  3. 'Hugo saved us in the game'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min speaking to Sky Sports: "We were struggling and Hugo [Lloris] saved us in the game. He's the winner today and I'm happy to have this captain alongside me."

Hugo Lloris: "It is the first time under Antonio Conte that we conceded so many chances. It was a tough battle as we expected; we started well, but they started to increase their intensity. We couldn't match it, we lost duels and conceded many chances. After the storm, we took control; players like Kulu [Dejan Kulisevski], Harry [Kane], Sonny make the difference.

Son Heung-min: "We scored an early goal but we knew they are a tough team with quality players. We struggled, but sometimes when we have tough times, we need to stick together. That is what we did; we knew we'd have more space second half and we knew we could do better. Kulu's early goal killed the game."

  4. 'The scoreline was harsh'published at 20:14 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is reality, we've been beaten 4-0 and that is tough to take; it hurts. But the story of the game is a head-scratcher for sure; the scoreline is harsh. If you look at our first half performance, I couldn't ask for more except us taking our chances.

"We were very dominant; the goal we've conceded is poor. Outside of that, I thought it was the best we've played under us, and if we'd been winning two or three one, nobody would have had any complaints.

"We were aggressive, we counter-pressed, we created chances, we were the better footballing team. The challenge was maintaining that; we've been speaking about that 90-minute performance.

"Second half, they've made it about our back line and punished us with pure quality Tottenham were ruthless, but I'm really disappointed in the second, third and fourth goals. They could have been dealt well with good defensive play."

  5. 'We deserve to be in the race for the Champions League'published at 20:10 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We know the difficulty of playing Villa away, this stadium had a great atmosphere and I want to thank our fans because they were not in the same number but they pushed us from the start to the end - so to give them this type of satisfaction is great for us. We work to improve the players but also to make our fans satisfied about their team and that happened today. We are pleased - not an easy game but we showed resilience in the first half when Villa tried to push a lot and put a lot of pressure on us. Every time we tried to play the ball and have a chance we did score.

"To be resilient is important if we want to be a top team, in every game there are moments when the opponent can create difficulty and if we are not strong you will never win something or do something important. We are going in this aspect, I'm very happy because I have a group of players who want to show me that they will improve in many aspects. When you have this you have to be happy to work with them and to try to do something important at the end of the season. Seven games to go and we are showing that we are deserving to stay in the race for a place in the Champions League.

"Hugo [Lloris] was amazing - we are talking about a keeper that has won a World Cup and everything with France, the captain of his national team and us. Important for us because of his experience, today we needed him and he answered very well.

"We created a good chemistry between ourselves and we can speak about Son [Heung-min], but don't forget Harry [Kane] and we have players on the bench who are important in Lucas [Moura] and Steven Bergwijn. We need to continue to work with this application and intensity and desire because the club deserve much better than fighting for fifth, sixth or seventh. I like to be competitive."

  7. 'I'm very proud'published at 20:01 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham hat-trick scorer Son Heung-min speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I'm so happy to get three points, it was a hard afternoon. The first goal was important, early goal to change the game.

"Without Hugo [Lloris] we were probably 3-1 down in the first half, Hugo saved us today and it was a big performance from our captain when we needed him and he turned up saving every ball. He was unbelievable.

"We were unhappy at half-time, we talked tactically about what to do better, we knew we could do better than the first half. So in the second half we showed personality, it's not easy to come here and play amazing football because Villa are a good team with quality players but in the second half we scored early again and changed the game and I'm very proud that we changed the game like that.

"We knew about the other results of Arsenal and Manchester United - when we did the warm-up the fans were celebrating so we knew but we don't want to focus on that result. They are playing their game and we're playing ours so we don't want to focus on other teams because it's different. We're in different situations, we have to focus our performances and be calm, cool and we did that today."

  8. 'The story of the game wasn't a 4-0 game'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 9 April 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's tough - the scoreline is harsh on us, but it's the reality and we have to accept that. I have to accept it - I'm responsible. The story of the game certainly wasn't a 4-0 game.

"It's the first time in football I've gone off at half-time 1-0 down and been really happy and proud, we were magnificent, we didn't take our chances but at half-time I said if we can continue this I have no doubt we get back into the game. The second half it flipped, Spurs' quality players made it about our backline and they punished us really heavily.

"Analysing the first goal, a long straight ball we could've defended that better, they got a bit of luck but they're ruthless in front of goal. To be 1-0 down at half-time was against the run of play, we were outstanding and the chances we've created against a top side is enough to win two or three games.

"We asked them to maintain that at half-time and we tried, we talk about defending the area around 18-yard box and Spurs punished us heavily in that area.

"We've got time - I don't know if that's a good thing, you want the next game quickly after a defeat like that which stings but I've got to pick the players up and be ready for the next game. I want us to remember that first half, we have a lot to learn and defensively in the second half we have even more to learn."

Mark Burt: They need to beef up the gutless red card rules. An ultra cynical, dangerous and spiteful challenge from Ashley Young. Should be off for that.

Jack Lovatt: Young is lucky that's only a yellow, horrible challenge with the sole aim of taking Kane out.
