  1. That's all folks

Not the entertainment we were after tonight, but England are still in charge of their own destiny.

The World Cup fate of the Three Lions and Wales will be decided in a final group game in Al Rayyan on Tuesday.

Before that, though, we have some more fun and games involving Argentina amongst others. Join us again tomorrow for four more matches, starting at 10am with Tunisia v Australia and ending with a must-win game for Lionel Scaloni's side against Mexico.

    Night all.

  2. 'Rome wasn't built in a day'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I wasn't getting that high when England beat Iran and I'm not that low after today.

The performance was a slight concern, but it's OK. Rome wasn't built in a day.

  3. Post update

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

More from Gareth Southgate: "Of course I want our fans to go home happy but unfortunately we couldn’t do that. People are going to react how they are going to react. The objective is to qualify and we have three games to do it.

"We have to stay calm in this moment. There will be external noise and we will have another layer of that I'm sure."

  4. 'Not sure the booing was aimed at us'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

England manager Gareth Southgate said in the post match news conference: "Were we booed off? I’m not sure if that was aimed at us. Personally I am really pleased we had the application of the players. A really tough opponent.

"To come off the high of the other day and find the same quality was always going to be a challenge.

"I thought we controlled the game really well. Our two centre backs were absolutely outstanding with the ball. Yes, we lacked a bit of zip and quality in the final third.

"But we had to show another sign of ourselves without the ball. To be a successful team in the tournament you have to show a lot of faces.

"I am sure there will be a lot of noise but not a lot of teams get nine points in the group. The players were very down and disappointed but I told them that isn’t how it is going to be over the next few days."

  5. 'I am not unhappy'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

More from England boss Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "The inability to open them up is because they defended really well. They had 11 men who worked their socks to protect the goal and when we did have those little moments of small windows of openings we didn't produce quite the right quality to open them up.

"We are playing in conditions that are taking a lot of players and to maintain the tempo is not easy. They had the same problem. They started with a lot of high pressure and then sunk into a low block. I am not unhappy. I am sure, because that is the way that it is, there will an adverse reaction to what has happened but these are a difficult team and as we've seen in this tournament there a lot of results that aren't straightforward and I knew this game would be as it was tonight because of the strength of the opponent and the way they've defended. The players are a bit down but I said I'm not down. We had to defend a load of corners and we have to show resilience. It is a game you can lose if your mentality is not right."

  6. 'The most important thing was to not lose'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England captain Harry Kane on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a game that we wanted to win and wanted to finish top of the group tonight pretty much but it was a tough game. They are a well organised and athletic team and they caused us some problems as well. We are really happy with the clean sheet and the point puts us in a strong position going into the last game. We know we can be more clinical, it was probably the opposite from the first game. We'll go away and look at the positives and negatives.

"Both teams had good spells in the game. In the first half especially we probably didn't get our pressure right. We re playing really good, though teams, who are fighting for their World Cup lives and we have to respect that. The most important thing was to not lose today. If win on Tuesday we top the group.

"Harry [Maguire] put in a fantastic performance. Whenever he puts the Three Lions badge on it brings out the best in him. He had a fantastic game today and he did against Iran too. I am really happy for him, he's had some tough moments in the last year or two but he's shown his quality today and it was a really important clean sheet."

  7. 'We didn't have zip'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV:

"Exactly the sort of game I thought it would be. Really tough, good opponent, very athletic. I knew it would be difficult to replicate the high of the other performance against Iran. Pleased with how they applied themselves, quality in final third could've been better but the opponent kept asking questions and we just couldn't open up with a clear cut chance.

"A bit of zip, we didn't have zip. But this is tournament football, we're not going to roll through a tournament and sweep through without having nights like this to deal with."

On why Phil Foden didn't play: "We thought it was the right thing to keep the team from the start. The wide players we went with Marcus [Rashford] and Jack [Grealish] instead of Phil [Foden]. We thought Jack would keep the ball well and get the ball up the pitch and we thought Marcus' speed would help us get up the pitch."

"Totally different game, so pleased with the way we played from the back. They make it difficult to build and our two centre backs I don't think people appreciate how good they are. They dictated play tonight."

A good point? "For me - it puts us in a strong position in terms of qualification. If we win our last game we win the group. The objective is to get out of the group and we've done that in two games in the past two tournaments - we can't expect to do that all the time."

Harry Kane fitness: "Not been able to assess post-game but has got through the game fine and his link and hold up play was important for us."

