chelsea were determined to control this game and it's that sort of intensity their fans will be praying for in their Champions League second leg against Real Madrid coming up.

It could have been a much bigger victory if it wasn’t for Timo Werner hitting the woodwork and Fraser Forster’s acrobatic saves.

Southampton looked bewildered by it all.

They’ll need to be more alert for the rest of the season if they’re not to slip further down the table.

  3. 'Chelsea were super aggressive'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 0-6 Chelsea

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: "Congratulations to a very hot Chelsea team today. It was not the best moment to get them. They were super aggressive. We had a lack of everything. Such a team shows you your limits, especially when they are that aggressive.

"You always play as good as the opponent lets you play and they were very good counter-pressing and the quality with the speed. We could not close quick enough and were far away from competitive today. With the chances they had it could have been higher.

"We need to find a better way of defending in the next games. After this game the reaction is definitely that we have to turn up."

  4. Six in seven for Ings versus Spurspublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

Aston Villa v Tottenham (17:30 BST)

Danny Ings is back in the Villa side today after missing the 2-1 loss to Wolves because of the birth of his child and he has netted six goals in his last seven games against Spurs in all competitions.

Harry Kane has scored seven times in nine top-flight matches against Villa, including in all three of his league appearances at Villa Park.

  5. 'We gave an answer finally'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 0-6 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to BBC MOTD: "The performance changed, the commitment and the discipline. This is how we want to play and we gave an answer finally because you could see it on the scoreboard. It reflects the performance today which was very good.

"It is always a players' game but we try to prepare them as well as possible. We are always happy for players to manage the game and they did. You could see they were focused to play to the plan and we did it with concentration, commitment, hunger and of course with quality."

On Real Madrid: "It is a completely different game and opponent. The situation does not get easy. First of all it was necessary to do the job here. That will be a very difficult task and there is no change to it. We did what we wanted and that is the good news."

  6. 'It was one of those days'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 0-6 Chelsea

    Southampton

Southampton striker Che Adams: "It's not great. We let in easy goals which cost us massively. They were at it today and we weren't. It was one of those days.

"They are a good team. They are always going to find solutions for things we throw at them. We have to dust ourselves down and go again.

"We knew they would come back with a bounce. Today we just couldn't get near them. When their chances came today they took them. We conceded early in the second half and that killed us. We said at half time we wanted to keep it solid and not leave spaces. Fraser [Forster] played well but we couldn't help him.

"We had a few chances but again, they punished us with how clinical they were in front of goal.

"Everyone knows we weren't at it today. We have to take the positives from this game. There weren't many but everyone knows how we can play on our day."

  7. 'Extremely dangerous'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

Aston Villa v Tottenham (17:30 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Tottenham have got momentum now, while Aston Villa have lost all of theirs after suffering three defeats in a row.

Philippe Coutinho has been quiet of late, and Villa need to find a way of getting him involved more if they are going to trouble Tottenham.

A Spurs slip-up is always just around the corner, but when Harry Kane is playing the way he is, they are extremely dangerous.

    Prediction: 1-2

  8. 'We really believe in ourselves'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Arsenal 1-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's Enock Mwepu: "I'm glad we won today; we needed the three points, coming from six defeats is not easy. We really believe in ourselves, we have the right mentality in the group and we showed what we could do today.

"The gameplan was to win. The mentality and the confidence the coach has shown in us [is huge]. We believe in ourselves. We just want to play and win for the fans. The win gives us confidence and more hope for the next games. We have Tottenham next and we will believe we can win."

Arsenal messed up their chance to go above Tottenham with a home loss to Brighton so can Spurs capitalise and give themselves a three-point gap between them and their north London rivals in the fight for fourth - and the last of the Champions League places?

  11. 'We were hungry'published at 17:03 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 0-6 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to Sky Sports: "It was a very good performance and a well deserved win. It is a tough stadium to come to but we made it look easy. In possession we were very focused so it's a very good performance and an excellent result.

"Straight away we looked forcused and determined to turn things around. We were hungry in challenges and we were always dangerous. We created a lot of chances to decide the match very early.

"We wanted to play with the same attitude but we have a lot of matches in the legs so we managed the game after that. It is easier when you lead than when you are down but it was a good mentality."

On Timo Werner: "He could have scored more. He had huge chances and a lot of chances. It was his favourite position against an opponent we knew we could find spaces in behind. It was for him to make a statement out of it which he did. He could have scored more but we are happy with his strong performance."

On Romelu Lukaku's fitness: "He was not in training yesterday. It was too much pain. It is not much time as we leave the country on Monday so I will have to wait."

  12. Postpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Southampton 0-6 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Mason Mount: "It gives us confidence to get back winning and have that feeling. I said before that every game is a final and that started today. We need to carry this on.

"I think you saw a frustrated performance. One that had a lot of fire in and we knew it we kept going and got a few more the game would be dead. You saw in the first half how much that meant to us.

"Some performances are not as good as others. We had a little dip after the international break. We have to keep going in every game now. We won't settle for this."

Martin Odegaard wins it in the middle. He skips past one challenge but his pass to Bukayo Saka on the left is quite heavy.

Saka has to re-adjust his position and scuffs the shot. Another chance! It's getting nervy for Brighton.
