Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Qatar have upped their game and injected more pace into their attacks.

Will they be able to sustain that?

What a lovely save from Mendy. Ali's strike was just sliding in.

    Qatar 0-2 Senegal

Put your foot through it. Almoez Ali finally gets a sniff of goal for Qatar but his effort, which is sneaking towards the bottom left corner, is touched away by the diving Edouard Mendy.

Good save but if that shot had a smidgen more pace I'm not sure he'd have got there.

Hassan with a good strike form 25 yards out, that's not far away. Mendy was scurrying and he is not happy at all. The ball bobbled and Hassan caught it well.

That goes down as speculative but it's not that far away from Abdelkarim Hassan. The Qatar defender zings one from miles out. It just goes wide but it raises the decibel levels again.

    Qatar 0-2 Senegal

Akram Afif, Qatar's most creative and exciting player so far has come so deep to try and get involved that he is now stood in the right-back position.

It's too easy for Senegal. They won't set the world alight but they do have some quality players in their side. No pressure on the ball from Qatar even though they are 2-0 down.

    Qatar 0-2 Senegal

Senegal are stroking the ball around with ease now. Zero pressure on the ball.

Qatar's coach Felix Sanchezmight need to look at changing personnel or tactics or both, soon.

So of course they win a free-kick in a decent position and then only stick four or five men in the box with the whole Senegal team back to defend.

  11. Postpublished at 54 mins

    Qatar 0-2 Senegal

Qatar have no choice but to press higher up the pitch now.

It won't be easy, though, as they've been pinned back by Senegal from the first whistle.

Qatar have only had 19 final third entries compared to Senegal's 46.

Ismail Jakobs picks up a yellow card as well as an assitst. Looks like he caught Qatar's Ismaeel Mohammad with a flailing arm there.

A great ball in, but made even better by the run from Diedhiou.

He gets across his man at the near post and flicks it into the corner.

A terrible start to the second half for Qatar.

That's a very good header from Diedhiou. It's a really difficult skill if you're going beyond the near post. He just bent his right shoulder and guided it off his head into the far corner.

There is pace on the ball and direction on the header. The whole bench is celebrating, they kind of know they are going through.

    Famara Diedhiou

Great goal from the former Bristol City man.

Ismail Jakobs whips the ball in from the right and Diedhiou gets across the near post and arcs his neck to power a header past Meshaal Barsham in the Qatar goal.

Sunset fell just before half-time in Doha which means it's time for Maghrib prayers.

The room at Al Thumama was jam packed at the interval, no space to get in.

You can clearly see that Qatar have worked on being more defensively organised but it's when they get possession, they don't really know what to do with it. Then they are working off the cuff and hoping Afif does something.