  8. Post update

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a point gained for England.

Ironically it is a better point for England than USA.

  9. 'I am happy with our mentality'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am not frustrated. We've had to show a different side to ourselves tonight and I am actually happy with the mentality of the team. To come on the back of the such a comfortable win it is very difficult to find that sort of level again. We played an opponent tonight who make it difficult to get through their first two lines of defence, they are really athletic. I thought we controlled the game, our two centre backs with the ball were outstanding. We lacked a little bit of zip in the final third tonight."

  10. 'A 50-50 game'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

USA captain Tyler Adams on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm not sure if we deserved to win. It was probably a 50-50 game in the end. They had some chances and so did we but we competed really well and we showed a lot of our quality. The job is nowhere done. We have to face a quality team against Iran. We need to be 100% mentally focused.

"It was 100% like playing a Premier League, if not a little bit more demanding. The quality of these players is unbelievable. We respect them a lot and I hope we continue to gain respect from games like that."

  11. 'Foden is a superb player'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

More from England boss Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Phil Foden is fine. We've got some very good forwards that we can bring into the game. In the wide areas we decided on Jack [Grealish] and Marcus [Rashford] instead of Phil because we thought their different attributes were what would help us get over the line. They weren't able to find that missing spark but we know Phil is a super player and whichever one I didn't put on, if we didn't score, we were going to get asked about which one we didn't put on."

  12. 'Maguire won every header'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Micah Richards

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We have to take the positives. it was a deflating performance but Harry Maguire did well against Iran and he won absolutely every header today. He was commanding and stepped out when he could.

    Maguire was England's best player.

  13. 'A big point'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England defender Kieran Tripper speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "You have to take pride in clean sheets and in tournament football we know it is very important. It is a big point in our group. Both teams tried to win the game and both had chances and I think a point is a fair result. Now we just have to recover and review the game and fully focus on the next battle against Wales.

"In the final third we weren't quite at it. In the first half we got in those final third areas and then it was just the final ball but again it is something we can review another day. It is a massive point.

"We know how big a battle it will be against Wales and we have to go into that game with the winning mentality and try and get the three points. That is what we want to do in every game but we know it is going to be a big battle. We need to be mentally and physically ready."

  14. 'Foden only considered for wide role'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Judging by Gareth's comments there and reading between the lines he doesn't consider Phil Foden in another position than the wide position. That was the direct choice. Is it Rashford or Foden? Is it Grealish or Foden? Not can I stick him in where Mount is? It is just not a consideration in this side.

Anon: Tuned in from New Zealand to watch a truly predictable and tactically inept performance. Southgate was never the one for me. After the Euro 2020 final, you thought the FA would have made a change and appointed a world class manager.

If England are to really capitalise on this new generation, a manager with a positive, winning mentality needs to be appointed. Question is, who wants the job?

  16. 'A really solid performance'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

USA midfielder Christian Pulisic talking in the post match news conference: "A really solid performance from the team. A draw not the worse thing but there were stretches of the game where we showed dominance.

"We battled toe-to-toe with a very solid team but we have a lot of work to do.

"I thought it was a really good performance from us."

Anon: Watching from Spain here where they cannot believe the quality England are leaving on the bench. Would Guardiola prefer Mount over Foden? Would Guardiola prefer Sterling over Grealish? (The clue is in who Man City bought and who they sold in the transfer market!)

Would Klopp prefer Trippier to Alexander-Arnold? Three world class players ignored by a - let’s be honest - manager who is decent but not world class.Guardiola and Klopp clearly know better and England are hampered by a manager who is nowhere near their level.

It’s a shame because we actually have a few world class players for once. Southgate just needs to play them (or at least put them on when England are creating nothing!).

  18. 'Southgate struggles to change a game'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Micah Richards

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth is right about the mentality of the players. It was good.

You're not going to win every game by four goals, of course you're not. I don't agree with the substitutions he made.

If there is one criticism of Gareth Southgate, it is when he needs to change a game.

  19. 'We pride ourselves on clean sheets'

    FT: England 0-0 USA

More from England defender Harry Maguire on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a good battle. Obviously I prefer it when we're 4-0 up like against Iran, it is easier then. It was a challenging game, they caused us little problems. We knew we had to defend the box well and we had a lot of corners to defend. That is why I'm in the team, to defend the goal and we did that well. This team has a great record of keeping clean sheets. It is something we work on and take pride in. It is disappointing not to score or win the game, but I'm sure we'll improve for the future."
