    Need a recap?

You can watch how all the big moments unfolded as the Netherlands and Senegal progressed in a dramatic conclusion to Group A.

  3. Dutch delight and Senegal second

What a victory for Senegal over Ecuador.

You can read all about how Kalidou Koulibaly's nerveless volley sent them into the World Cup's knockout stages for only the second time in their history in our match report.

Meanwhile, In-form Cody Gakpo scored again as the Netherlands finished top of Group A, ending Qatar's miserable involvement at their home World Cup with a third consecutive defeat.

  4. Wales and England up next

    BBC One

Wales and England go head to head in a mouth-watering final match in Group B with all to play for in the World Cup.

Robert Page's Wales team must beat England by four goals on Tuesday to stand any chance of progressing to the last 16 in a game that will be broadcast on BBC One and Radio 5 Live.

We will have all the build-up on the BBC Sport website and 5 Live from 17:30 GMT, while coverage on BBC One begins at 18:00.

USA also play Iran later in Group B in another must-win encounter.

  5. Post update

    FT: Senegal 2-1 Ecuador

    Senegal players

Senegal's win means it is the third time the reigning Africa Cup of Nations holders have reached the knockout phase of the World Cup.

Both previous occasions were by Nigeria, when they reached the last 16 in 1994 and 2014.

That result also represents the first time that Senegal have claimed back-to-back World Cup victories.

  6. 'African resurgence continues'

Ismaila Sarr of Senegal celebrates after the 2-1 win during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group A match between Ecuador and Senegal at Khalifa International Stadium on November 29, 2022 in Doha, Qatar

Seth Gogo Egoeh: Congratulations to Senegal. They've made Africa proud.

Sho: Absolutely incredible from Senegal. The African resurgence continues and we love it!

Aleks Yakubssohn: Feel very sorry for Ecuador, they did the hard work of exposing shallowness of the hosts and limitedness of Netherlands, but they slacked a bit when it mattered most and had to make way for the team that saved its best for last.

  7. 'Solid from Netherlands'

    FT: Netherlands 2-0 Qatar

Former Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong, speaking on ITV: "It was quite a solid performance from the Netherlands. They did what they had to do to finish top of the group, got the goals and kept a clean sheet.

"It was a clinical performance and it's good for the atmosphere."

  8. 'Gakpo is the real deal'

    FT: Netherlands 2-0 Qatar

Former England midfielder Joe Cole, speaking on ITV: "Cody Gakpo would have gone into this tournament and been on the databases of all the big clubs. I know there are scouts watching him and he's going to be high on everyone's wish list. He looks like the real deal.

"He effects the game and players who do that are so valuable."

    Cody Gakpo
  9. Caicedo's minor consolation

    FT: Senegal 2-1 Ecuador

Moises Caicedo became the youngest player to score for Ecuador in a World Cup match (21y 27d), while his goal ended Enner Valencia’s run of scoring Ecuador’s last six goals in the competition.

A small consolation to the Brighton midfielder as he boards his flight home from Qatar.

  10. Watch: Highlights as Netherlands win Group A

  11. 'Gapko making more headlines'

    FT: Netherlands 2-0 Qatar

    Maz Farookhi

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Netherlands could have scored more, I think Louis van Gaal would probably have wanted more. Steven Berghuis had a third goal ruled out by VAR for a handball in the build-up and also hit the upright.

The headlines will be all about Cody Gakpo again, though, after his third goal of this World Cup. Qatar finish with zero points.

  12. Post update

I don't expect Howard Wilkinson has been doing the scouting on Senegal, Phil.

According to Gary Lineker, the former Leeds boss told Sir Bobby Robson, that their game against Cameroon at Italia 90 was pretty much a bye and we all know how that went.

  13. 'Senegal not to be taken lightly'

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer in Doha

A smattering of applause in the media centre here at Ahman bin Ali Stadium as the final whistle goes and African champions Senegal go into the last 16.

This makes them England's likely opponents if they can complete the job here against Wales tonight and Senegal are not a side to be taken lightly even without their great talisman Sadio Mane.

Chelsea pair of keeper Edouard Mendy and the match winner against Ecuador Kalidou Koulibaly have great experience and coach Aliou Cisse is a shrewd operator. Whoever plays them faces a tough task.

    Senegal celebrate
  14. Post update

    FT: Senegal 2-1 Ecuador

Kalidou Koulibaly’s winning goal made him Senegal’s oldest goalscorer at the World Cup (31y 162), while he is their first ever scorer at the tournament to be aged over 30.

It was also Koulibaly’s first ever goal for the Lions of Teranga in 67 appearances in all competitions.

Don't think it could have come at any better time.

    Koulibaly
  15. England-Senegal in last 16?

As things stand England will meet Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday.

A win for Gareth Southgate's side later this evening against Wales will guarantee top spot in Group B.

  16. 'Senegal showed their qualities'

    FT: Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

You could see the physical, mental tiredness of the Ecuador players as they drop to their knees, many of them crying as they drop to their knees. They realise the opportunity and the progress to the next round was in their own hands and they couldn't live up to it but credit to Senegal.

They weren't good against Qatar in the last game but they showed their qualities in this game against Ecuador. Many, myself included, thought that Ecuador would have enough to progress.

    Ecuador out
  17. Koulibaly strikes to send Senegal through

Watch the moment Kalidou Koulibaly scores the winning goal for Senegal against Ecuador, earning them second place in Group A at the World Cup.

  18. 'Senegal deserved the win'

    FT: Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

They were asked the question at the start of the game and they answered that. They weren't good in the first 15 minutes but then they got going and they were the better team on the night. They deserved the win, three set pieces deciding it. They had more of an idea, more of a purpose.

They're into the next round and they'll be watching later to see who they'll be playing.

  19. THE FINAL GROUP A TABLE

    Netherlands win the group.

    Senegal progress.

    Ecuador are out.

Qatar are officially the worst performing men's World Cup hosts ever.
