England's loss to the USA at the 1950 tournament remains one of, if not the biggest shock in World Cup history.

An American team featuring a postman, a mill worker and a funeral director beat an England team - who were favourites to win the tournament - 1-0 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, thanks to a goal from Joe Gaetjens.

It was the second group game both had played and resulted in England failing to reach the knock-out rounds, with Spain taking the one qualifying spot available.

Back in 2018, stats data company Gracenote used their database and boffins and whatever to work out that the Americans had only a 9.5% chance of winning that game 72 years ago, which is the lowest percentage any winning side at a World Cup had going in to a game.

Interestingly, Gracenote have since decided that the Saudi Arabia win over Argentina on Tuesday trumps the USA's over England.

  2. Win and they're throughpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    England v USA (19:00 GMT)

It was pretty much the perfect start for England four days ago against Iran.

Traditionally slow starters, England flew out of the blocks (well, after an injury-impacted 20-odd minutes) to smash their opponent for six.

Bellingham was brilliant, Saka was superb, Sterling silky, with Rashford and Grealish adding the icing and cherry.

It means they come into this evening's game full of confidence and knowing a win will take them through to the knockout rounds.

Tonight's opponent, though, have a bit of history with upsetting England's apple cart...
