  1. 'If you can't win, don't lose and stay in control of group'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

England defender Harry Maguire on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We set our standards and we go into every match wanting to win but this is the World Cup and there are tough games against tough teams. They were a difficult opposition and they played really well at times.

"We probably weren't at our best and we can improve. When you're not at our best you don't get beat and stay in control of the group.

"Credit to the boys out there, we had to dig in at times and we did that and I know we want to win every game, and I'm sure the fans want to see lots of goals, but sometimes that isn't possible and when it isn't you don't concede goals and we did that well."

  2. 'Two performances a million miles apart'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

England got the attacking flair in the first game and the defensive solidity in the second game and if you put those together it is a good performance but it just felt a million miles apart.

Heads in hands, groans and flat fans’ post-match reviews - that’s the slightly-deflated mood at the full-time whistle at Jude Bellingham’s youth club.

The most excited rush was for the toilets at half-time at Stourbridge FC, West Midlands.

Millie Rogers (pictured top), first team women’s striker for the club for two seasons, thinks a few changes in selection would help going forward.

She would rest Harry Kane and start both Phil Foden and Jack Grealish to freshen up the attack in the next game against Wales.

It’s far from doom and gloom though - Jason Taylor (pictured bottom), the facilities manager here - ordered 250 gallons of extra beer [about 2,000 extra pints] for this weekend because The Glassboys are at home tomorrow too and he’s pleased with the support for the club from its players and fans turning out in force tonight to watch.

“The atmosphere has been lovely, we’ve had 178 people in tonight,” he said.

Big concern is that if the US could finish we'd have lost that comfortably. On another day we won't be so lucky.

    Stuart, York

Normal England service is resumed. I was worrying that I might get a bit excited by them this World Cup. Phew!

    Anon

We have the players in the squad to make a real impact at this World Cup. Unfortunately we have a manager who hasn't a clue what to do with them. That's the issue we had at the Euro final and it's still an issue.

  5. 'An opportunity missed'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

Former USA international Stuart Holden on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am chipper. We feel really good about that match. I thought the USA would go on and win the game in the second half. I was really happy with how we pressed England.

"We are the third youngest team of the tournament. I thought Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams played really well. It is still the same challenge for USA: Beat Iran and go through. I would have liked us to go for it in the last 10 minutes because we had nothing to lose in this game. That is what you saw from the young USA game. Americans back home will be proud that we went toe-to-toe with you guys.

"What the game highlighted from a negative point of front is that still don't have a centre forward. It felt like we missed an opportunity to beat you guys when you weren't at your best."

  6. 'Grealish gave England a different dimension'published at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The Jordan Henderson change was about know-how. He has a lot of experience. You can bring him in and you don't mind that because we were getting over-run in midfield.

If you are going to make that change, fine, but you can bring Phil Foden on at the same time.

You have got the stability of Jordan Henderson but you've got the attacking talent on Foden who can get on the ball and make a difference.

Grealish came on and he made a difference. He wasn't amazing but he gave them a different dimension and that is what England needed.

If anyone thought that England could win the World Cup this performance highlights that we won't. Can't beat a well organised side and the manager sticks with players who performed well in the past and not the in-form players in his squad.

    Bob

We need Southgate to be proactive, this is a short World Cup we need players who are active there is no time to wait for players to start acting. Southgate does not trust his bench.

    Umer

How can you actually go from a 6-2 win, to that in four days? Was there an argument at the camp? Someone nicked Luke Shaw's hair gel?

    FT: England 0-0 USA

USA kept a clean sheet against a European nation in the World Cup for the first time since they won 1-0 against England in 1950. They had gone 18 such games without one before today.

England had just eight shots in this game, only attempting fewer in two World Cup matches on record since 1966: six vs the Republic of Ireland in 1990 and seven vs Poland in 1986.

  9. 'Baffling that Mount played 90 mins'published at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

When England were making the first substitutions I had Mason Mount down to come off. It just didn't come off.

That doesn't make him a bad player, it happens.

It was baffling that he stayed on for the 90 minutes. It was strange.

