Ricky Mason: I don't agree with the Netherlands look strong argument and the bring on the French comments, the 07/08 Derby County team could make it out of Group A.

Stuart: How/why is Sarr still playing for Watford in the Championship? Should be at a higher level for sure.

  2. 'Perfect game for Depay to build fitness'published at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    HT: Netherlands 1-0 Qatar

Former Netherlands midfielder Nigel De Jong, speaking on ITV: "I think this is the perfect match for Memphis Depay to get his fitness back, there hasn't been much resistance from Qatar.

"With the movements he made, little one-twos, you can see how important he is to this team. I'd be starting him in the knockout games, all day."

No African side made it to the knockout stages of the World Cup four years ago. Senegal look on course to make it one from one so far at this tournament which would be a massive boost for football fans across the continent.

Ecuador haven’t turned up here, they’ve been surprisingly poor, nervy and lethargic. Senegal wasted early chances but in the absence of Sadio Mane another flair player, Ismaila Sarr, has stepped up.

Not sure I’ve ever seen such a cool penalty at a World Cup. Passing it into the bottom corner takes courage. Aliou Cisse the Senegal boss will be delighted with what he’s seen so far but still work to do.

    HT: Netherlands 1-0 Qatar

Netherlands have done the bulk of their attacking down the left - although it was their right winger, Gakpo, who scored the goal.

He drifted over to the left to pick up the ball, run at the Qatari defence and fire home.

A menace all over the pitch so far.

    HT: Netherlands 1-0 Qatar

Former England midfielder Joe Cole, speaking on ITV: "The finish from Gakpo was exceptional because the ball was just getting away from him. He's been the most impressive player on the pitch."

Cody Gakpo scored his three goals at this tournament with a header (versus Senegal), his left foot (versus Ecuador) and right foot (versus Qatar).

At the 2018 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Edinson Cavani were the only players to achieve the same feat.

The only other Dutch player to do so at a World Cup was Wesley Sneijder in 2010. (Via Nielsen's Gracenote)

Just have a look at 10 Senegal shots in purple (with the penalty in gold), compared to just two from Ecuador.

Senegal also lead on xG by a huge margin, 1.4 to 0.09.

Cody Gakpo with a lovely finish, his third goal in as many group games. For much of the first half it's been like a training exercise for the Dutch, their attack against the Qatar defence.

Louis van Gaal would prefer another goal or two to reflect his side's dominance, though.

All going swimmingly well for the Dutch.

There's been a real hush around Al Bayt since the opening goal.

Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo's asking price keeps on rocketing.

I don't remember Edouard Mendy touching the ball in open play which is a sad indictment of this game for Ecuador really. Two shots, zero on target.

Senegal have got a real spring in their step now. Ecuador have been flat. It feels like they put so much energy into the previous two games. They have barely laid a glove on Senegal.

A little bit of afters from Enner Valencia and Youssouf Sabaly, sees the Ecuador man go down clutching his knee.

Replays show there's nothing in that other than a huge bucket of gamesmanship. Ahem.

Ecuador are all over the place at the back. A quick break down the left almost sees Iliman Ndiaye presented with a great chance to add a second for Senegal in the first of six added minutes at the end of the half.

Massive moment for Ismaila Sarr and he was as cool you like. A slow stuttering run up., he watched Galindez. He waited for as long as he could but it wasn't long enough.

He was just left moving to one side as Sarr rolled it into the other. They've deserved this, they've been the better side in this first half. They wouldn't have got a better chance than that. Finally they have taken one.

The whole bench ran over to celebrate and it just felt like a release of pressure for them. They've got their noses in front now.

With Ronaldo moving to pastures new away from Man Utd, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Man Utd weren't sniffing around at Cody Gakpo as a replacement. Fits the Ten Hag bill. Eredivisie & Dutch. PSV financial troubles looming. Actually, sounds too sensible for Man Utd. Nevermind.

As a Sheffield United supporter I'd like to complain about the lack of specific references to Illiman N'Diaye. Simply not good enough. I need to know exactly how he's doing, roughly every 5 mins.

Hincapie is late, it's just a touch and then he bundles Sarr over. It was clumsy from Ecuador from the start, the long ball come in and they get it all wrong. He completely wipes Sarr out. Senegal have deserved this over the first 45 minutes or so.