  10. 'A massive mistake not to bring Foden on'published at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We talk about creativity, who is the first player that comes to mind?

    It is Phil Foden.

Mason Mount didn't have his greatest game today and I don't want to blame on him but it was a game where we couldn't get the rotations going and get the passing quick enough, and we had one of our best talented players on the bench. I couldn't understand it.

It is not about one player making the difference but how many times do we see him, week in week out, get in those little pockets and make something out of nothing.

For him to not come onto the pitch tonight was a massive mistake.

Anon: So can we please not blow this out of proportion? Anyone would think we’d lost 5-0. Nobody will be delighted with that but let’s not be quite so English-doom-and-gloom, eh? We’re still on course to qualify, and that’s all that matters.

Anon: To be fair, we are pretty much guaranteed to go through, and a draw with wales secures top spot in the group. In Southgate we trust.

  12. Postpublished at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

England have had 12 goalless draws at the World Cup, the most of any nation in the history of the World Cup. Meanwhile, this was the USA's first ever goalless draw at the World Cup.

The Three Lions have never beaten the USA at the World Cup (D2 L1), only facing Brazil (four games) more often in the World Cup without winning.

One of those records you can accept, the other... not so much.

Harry Maguire was the standout player for England for his defensive interceptions.

That sums it up. It wasn't great.

  14. 'We weren't ruthless enough'published at 21:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England defender Harry Maguire speaking to ITV: "Wasn't our best - it's a point and puts us in a strong position in the group. They're a good team that play at high tempo. We had to work hard and we could've nicked it at the end. We could've been a bit more clinical. We'll take the positives but there's things we need to work on.

"These games are tough. They're all top teams playing in this World Cup, USA are a good team. We weren't ruthless enough in the final third, didn't execute the final pass well enough. We have good forwards so I'm sure we'll be back next game."

On USA: "The lads put us under pressure. We dug in and got the clean sheet. We know the position in the group and know we stay in control in the group. Unfortunate not to win tonight but we look forward to the next game."

Josh: How much do we have to pay Southgate to actually start attacking players? That game was crying out for Grealish and Foden from the start, not one of them half way through the second half.

Mark: Southgate just puts the handbrake on the team. Mount & Kane completely anonymous but still best young player Foden and back up striker Wilson can’t get on pitch.

Patrick: After watching the attitude of England tonight I can only assume that Gareth has dismantled any confidence gained from the Iran game, rather than using it to inspire. Sad.

  16. 'It didn't really happen for any England player'published at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There wasn't enough good individual performances from England tonight.

They also didn't have any composure on the ball. It looked like they had plans on the ball in the first five or 10 minutes, but they went away from that.

USA adjusted and credit to them for that, but realistically it wasn't good enough individually from England. You are standing there and asking "which of you had a good performance? Which one of you credited?". It didn't really happen for any of them.

  17. 'Great position in the group'published at 21:20 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    England

England captain Harry Kane speaking to ITV: "Wasn't the best performance for sure. Good spells with the ball, but we didn't quite have the final product. Clean sheet puts us in a great position in the group."

What was lacking? "Being clinical, complete contrast to Iran. We had two or three opportunities and didn't put it away. We were playing a tough team and we move on.

"They pressed well, they made it difficult. At times we dealt with it well, we respect them. A draw isn't bad for us. We look forward to the next one.

"We know we can play better than that, a draw in a World Cup isn't bad, no game is easy. After our first performance people think we'll landslide everything but it's not the case. We played a good side but it's not what we came here for."

Anon: Honestly English fans only have two tunes: “It’s coming home”’or “you’re getting sacked in the morning”. A little patience and faith please. It’s a tournament. There will be good days and bad days - even for the team that ultimately wins it.

Amit: I don't think the half time talk had any effect. England have been lethargic and poor tonight. We have a great squad and should have made quite a few changes at half time.

Jim: At least we didn't lose, but we deserved to. We have to beat Wales.

  19. 'Underwhelming'published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    FT: England 0-0 USA

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a really underwhelming performance.

They were underwhelming on the ball and didn't quite it right off the ball.

They stayed in the game and kept a clean sheet. That is the one positive.
